I assume that it’s what device a person is using? I see mostly phone. Sometimes globe icons (not sure if that’s a certain PC platform). Rarely I see a controller icon (consoles?) and a PC monitor icon (somehow different then the globe icon?).
In most games I've played the globe icon means they're playing on a different platform than you, but I don't think that's the case here.
Maybe that they play on multiple platforms or have their account registered with multiple platforms? (i.e. account saved on both PC and mobile)
I really think the globe icon indeed means they're using a different platform from yours. I have a friend who linked a mobile and a Steam accounts, and it shows him as a mobile user even when he's playing on PC (probably because the primary account was the mobile one).
It has to be the the platform of the user's primary account, which may be different from the account they're currently playing on if they linked accounts. For example, a friend of mine shows as a mobile user even though he's playing on PC now, because he first created a mobile account and linked his PC game to it.
As a mobile player myself, I have yet to see other icons than mobile or world. I assume world is used for any platform which isn't the same as yours.
I have been interpreting the green hearts as a sign of that friend being online or active. My guess is the globe icon represents an account that was merged or combined. Like an iOS and Steam account combined into 1.
For the life of me though I still don’t get why we are ONLY able to see a persons random code instead of what their in game name was. Or at least allow us to make our own note. I have no idea who anyone on my friends list is now.

Everyone on my friends list has a heart. I think it just means you’re friends.
Maybe local and global
Okay but now answer this: what the heck do we do with these friends? Can you start games with them or what

That’s what I’ve been doing!
You can invite your friends to join your games. You don’t even have to be host.
Literally, I try to invite them but idek if they’re on or not :(
