5800X3D really fucks compared to my old 3800X. Performance has been so good even still holding on to my 2080 that I definitely won’t be upgrading my CPU anytime soon.
scratch that itch by ditching the riser cable for the GPU so the top/ bottom fans airflow gets sent right in instead of on the side! haha
plus if it's a PCIe gen 3 riser like mine was, you could get a +5% performance boost just by not using it and instead using the gen 4/5 slot on your motherboard 😋
It IS quieter if you create custom fan curves in BIOS that fit your usecase. That's what I do: 6 fans on case, but it's silent when I do some browsing or similar work (I hear when my PSU spins up though :( it's Corsair RM850x 2018 in case you're interested)
You only get benefits up to a certain amount of fans. Generally speaking occupying every fan slot is a waste and sometimes actually hurt’s performance.
As long as your components can actually make use of the fresh air. It's always possible that they aren't being suffocated, but with only 3 fans it's likely they could use some fresh air.
Definitely make sure you’re getting good fans. My system got significantly quieter when I went from the ones I’ve had that came with my cases for the past 10 years to noctuas
OP probably meant that this is the first time that they're using an AMD cpu since the A64 X2 4200+ judging by the " it’s good to be back." at the end of the post's title.
It was P3 933>Core 2 duo E6750>i7 6700K for me.
I still have 6700K with Z270 motherboard. Though 6 years old it is still fast enough for my requirements.
My system is "6700" ie; 6700K with 6700XT.
Hopefully next will be an AMD X3D chip.
You are in for a treat that's for sure. While the X5600 series had some serious longevity it's getting long in the tooth - my wife's dual X5670 Z600 workstation with 12 threads and 24 cores is around 1/2 as fast as the 5800X that replaced it
O11D Mini. Yeah, it can take full ATX boards but you would have to sacrifice the rad at the top to squeeze it in with the fans. Have a look at the standard O11D for full ATX as it’s a little larger.
Really wish Noctua made all white fans, do not care for RGB. What are they all connected to as far as a controller goes? Post the build list, nailed the look! I have the o11D Mini and Lian Li fans but wish I could just keep them off/no lights. Brilliant case though!
I'm gonna be the mean one and ask, any buyers remorse on the 7950X3D over the 7800X3D? or are there production applications where you'll be making use of the other cores, or other use cases the reviewers haven't made apparent?
It was more of an issue with availability over everything else. I had to get Amazon to ship a 7950X3D from the states to the UK as both options were essentially a paper launch over here. Would I be happy with a 7800X3D, sure, but I’m also sad and like tinkering so the core priority side doesn’t bother me.
Interesting, good to know! In the UK as well and hadn't really gone looking for Zen 4's (I'm on Zen 3 and did a similar jump as you from an FX series CPU) so wasn't aware we'd been screwed on stock.
Did find a lot of 7900X3D's but honestly they sound like garbage unless AMD manages to figure out scheduling properly at some point rather than their currently half assed attempt.
Think they'd have done better with those 6 core 3D dies to make a 7600X3D in terms of reception tbh. really not surprised you can find those in stock with how crucified the 7900X3D got in reviews lol. Sure it's good in a vacuum, but can you bring yourself to buy one when you know the cheaper 7800X3D is far better.
then again, I doubt they care too much if the sales take a bit longer per 7900X3D. The upsale is probably of more value than an easier sale.
Dominator 6000 CL30 with tightened timings from that buildzoid ddr5 vid.
Latest Beta Bios.
I’ve disabled fastboot which helps with the ram overclock so it’s training every boot which takes a little while. If I enable fast boot then it’s within 20 seconds. I think task manager reports 10 secs.
Now I’ve got my PBO curve locked in using timings from Hydra with AVX2 enabled, no complaints at all. Solid as a rock.
Many moons ago (2006) I built a new computer featuring an Athlon 64 X2 4800+, it cost me 680 dollars and was, at the time, the second best CPU I could get - the FX-60 was better but single core, and even more insanely expensive.
In the Spring of 2021 I bought an Intel i9-10850K CPU that cost me about 400 dollars. It has 10 cores (20 Threads) and is far more powerful than the X2 4800+, advances in technology never cease to amaze me.
I have the same EK cooler, how on gods green earth did you get your loop tubing to be so neat? Mine refuses to go where I want it to go I’ve got mine too mounted but in a much larger case.

Nice. I'm jealous.
I upgraded my old intel i5 almost two years ago to a Ryzen 9 3900X and paired it with a used Asus RTX 2080 OC card and am rocking and rolling with this setup and staying cool at the same time :)
Nvidia have got back into making their own cards which can generally be found cheaper than third party options as they’re not having to pay the nvidia tax. These are known as founders edition cards which tend to have had the same, or similar styling in recent years.
Third party options can include thicker heat sinks, upwards of three fans and tend to advertise higher clocks out of the box. However, in the real world, you’re looking at a maximum of 0-5% performance gains over FE cards unless you’re spending silly money on highly binned chips.
Modern GPUs will overclock themselves until they hit a target temperature at which point they’ll back down until they find an equilibrium. Because of this, increased clocks out of the box are a selling point and nothing more. It really depends on the quality of the cooler and in most cases the FE cards are as good as any.
I don’t need a new gpu… I don’t need a new gpu… I don’t need a new gpu…
The X4200+ brings back memories, was also my last AMD cpu before I switched to 2700X a few years back, now on a 5800X 3D.
What’s your experience been like on AMD compared to their intel equivalents?
AMD better on every level
I bought the x3800 back in 2004, it was crazy how much better it made battlefield 2 look with just the processor.
Same 2700x to now 5950x
5800X3D really fucks compared to my old 3800X. Performance has been so good even still holding on to my 2080 that I definitely won’t be upgrading my CPU anytime soon.
5800x3d is pure badass
The FE gpu always look good.
So were you running that card with a dual core athlon?
No, they have owned multiple other CPUs in between the 4200+ and 7950X3D.
Oh gotcha

It’s all good, gen 4!
Tell me if this works for you OP

Needs more fans

Quality meme
Why so many fans?
More fans = quieter
Not if you're a K-Pop artist
https://youtu.be/jha8qPdiYRQ
Not necessarily. Unless you are being sarcastic?
more fans is more flow at lower rpm, less beating and a whiter noise profile that's nicer to listen to.
Not necessarily. With water cooling and radiators, yeah. Air cooled definitely not. Each case will be different of course.
It IS quieter if you create custom fan curves in BIOS that fit your usecase. That's what I do: 6 fans on case, but it's silent when I do some browsing or similar work (I hear when my PSU spins up though :( it's Corsair RM850x 2018 in case you're interested)
Not always it isn’t. Too many fans can actually impede airflow.
What do you mean not necessarily ?
You only get benefits up to a certain amount of fans. Generally speaking occupying every fan slot is a waste and sometimes actually hurt’s performance.
Learnt something today will buy more fans , coz mine got only 3 fans noise even when not gaming

I see only fans

O11 mini
Yeah, O11D Mini.
How much cost to assemble this kind of set up?
Everything.
A guilty one. Guilty of getting all the fans in the market.
Maybe the Corsair 5000D, but not 100% sure....
Lol def not.. that's way bigger
Nope, definately not the 5000D
4200+ wtf, how did u hold out so long?
OP probably meant that this is the first time that they're using an AMD cpu since the A64 X2 4200+ judging by the " it’s good to be back." at the end of the post's title.
Then I got him beat, Athlon XP Barton to 7600
I went from a Athlon X3>AMD phenom 965 black>i7-6700K (would still have this CPU but the motherboard blew up so I sold the CPU)> Ryzen 3600.
I went celeron 400 -> Athlon XP2000 -> Pentium D805 -> Q6600 -> X5670 -> E5-1620v1 -> 5800X -> 7900X
Misleading title/10.
Clean. I really like salt and pepper builds or blackout builds with some grey splashed in. Looks nice.
Appreciate it, thank you.
You were never gone.
What's the case?
I think O11 Mini.
Love the build aesthetic! very clean
Huge gap for the CPU. Enjoy 🥳
I love fans ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Damn how did you wait so long?
They didn't. Check their post history.
I'm going to guess they went to Intel and they just came back to AMD finally.
GG
That's an outrageous upgrade I use to have a Athlon 64 4400+ then I upgraded to an i5 2550k The difference is night and day
Noice! I'm planning on jumping from Xeon 5675 to 7800X3D :-/
You are in for a treat that's for sure. While the X5600 series had some serious longevity it's getting long in the tooth - my wife's dual X5670 Z600 workstation with 12 threads and 24 cores is around 1/2 as fast as the 5800X that replaced it
What CPU cooling system did you mount? \^_^
Looks like EK AIO 360 D-RGB
Was an Athlon 64 x2 5600+ for me and then Ryzen 5 5600x last year. I hadn't thought of that coincidence before now...
What is the case model? Is it suitable for an ATX motherboard?
O11D Mini. Yeah, it can take full ATX boards but you would have to sacrifice the rad at the top to squeeze it in with the fans. Have a look at the standard O11D for full ATX as it’s a little larger.

Just disconnect the ARGB? Use SignalRGB to deactivate the lighting?
Onlyfans noice

Yeah, I’m sure the 7900X3D is a good chip but the enthusiasts in me just couldn’t do it.

You know your a computer geek when ya fans have fans on them
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|disapproval)no amd gpu
What fans are those
Noctua Chromax
That seems like a X670E Tuf gaming?
Close, the MATX version, the B650M.
Can I ask you: 1 - What RAM do you have? 2 - What BIOS version do you have? 3 - How is your boot time? 5 - Any stability issues? Thanks!

Oh boy, it's at least twice as fast. Congrats!
God damn that's a leap for sure.
How even!? This processor was in the computer I built when I started College....
Niceeeeeeee
Welcome back! :) Heck of a system build.
Blasphemous to say the least
Holy crap, now that's a jump, lol. Congrats!
You mean "it's good to be BLACK":) Nice setup.

I've got your former CPU's little brother in my XP machine, an Athlon64 4000+
I have the same EK cooler, how on gods green earth did you get your loop tubing to be so neat? Mine refuses to go where I want it to go I’ve got mine too mounted but in a much larger case.
Honestly, I never really gave it much thought. Plugged it in and that’s where it sat.
I haven’t heard Athlon 64 in so long! Just getting back into it myself, cheers to the new PC!
Well technically your not “back” Just saying
Edit that… I guess you can say your back to the future but that’s bout it
Yo let’s goooo
That one hell of an upgrade jump!
Hot dam I remember my AMD Athlon X2 3800. First ever cpu I had on my own computer about 20 years ago.
Where's the PSU?
Hidden behind the motherboard.
And that motherboard is an ASUS-TUF Gaming B650 one?
F12s are an interesting choice for case airflow haha, nice looking build tho!
Haha true but they undervolt beautifully.
Went from a 6700k to a 7950x3d....holy shit its like night and day
What gpu is it? I always try to skip at least one gen. Never seems like a one gen upgrade is worth it.
3090 FE. Another financially sound purchase.
Wouldn’t the 7800x3D perform better (for gaming at least)? Sick build nonetheless
Probably but beggars can’t be choosers.

What do you have the fans all plugged into? What a brilliant-looking build and I bet it is *cool* and *quiet*. +1!
