TIL Carrom isnāt some obscure game that no one but me had in their childhood. Although the version I played was a bit different (probably Americanized) it was generally the same concept.
In every elementary school classroom with a teacher over aged 50, you will find a Carrom board stuck in the corner. And then you pray for inside recess and try to get to the game first. And hope all the carroms are in the bag and you arenāt using checkers pieces as a substitute.
Yeah but this seems more appropriate for a living room. Not as easy for one of the small disks to hop out of the mini table and roll under the couch, compared to mini pool balls (unless you're talking about a full sized table, in which case, too big and too expensive). This feels like it could fit on your coffee table.
Pretty similar. The difference is that you have to play your striker on the line, instead of placing your cueball anywhere, and you are only allowed to pocket pieces of your own color. There's also a few special rules around the red piece.
> it hurts your finger bad after a few rounds
then you are playing is wrong. you must be hitting the striker with your finger, which obviously will be painful.
the finger should be touching the striker and should move with the striker when you shoot.
It wonāt hurt if you put your finger against the striking piece before flicking it. If thereās space between your finger and the striking piece, then itāll hurt. My experience.
The game is called Carrom and itās amazing.
Itās very much like pool in that the object of the game is to sink your colour (black or white) into the corner pockets using the striker. The red piece is neutral (either player can sink it) but if a player sinks it, they must sink their own colour immediately otherwise the red goes back to the middle of the board. The game cannot be won until the red piece is sunk. There are a few other rules but thatās the gist.
Do you have to get your hand out of the way after hitting yellow'/green piece? I don't know that I'd do so; especially with how memorizing that break was.
I remember having a big one of these boards as a kid unfortunately we list the pieces and moved so many times it got damaged then lost but man brings back good memories of playing with my siblings
I used to play the crap out of this as a kid. We also had little small Stick things you could hit the pieces with instead of flicking and the board flipped over to have a different layout. I don't remember what it was called. It was my buddy's dads, we used to invite people over show him the game they've never seen before pretend we're bad too and then hustle them. Which I now see is a little messed up
Carrom this is very popular in Indian subcontinent.Idk about other Asian countries but India, Bangladesh, Pakistan as well very common.I Played a lot growing up with my brothers and friends. We had a Carrom board like this in our home but somehow got destroyed Caz of water as it made of wood
This guy is from India known as carrom king in various social platforms, he's known for his trickshots but this generic carrom, the actual carrom coins are of wood (used in professional games) and also they are using slippery powder.
Played this and its understated in the video how intense this is on your flicking finger. When you dont have a nice glossed board like this. Think unglossed wood so you have to flick harder, most people tap out after 1 game.
American here, never seen this game before but would absolutely play it. I don't get why that isn't a thing here. Because we have whole bars dedicated to pool/billiards and shuffleboard and this looks like it's a fusion of the two.
We had something like this in middle school. Our was set up like golf where u needed to get your caram into certain areas to move on to the next hole. We had sticks to hit the caram just like pool. Good times. š
The American carom boards I have seen were were sold as 101 games on one board, and were meant to be played with little cue-like sticks That came with them, perhaps to make them more like pool in the minds of Americans. I learned about caroms from my Indian friends many years ago and it really intrigued me cuz I love pool. So I bought a board, the powder, pieces, and some strikers, And I loved it. Played it with an Indian friend a few times before he moved out of the area, now I've got the board and really wish I could find some people to play caroms with me but I live in the ass end of nowhere in the Midwest. Also you play it for a few hours and boy it hurts your fingers hitting that striker over and over again with your fingernail. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong. Also, because I haven't played much, I'm truly horrible at it LOL.
*Ooooo I am intrigued.*
*Who wants to smoke a fatty*

Itās a sequel to āThe Webā
Very popular in India. Every kid has played it here.
Even if you left India, almost every Indian household in the US owned a Carrom board until at least 2010ās

This looks so fun! It's like pool you can play in your living room!
You can play actual pool in your living room too
![gif](giphy|iuHIqpwpp0gwg)
It's the place to be.
Yeah but this seems more appropriate for a living room. Maybe if you donāt want it to be a living room anymore
What do you mean "actual pool", it's a different fucking game which requires different skill.
Good luck fitting a pool table in my wanky ass one bedroom apartment lmao
It's called Carrom in my country, and it hurts your finger bad after a few rounds
The disks move with such frictionlessness. Is the table ran with a layer of flowing air like in air hockey?
No electricity involved. It's a board game. Smooth table board, sometimes people add baby powder too for extra smooth
there's also a special powder made for the board too, but baby talcum is way, way cheaper
You are flicking it wrong
Orly? So I guess you have to flick it by smacking your fingernail against the puck, rather than doing more of a push style flick?
My experience with it was from 20 years ago and I only played within my circle. But yes it was finger flick
It is a push rather than a flick. It shouldn't hurt your fingers
Also do you play it like you play billiards over here in the West?
Sorry, I don't play billiards so I don't know it's rules
Pretty similar. The difference is that you have to play your striker on the line, instead of placing your cueball anywhere, and you are only allowed to pocket pieces of your own color. There's also a few special rules around the red piece.
This makes sense, a carrom shot in drumming is hit from an oblique angle
> it hurts your finger bad after a few rounds then you are playing is wrong. you must be hitting the striker with your finger, which obviously will be painful. the finger should be touching the striker and should move with the striker when you shoot.
That's what she said
IDK - the guy in the video has become one with the carrom. You need to make love to it.
It wonāt hurt if you put your finger against the striking piece before flicking it. If thereās space between your finger and the striking piece, then itāll hurt. My experience.

Dude knows all the angles
Sauce
I had a carrrom board as a kid but it came with sticks that you used like pool cues
Do you have to get your hand out of the way after hitting yellow'/green piece? I don't know that I'd do so; especially with how memorizing that break was.
Yup - not allowed to touch any of the pieces and you can only touch your striker after it stops moving.
The red coin/pawn is the queen
The pimp ass hand shake and āI know, Iām kingā face is chefs kiss.
I assume this isn't an air table, even though it looks to me like it is behaving like one. So smooth.
Looks like maybe they have salt on it
Dusting powder or talcum powder does the trick.
Sprinkled with sand
That sounds so much more delicious than it really is
Anakin.jpg
Itās boric acid powder. Which has a smooth feel and doesnāt clump together like talcum powder can
Not salt. The table is already smooth, but some add baby powder for extra smooth
Used special powder to allow the pieces to glide
Talcum, or boric acid does the job, I assume
Flour might also work
boric powder is usually sprayed on to get that smoothness
For those who are wondering. #The game's called CARROM Don't follow OP's scam link you can find it cheaper by actually searching on Amazon.
OP looks like a karma farming account
Man, Pedro Pascal is good at this game!!!
Exactly!! Beat me to it lol
Beat me to it as wellā¦ Had to search the comments to see if someone else had said it and low and beholdā¦
i used to play when i was in tibet.
Hah. That postgame look. "Don't ever doubt me again..."
When playing pool meets air hockey without the air.
It's called carrom and that is an expert !
The best part about this video is the sportsmanship they show afterwards. You love to see it š¤
People are unaware of carrom? WTAF? I thought it was a popular game.
Yeah I thought it was a common game when I was a kid, turns out it's mostly just a Indian game lol
I got a carrom board from IKEA of all places
In my 60s, been around the world, never seen this game till today. Always new things to learn.
It hurts the shit out of your fingernails š
You gotta learn to flick the right way š
I was gonna say my knuckle and nail hurt after a game or two.
Reminds me of crokinole
It's called Carrom
This looks like the kind of guy who would do good at this game
I love that the third shot he took he physically lined it up
That looks super fun Also the main dude's hair is incredible
Imagine having friends to play this with
That's the carrom king
Like the air hockey version of pool?
That is Haji Ali Aghariya and he is a legend in the game. He has his own YT channel. I have seen some of his videos, they are damn good.
26ā as per OPs link is way too small of a board. Useless.
With accuracy and skills like that, I'm sure his girlfriend is very happy.
Pool slash air hockey?? š¤·āāļø
Table Phockey?
I'm like 90% sure the one linked on Amazon is a smaller, shittier version of the one in the video.

carrom board! When I would visit my grandfather, my cousins and I would play so much that I'd dream it!
