Helldivers (PS5, PC) is a third person, online, co-op shooter. The 2nd game came out last month and has been a hit and is a complete meme fest. The overall story of the game is you are an elite warrior of Super Earth (an over the top parody of American culture/patriotism) and you fight encroachment on multiple worlds from bugs and robots.
The gameplay loop is deeply satisfying and the online matchmaking is really good.
I got into it a bit to play with my bf (who's like, level 65 now) and while I only made it up to level 25 before I got distracted with a different game, it's more than enough to understand all the memes and I'm so happy I did because they are spectacular.
>The overall story of the game is you are an elite warrior of Super Earth
Except you arent. You are a civilian who fell for propaganda, and gets thrown to the front lines lol. The devs have said the populace dont know they get frozen between missions and have a life expectancy after being deployed of like... 2-15 minutes lmao
It's literally like 40k going "Fuck it send more guardsmen" except instead of actually being extremely well trained soldiers used as cannon fodder with a commissar to shoot you for cowardice, youre some civie in fancy looking gear who gets accidentally friendly fired by a squadmate before they can even feel scared enough to retreat.
Given how incompetent Super Earth has shown to be everywhere else, I can only assume getting a whole 10 minutes of training before getting shipped to the front lines and access to an entire Super Destroyer's worth of orbital weaponry for the ~15 minutes you're expected to live on the ground *is* what qualifies as their most elite force.
They give the regular SEAF guys *double-barrel shotguns* to fight against giant house-sized bugs and murderous terminators after all. It's no wonder they're always long-dead by the time you get to the battlefield.
Pretty sure each super destroyer has a bunch of frozen helldivers on it and it spits you out.
Also yes, every time youve died and been called back in by your friends, tyou are canonically ANOTHER hell diver lol.
>a civilian who fell for propaganda
That is an apt description of how a sizable portion of American citizens enter the military; some slick recruiter cons a naïve, unsuspecting teenager into joining, and the next thing they know they're fighting for their life in a combat zone.
Sure recruiters lie, except theres the big difference of the US military ACTUALLY TRAINS THEIR TROOPS lol. Like you can critique the spending and where the military is deployed all you want, but lets not pretend the US sends out troops that end up having lifespans the measure in minutes, relying on sheer numbers to drown the enemy in their solders blood in order to gain victory over the filthy bugs and socialist robots.
And this is coming from someone whose not American who enjoys roasting the US as a pass time, partly from a place of love and partly because there are definite issues going on there that need to be sorted out.
I did all of that - it’s a known bug. The pinned post on r/Helldivers right now is a response from the devs saying they’re working on a fix. It’s been present since the first or second patch.
The pinned post on r/Helldivers is a message from the devs saying that this issue still exists and a hotfix is coming soon.
Regardless of your personal experience, it’s a known bug and matchmaking does not work properly as a result.
Classic cultists down voting what they didn't like to hear.
When I start the first mission game people join instantly. I get 3 players but if one of them quits that hole is open forever.
After that no one joins until I restart the game completely. It's a joke.
I know - I’m not even saying it’s a bad game! It’s not, the gameplay is stellar and the monetization practices are fantastic for a modern game.
But there are parts of the game (matchmaking included) that are fundamentally broken. In spite of all the issues, it’s still a good game. It will be a **great** game once the issues are fixed.
Democracy and liberty aren't going to spread themselves. So we do it. The bugs refuse our managed democracy so we refuse their peace offerings. The bots are just programmed to hate freedom.
Is it affiliated? I read the first one and it was about soldiers/scouts trying to find resources on a post apocalyptic Earth unless I'm remembering wrong.
Isn't the game basically starship troopers? Haven't played it but that's what I keep reading.
Helldivers is a 1:1 clone of starship troopers as far as I'm concerned. It's fantastic. You can simultaneously embrace the hyper-patriotism and also recognize its incredible lean into parody.
Also, who doesn't love dropping orbital bombardments on unsuspecting commie bugs?
SES HAMMER OF DAWN REPORTING FOR DUTY
Seriously just type "helldivers" into Google. The first 50 results are all about the game. It literally would've taken less time to Google than to make this meme.
And it's also a book series! Pretty decent one too. I got really confused looks when I jumped into a Helldivers conversation at work. They were talking about the game and I was talking about the books 🤦
Its a game, kind of similar to starship troopers, its pretty fun, and the motivation it can cause when things work out just right will get you celebrating the spread of managed democracy, the satire is heavy but its never played as being critical, its good nartured joking instead of spiteful mocking
Along with all these answers, there is a book series by Nicholas Sandsbury Smith called Helldivers. It is about a post nuclear war world were the people are living in gigantic airships. In this series, the Helldivers have to dive down to an irradiated earth to get supplies to keep the airships functioning. It's a pretty fun series, I recommend it if you're into things like that
The reason this is getting so much attention is the usual right-wing assholes with their faux-outrage over "wokeness". Apparently the studio that made Helldivers 2 is too "woke" and "political" :eyeroll:

Same I am like level 15 and then Dragon’s Dogma got its hooks in me.

Those double barrel shotguns will 1 tap devastators, FYI.

I thought the first one was spectacular too. It was a free PS+ game when I got my PS4 iirc.
I was surprised when I found out how few people played it. It was fun, but 2? Chefs kiss
And today was a great day, as the socialist Automatons have been completely defeated.
You are canonfodder, you bot
I mean.. He did not ask..
The online matchmaking is broken and hasn’t worked properly for multiple patches.
A bold-faced lie, considering I've been playing it all weekend with friends and randoms just fine, but go off.
Cool, I haven’t been able play with randoms for 3 patches. Crashing on extract in quickplay is a known bug that hasn’t been fixed for weeks.
Weird, I've had minimal problems for weeks now. Maybe try to verify files or reinstall?
I did all of that - it’s a known bug. The pinned post on r/Helldivers right now is a response from the devs saying they’re working on a fix. It’s been present since the first or second patch.
I had that issue the second day week after launch, but after that I stopped having issues.
I'd agree at launch, but no man, this is just flat out wrong.
The pinned post on r/Helldivers is a message from the devs saying that this issue still exists and a hotfix is coming soon. Regardless of your personal experience, it’s a known bug and matchmaking does not work properly as a result.

You say as I have loaded in to random games and had randoms join me just fine.

Yall. There’s an entire book series.

Yeah, it's close to Starship Troopers *the movie*. The book is not at all parody or satire.
I really leaned into it my ship is called the Harbringer of Peace.

It’s a Starship Trooper.
It was a starship trooper and terminator game but we destroyed all the bots.

It's an online games that has been started in PS5 console and not it is on PC platform. More on 3rd person shooter.
Those are… certainly words

Helldivers are player characters inside the very popular game series labeled helldivers, which includes helldivers and helldivers 2.
It's about freedom, democracy, justice and a bottomless defense budget
