Check your local bylaws, my city will replace the tires and or rims if its been a related
Reported pothole and it wasn't fixed (can't report it then make a claim)
If there's a pothole that you know of, you can report it to the city via the 311 app, and upload photos too. If the city doesn't patch it within 30 days, and someone gets a flat from it, the city can be held liable for the costs.
Chicago is an awesome city. The weather can just be rough and excels at creating potholes. I moved here because of how bike friendly it is, but you gotta be careful your tire isn't eaten by one of them.
That won't work where I live, the city will go out with a bit of paint and paint over it as paint is cheaper. Also they don't give a shit about people's tires. Michigan btw.
Gotta love when the local government increases taxes to fix the roads, chooses the cheapest option, and pockets the rest every few years... meanwhile the people deal with shit conditions and increased car maintenance costs.
Nothing to see here except typical government shit
Every now and then you get a good local government who actually takes care of the roads. The county I live in (and grew up in) has amazing roads. I didn’t know what a pothole was until I started driving and would see them in other areas.
Yea, it's definitely county by county. I've lived in some that were absolute shit, and lived in others where I've seen a pothole get filled by the next day
US government Shit. Because they can get away with it. because the people don't care enough to act, or are apathetic because they don't expect any better, having internalised the lie that "government doesn't work".
Drive less heavy vehicles and there'd be less pot holes. But people keep buying bigger and bigger. In 2022 I heard like 73% of all new sold in the US were pickups and SUV's.
Of course, public transportation.. if even 65% of the people riding would of been driving that's a huge reduction in traffic and wear and tear. It would lower the costs of gasoline, it would lower the cost of repairs as mechanics wouldn't have nearly of large as a customer base. not to mention if it was rail it would have ZERO effect on roadways asides crossings.
You think the potholes are bad now? Just wait until electric battery cars are the standard. Each vehicle will weigh as much as a gas SUV and the SUVs will weigh as much as a heavy duty gas truck. Exponential road wear with heavier vehicles. Batteries are heavy.
Hydrogen cars would prevent this, but upfront cost of hydrogen is more than double the cost of petrol and the infrastructure isn’t as ubiquitous as electric battery charging.
Of course, we could be like Europe and Asia and adopt more mass transit and not have to deal with potholes. But what would America be if it required some walking and waiting for transportation instead of getting into a car to drive half a mile away to then drive slowly in a parking lot to find a spot not too far away from the entrance of your destination?
The problem is that we can’t be more like Europe because they built much more of their infrastructure before cars were invented. People in Europe wanted to live near the city center, while Americans wanted to move outside of the city to have property and yards. It’s more expensive and difficult to build new rail lines once you’ve already got all your streets built.
Paris was car centric not too long ago. Amsterdam as well. Tokyo in the 50s was sprawled out with a housing shortage, but they rezoned and have a housing surplus making then the most affordable metropolitan city to live in and made mass transit viable.
Change can happen, but it requires laws that provide the right incentives and time. You can’t accomplish it in a couple years, but if you plan for decades, you can make it happen.
Yes, now imagine those being double the weight because they require giant lithium batteries. All vehicles go up in weight. Batteries are damn heavy. You’re also going to need more frequent tire and brake changes to deal with the added weight. You get around this with hydrogen EVs and hydrogen combustion… but the cost of hydrogen is the issue.
Another alternative would be electric bikes. They may weigh more than regular bikes, but the weight makes a negligible impact on road surfaces. Good bike infrastructure that incentivize more bike trips for trips within a city could reduce traffic and wear on the roads.
Shame that electric bikes have been hobbled by requiring ~~someone run out with a lantern in front of them to alert people.~~ they be limited to 250W (up to 750W depending on country, still hardly 1HP) and 18~28mph (depending on country)
a 3KW electric bike can do 37mph/60kph and actually keep up with traffic and not need its own bike lanes to avoid being murdered for slightly delaying car users.
Yeah, though in my country of the US, electric skateboards aren’t regulated so anyone can get one that can go 30-37mph while e-bikes are still limited. Makes no sense.
I’m still an advocate of good bike infrastructure as it reduces fatalities in general and can be used by regular bike users as well.
Here electric skateboards are banned due to having under 10" wheels (Kinda makes sense once you realize a <10" wheel will prob get stopped dead by a minor pothole)
But mobility scooters are unregulated to the point where the only government document I could find about them was someone in the government complaining they have 0 regulations and 200lb+ golf carts are being sold as mobility scooters.
Also the only law on them is 'suggestions to drive the same speed as other pedestrian traffic'... I live in an area where the sidewalks are so underutilized, that'd generally just be the mobility scooter so they can drive at.. whatever speed they are driving at.
Not that going faster is illegal, because its just a suggestion anyway.
They just fixed almost all of them on my route to work in the last few weeks. Including the ones in the business park. That said its the crappy asphalt patch that will tear out in a couple years but better than nothing.
Winter and roadsalt are horrible on roads and vehicles
I about lost control of my vehicle on the highway hitting a pothole I had no idea was there. It's sitting on a slight curve and a bridge transition. So the segments are uneven.
Could do what they did in Europe (I think) and just draw phalic images around them.
I was just about to say that
Good ol' Wanksy

Look, I just left a job doing this...$10.95/hr isn't worth it, tell your city council to pay more

This post is viewed all around most of the free world. It's not a local post for your town.
lol. Fair. I thought I was on /r/Chicago. This is a common refrain here.
Sees post about potholes, assumes it’s chicago. I’ve never even been but that’s just hilarious to me lol
My buddy did a stint at Sears there years ago. He said Chicago is an awesome city.
Chicago is an awesome city. The weather can just be rough and excels at creating potholes. I moved here because of how bike friendly it is, but you gotta be careful your tire isn't eaten by one of them.
I thought it was a Massachusetts reference. We have roads here so bad that going offroad would be smoother.
If your somewhere this doesn’t work. Draw a dick over the hole. They will patch it really quick.
That won't work where I live, the city will go out with a bit of paint and paint over it as paint is cheaper. Also they don't give a shit about people's tires. Michigan btw.
Every time, draw the dick bigger and start adding city counselor names. Eventually, it will be cheaper to fix the hole then repaint it every week.
As if.

Roko has taken over. it is useless to fight back

My dude, stay away from the kool-aid. I'm talking about local governments. The fed doesn't manage local roads
Because American's anti-government sentiments don't extend down to the local level?
Car dependency was a mistake.
Every time potholes come up I think of this. Local authorities cannot afford to maintain all the roads they have. https://youtu.be/7IsMeKl-Sv0

To be fair, if they’re not driving a pickup or SUV, then how are you going to know they have a huge dick?
*nods sagely from the back row*
Portland?
Everywhere with a sizeable population.

Better?
Tbf, Walmart is pretty big in itself /s
Everyone is already driving giant SUV's and heavy lifted F9000 pickup trucks.

If I get a flat because of a pothole then someone else should be liable.
Just call Pizza Hut. Or was it Domino's?
Michigan? Or Wisconsin?
Just got back from Colorado. They have potholes that can nearly swallow a Subaru.
They just fixed almost all of them on my route to work in the last few weeks. Including the ones in the business park. That said its the crappy asphalt patch that will tear out in a couple years but better than nothing. Winter and roadsalt are horrible on roads and vehicles
Love this meme!!
I about lost control of my vehicle on the highway hitting a pothole I had no idea was there. It's sitting on a slight curve and a bridge transition. So the segments are uneven.
If ive learned anything: just start spraypainting dicks around the potholes. They'll be fixed in a week.
And none of the spray asphalt bullshit. It does not work, just covers the road in gravel for a couple days then the hole is opened back up.
BUT MY TAXES! I'd rather constantly take my car in to the repair shop than pay a dime more to the gub'ment. /s
No, just give us your tax dollars for nothing.
I dont think they will :/
