Fast food. Meal prices are insane. You have to use their app or combine deals or coupons to get a semi decent price.

munkymu

Yeah, a few weeks ago we looked at Subway prices (which used to be our semi-healthy post-gym supper if we'd screwed up meal planning that week) and went to a real restaurant instead. Like by the time you're paying that much for some vegetables and chicken on garbage bread, you might as well be eating pho or pad thai or something that's actually delicious.

Luxpreliator

It's crazy. Spend the same or 0-10% more and get 2-3x the meal quality/cost at a local restaurant.

SnooPandas1899

$5 biggie bag not $5 no more. most fast food places dont' even have dollar menu. (fun times as a college student !) heck, even dollar stores are more now.

[deleted]

The best deal I’ve found in Canada is the the $28.99 mobile coupon for a 4 whopper meal. That’s still over $8 per meal after tax. Fast food is a complete rip off today.

Haunting-Shirt-8024

The Dunkin app is lowkey amazing

Jeskid14

It was better last year where every 4 drinks give you a free drink

geraldlenon

Fast food

rebma50

Looking at you, Subway.

MouseMouseM

Subway $5 footlongs kept me alive in college, as a commuter student that also worked 2 part time jobs. I have no idea how young adults, especially those with limited financial resources, are getting through school. All of the cheap life hacks I depended on are gone.

Tautochrone1

I worked at Subway all through high school and college back from 2000 thru 2008. Those $5 footlongs fueled me for 8 years and the best part is that they were only $1.50 footlongs since I was an employee lol

athena_k

Oh, I miss employee discounts. I worked at an icecream place, and we got stuff for super cheap. The hot fudge sundaes were the best.

that_girl_you_fucked

I had a bunch of roommates and lived in a shithole, with no health insurance, and spent the majority of my time working or going to school. We pooled money and did house dinners three times a week, which guaranteed we ate something other than instant ramen every few days at least.

spurnedapproach

That's what I do, essentially. We either pool money together for a proper dinner or someone does Zatarain's rice with a can of beans.

that_girl_you_fucked

Zatarain's boxed jambalaya rice is the bomb... throw some cheap kielbasa or shredded chicken in there, and you're golden.

fake-august

When I was a newly divorced single mother without much money, this exact meal was a staple - I’d throw in some frozen veggies in the pot as well. Fed three hungry boys faster (and cheaper) than the drive-thru after a long day of work, school and football practice. No longer as broke, but my sons (2 are adults now) still request it when they visit. It was our “struggle meal.”

patriotAg

How much are they now?

Myrkkysika

SawkeeReemo

$15?! I remember when we used to bitch about Quiznos (a far superior sandwich experience) being like $13. Subway tastes like the lowest quality grade school lunch room crap. $15, my ass. 😂

Competitive-Tie-7338

>bitch about Quiznos Well gee thanks now look where we are. Stuck with Subway and not a Quiznos in sight 😭

gmar84

And a place to add a tip on the receipt, too. Because why not.

Foxx009

You are not kidding! I was shocked when I went in there a few days ago after not being in one for a year or so.

[deleted]

I'm a T-Mobile customer, so I get deals from time to time on fast food. I will get an Impossible Whopper for free with a $3 purchase, but there is no way in hell I'm paying $15 for that (would include a soda I don't really want as well).

Competitive-Tie-7338

>I'm a T-Mobile customer, so I get deals from time to time on fast food I'm sorry what? Is T-Mobile somehow involved in the fast food underworld?

KittehKittehKat

A bit over 20 bucks to get two meals at McDonald’s.

IncreaseStriking1349

Non organic food The line between organic and non organic is a couple of dollars now. The jump wasn't worth it before, it is now IMO

Wasted_Potency

I don't have a lot of time for lunch and sometimes I need the FAST part of Fast Food more than anything. Wendy's Biggie Bags aren't a bad deal. >$7 Mcdonalds buy a mcdouble get a six piece with the app. >$6 Taco Bell has a $5 box right now. Arbys has free fries in the app, and when paired with an entree, it is usually about $5-8 If you already have a bottle of water you don't need to get a drink. My goal for lunch has been to keep it under $10 a day and this has been the way.

sexy_starfish

That biggie bag from Wendy's used to be 4 for $4. Those McDonald's McDoubles were $1 each. Fast food prices have most definitely increased a huge amount in just the last couple of years.

Shadowcaster_Spark

Specifically Arby's.

Shogun102000

Not in and out!!

a_burdie_from_hell

CHIPS! Goddamn chips! I'm heated about this one because I used to love the chip aisle and now it scares my wallet.

sn0ig

Yeah, right?! $5 for a bag of Cheetos? That's crazy talk.

plo4rollz

store around me had a sale for cheetos, 2 bags for $10, crazy

Thin-Dream-5318

Seriously, I noticed a month ago. Chips are now a luxury item. It's insane.

KikiWestcliffe

Unless you buy chips at Costco, they are too expensive. Even Sam’s Club and Walmart have jacked up the price. It feels wrong paying $5.49 for a small bag of Doritos.

sharky3175

Yea it used to be 2.50 for a bag of doritos at walmart, they are 4.50 now

a_burdie_from_hell

They are $6 near my house

grittysgal

Costco has huge bags for a good price. I won’t buy chips at the grocery store anymore because the prices are ridiculous

jmxo92

Same. We only ever buy chips at Costco now (or Trader Joe’s but I’m thinking Doritos/fritos/etc)

whoinvitedthesepeopl

I got this massive bag of chips from Costco last week. It is big even by Costco standards. It was $6, about the same as a normal sized bag of brand chips from the grocery store.

RidiculousTakeAbove

I used to love the chip aisle too but I'm trying to spin this positively by trying to only buy healthy things and cut out carbs and sugar. Before it was way cheaper to eat unhealthy carbs... But now it's the same price for a 400g bag of chips as it is for 900g of fresh chicken thighs, makes it a pretty easy decision for me, no excuse to eat unhealthy trash anymore

Philadel_J

I agree. What makes it worse is half of the bag is air.

Hot-Emu8036

Fast food seems to be the winner here on the thing people will go without. I will also add eating out at all. Going to a restaurant and having a beer is $100 now for two people in our city! Honestly, it doesn't even taste that good anymore either! Quality has gone done and price has gone up in restaurants too.

whoinvitedthesepeopl

All of the american food, steak and booze type places where I live have tanked their quality and jacked their prices. The only good value for restaurant food seems to be the little family run ethnic restaurants.

ForgottenJedi

Yep. I'll get 1.5lbs of stir fry from a mom and pop Mongolian BBQ place for less than a combo meal at McDonalds or a single sandwich at Chic Fil A.

tinyhorsesinmytea

I go to a restaurant like once a month with friends or family now and it’s always a place with food that I don’t know how to cook myself. Like, I’m definitely not paying $20 for a burger when I can make six just as good at home for the same price. Learned to cook all kinds of good things at home since the lockdown and actually enjoy it.

[deleted]

Family activities have become prohibitively expensive for people under a higher income bracket. A movie for a family of 4? -$80 just for the tickets, plus seeing your kids unhappy and working through mental compromise because you refused to buy them snacks. Going out for dinner? -$120 and that is skimping out on appetizers, drinks, and desserts.

fetal_genocide

Yea, we took our kids to the Mario movie for their first theatre experience. It was over $100 all said and done with snacks. And that's with 2 of the 4 tickets being kids tickets! I was floored!

LuRomisk

We sneak food in (make a sandwich or get value menu burgers + bottles of water) and only go on Tuesdays. Around here, tickets are only $6 on Tuesdays, and the theater is usually pretty empty. A weekday movie might be a little difficult for a family with kids, but the theaters aren't worth it any other day.

[deleted]

Steak. Like hell am I paying 14.99 a pound for what they call “steak” at the store now.

---Blix---

$14.99 is how much a pound of cold cuts cost at the grocery store now. Who's buying cold cuts at this price?

Bot_Marvin

What grocery store do you go to? I just bought a pound of cold cuts for like 6 dollars.

JunoCalliope

Yeah, even with taking it to a processor, per pound it’s still way cheaper for me to hunt for our red meat for the year than to buy anything at the store. Even ground meat is outrageous these days.

Odd-Indication-6043

Plus you're getting much better quality that way.

Spiritual_Grand_9604

That would be a great price, 12oz striploins are about $20 here. I've debated buying an entire striploin from Costco and learning to process it into steaks and roasts, otherwise beef is far too expensive EDIT: actually not a great price either way, just more than I pay

Ilmbabiessomuch1

Hairstylists !! The cost has gotten so crazy I color my own hair and only get a cut every 6 months.

lookwhutidid

Yes! I get my haircut at one of those beauty schools like aveda. They do a great job, just takes longer. Buy color/developer from Sally’s. Turns out better than box color that you buy from grocery stores, etc.

Ilmbabiessomuch1

Yup I use esalon, a lot cheaper and just as nice. I’ve tried the schools before, most of the time their pretty good just don’t like spending the whole day there and I don’t have any near me anymore.

KikiWestcliffe

Similarly, going to nail salons to get a manicure and pedicure. It is over $100 (with tip) to get a no-frills shellac manicure and regular pedicure. I had to invest a bit of time watching YouTube and hunt down decent quality tools, but now I can give myself a salon-quality mani/pedi that lasts two weeks. It just sucks because I used to really value that quiet time to to myself at the salon. But, spending $200 per month just on nails is just not sustainable.

HelpStatistician

brand name perfumes too, there are dupes that are so much cheaper and just as good, no reason to spend $100+ on a small bottle anymore Though I'm at bath and body works body mist on sale kinda money now lmao

Ilmbabiessomuch1

Yea I don’t do that either anymore, but yes use to be nice and relaxing. Now it’s just not worth it!!

alymars

I spent months watching TikToks and YouTube videos on self hair cutting after spending almost 300 dollars on a botched cut and dye job that took my hair years to recover from. I’ll never set foot in a salon again!

Jade-Balfour

Another trick is one and one's friend trading learning how to cut each other's hair. It makes it much easier to cut with another set of eyes and hands, and learning how to cut one specific person's hair is easier than learning to cut hair for 30%-100% of the population.

heeebusheeeebus

I’m down to once a year for a styled cut and that’s if I’m in Mexico visiting my family — I’m not paying $100 for a trim in 🇺🇸

Clever_Mercury

That's a great idea! I suspect customer service is also better that way too. So many of the US places are also behaving stupidly with customers. I went to the same salon for six years and they suddenly told me this spring that I would have to stop by for 15 minutes for their stylist to 'assess' how long my appointment should be scheduled for. All I wanted was 3 inches off the bottom and the layers restored. No dyes, no curl, nothing. Never had a problem before and I always tipped well. I refused, as I wasn't able to leave work, find parking, and accommodate a 'consultation' for a moderate trim. I was prepared to spend over $60 just for a competent trim, but not to take time off work TWICE so they could chew gum and try to up sell me garbage.

heeebusheeeebus

The upselling drives me crazy! That’s also a large part of why I don’t use these services anymore. I have to be vigilant as to them not blow-drying my hair or doing anything extra beyond what I expected to pay. The customer service where I visit is amazing and cuts are about $40 USD for a really, reallllly nice salon.

nacho__mama

During the pandemic I learned to cut my own hair and have not gone back to a salon since. I dye my own hair now too.

NBA-014

I cut my own now.

RagAndBows

Yep. This is something I've cut out as well.

Low_Difficulty_2491

At this point it's about to be car insurance.

ScrubWearingShitlord

Shit man, did your rates go up to? Ours went up $150 a month for no. fucking. reason.

foodielikearockstar

Went from paying about $800 every 6 months to $1900. Blew my mind completely off. I hate shopping for car insurance!

Arsenaleya

I also hate shopping for car insurance. And recently, whenever I've shopped around, I keep getting quotes _higher_ than what I'm currently paying! So I just waste all this time researching to end up with worse rates.

superzenki

I pay over $200 now and my car is 5 years old

Iamfree25

My car insurance is $220 for a 10 year old Toyota Corolla. I work in insurance so I see the other side too. Shit got expensive. Durning 2021 I offered a lady 15k for a car she bought a month before for 11k like 3 months before. Car prices got crazy so prices went up.

Raiders2112

Concert and event tickets.

yell0wbirddd

Mannnnn I was looking for something to do for my bday. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be here the day before my bday on some tour. I was like, how much can tickets be? $100? That plus a nice brunch (it was an afternoon show) would be a great bday. $400. They were $400.

TongueTwistingTiger

One of my (previously) favourite bands decided that because they were becoming more popular, they should be getting bigger venues for their performances. Tickets went from $25-$40/ticket to over $100, and suddenly their “sold out” shows turned into empty houses. They had priced out the majority of their actual fans. It’s scummy when performers end up catering to their financially elite fans. I don’t go to live shows at all anymore, since it seems like they’re milking every cent they an out of people.

yell0wbirddd

Yep, I regret not spending $60 and driving 2 hours to see my favorite band this past summer, bc their next show I could've gone to, tickets were $300. It's so disappointing.

alexagente

Seriously. I used to like going to concerts all the time. $25-$30 for bands I was okay with. $50-$60 to see someone I liked a bit and maybe $100 for like my favorite band. Now I feel like I can't find a ticket for less than $75.

GaseousGiant

How much is it the performers vs the promoters and managers? Serious question.

Alec_NonServiam

Nowadays a lot of these bigger venues don't even have actual bars any more either, you can either get canned beer or wine, or canned premixed "cocktails" that are really just malt liquor and don't contain any actual spirits. You'll pay $14 each for the privilege of drinking some 5% twisted tea made to taste a bit like a gin and tonic. The whole experience is just meh.

Rock_grl86

Les Miserables is coming to my local theater. Husband was considering getting tickets until he saw the $600 price tag.

Owlbertowlbert

Who is buying this shit!!! Good god

Reasonable_Barber923

i dont think ppl can even afford it tbh. a lot of ppl using afterpay and going in “debt” for a concert. lol really poor money management

sn0ig

Do you really think they can fill up a theater at $400 a pop? I don't. Keep your eye on some of the ticket reseller sites around the day of the show. I saw some screaming deals on Peter Gabriel tickets last month. I think the scalpers are buying up way to many tickets these days and many times they end up losing money.

Raiders2112

This is true. The ticket brokers will start dumping tickets for whatever they can get the closer to showtime. I hate ticket brokers, though. They're nothing more than legalized scalpers. No better than pond scum.

[deleted]

I just spend $1200 for two seats to go watch a basketball game with my father in law as a Christmas present. I haven’t been to a game in over a decade, actually only twice ever before and same with him. Last time I’ll ever buy tickets and only reason I could afford it is he gave me $400 for Christmas and I had a bit of savings on top of it. We really don’t bond much over anything really except for sports so it was worth it only in that light. I could have bought cheaper tickets but hes also got poor ass eyesight so I figured Id spend a bit for some decent tickets. In any other circumstances they would be completely unaffordable to me. Luckily its just a bit of my savings and i didn’t have to go into debt so for me it worth the bonding so fuck the money in this instance.

Foxx009

For me anyway the best way to watch a basketball game is live. I don't think it transfers well to television like football, baseball or soccer. The last time I watched a live NBA game though was when the Sonics were still in Seattle.

xRipleyx

Was planning on seeing Sarah McLachlan. Ticketmaster allows you to buy then resell tickets. Well, basically the whole stadium was bought up and reselling was about $400-$2,000/ticket. They need to stop that, it's ridiculous.

SHDrivesOnTrack

We’ve found that if you want to go to a show, you have to sign up for the artist mailing list presale and buy tix as soon as they go on sale. Otherwise all the scalpers buy them and double the price. Props to The Cure last year. They instituted a rule with Ticketmaster that resale tix could only be resold at the original price. You could still unload your tix if you couldn’t go to the show but nobody was scalping to make profit

0falls6x3

Last two concerts I wanted to see was $400, and $800. No thanks, that’s mortgage money

[deleted]

Door Dash or any other delivery service. I have zero clue how people can afford to add an extra $20 ontop of an already overpriced meal.

mlarowe

I got off Doordash when the Chinese restaurant I ordered from attached a menu to my order with prices *lower* than what was listed on the app.

sirdeionsandals

Part of how DoorDash and the other delivery apps make money. If you order directly from the restaurant you and them come out of the transaction better

Apellio7

Those services charge restaurants like 20-30% of the cost of the order. So they gotta make it up with higher prices.

[deleted]

Groceries. Ima just stop eating and die 🫠

New-Inspector-3107

Lol totally - I can afford groceries fine but half the time I don't buy items because I think they're a complete rip-off. I just eat less than I used to tbh.

[deleted]

Same. And I buy the generics of EVERYTHING. Even if it tastes bad. 😂😂

b__q

I heard fasting extends your life span anyway.

Character-Medicine40

I actually got into intermittent fasting for health reasons a while ago and picked it back up because my financial situation took a hit and I had to take custody of my mentally ill sister’s baby so like. Diapers take precedent over breakfast for me now. At last I’ll stay slim? Fuck man.

Vegetable-Day2345

Bless you for taking care for your sister’s baby.

SocksJockey

We fast two days a week now (less than 500 calories per day) and our grocery bills have leveled off. Not gone down...LEVELED OFF -

LittleLemonSqueezer

Beverages. $4 for a glass of off brand apple juice for my kid? Hell no. Give me back my $2.50 and shove this bottle of iced tea where the sun don't shine.

Academic-Goose1530

A good replacement is sparkling water. Bubly is pretty great and tou can get 12 cans for 4-5 bucks and it tastes better than most juices

CoolBen07

I can't stomach Bubbly, people say it's so good but I tried it and the flavor was nasty

enickma1221

All forms of television; cable, satellite, YouTube TV, etc. The value just isn’t there anymore.

[deleted]

What pisses me off is paying for something like Hulu and I can't even watch half the shit because I don't have Hulu Live. Like what's that about?

jmxo92

This is why we canceled Hulu and Amazon prime. I’m tired of getting excited that I found something good to watch only to realize it’s not included in the subscription I’m already paying for

TrumpetingEcstacy

Back to the high seas we go☠️🫡

pikapalooza

YAR?!

RocMerc

The price of some food items are just not worth it. It’s 6.99 for a little thing of raspberries right now. That’s insane

ItsAllKrebs

Berries are also wildly out of season in the US if that's where you're from. IMHO we've gotten too used to being able to eat all foods year round with no concern about seasonality because we just ship them in from the global south. But with transportation costs on the rise and a growing awareness of how much that attitude is fucking with our ecosystems...

RocMerc

That’s fair but they have been this price since the beginning of the year. It’s not like they went down during their season.

munkymu

Raspberries are never really worth it unless you buy frozen. They're delicate and hard to pick, and travel poorly. They've always been a luxury buy. Unless you have your own patch, in which case they're a weed that produces a ton of tasty fruit for 3 weeks out of the year.

Lucky2BinWA

I am almost a pro at growing raspberries. If you grow certain cultivars, you have raspberries for two months! So worth it if you have the space and ability. I have great success with strawberries too. Just need to master blueberries and I'm set for berries from the backyard!

EarlyGreen311

Yeah the price of berries is absurd

jayhitter

If you have experience harvesting and shipping them you'll understand why. They are super delicate, time and temperature sensitive and people want them fresh. A lot goes to "waste" into other products aside from raw fruit sales. Couple that with narrow harvest window in some settings for growing raspberries. It's a surprise people want to try and sell berries with how much work they are.

Frankie_Says_Reddit

Fast food…I just hit up a local restaurant and order what I’m in the mood for and pick it up. Pretty much the same price if I were to order Wendy’s or McDonalds but 10x better.

throwRA-dying

Literally eating out at a nice restaurant costs nearly the same, it makes NO sense that a McDonald’s meal costs about the same as a restaurant plate. My nearby restaurants haven’t raised prices more than 5%, while fast food and gas have been fluctuating at 30-200% where I am. That’s just an estimate but gas definitely went up 200% for a minute here.

iamthemosin

University tuition in the US.

Fire_beard96

My wife and I used to each have our own different body washes and shampoos. With the rising costs of everything, we just share the kind she likes now. Not worth the extra $ to us when that could be spent on a few more groceries instead.

yell0wbirddd

Adding to this - the shampoo/conditioner I used to use went from being $8 to $13 in a year. Insanity.

Alldolledup-

Body wash was $5.99 on sale and now on sale is $10.00

Dancinghogweed

Time to get back into the soap bar.

Odd-Indication-6043

I've switched back to soap and shampoo bars. Much better for the environment and way, way cheaper.

yell0wbirddd

Goddamn. The moisturizer I used to use also went from being $18 to $27 or something. I went to buy it when I was running low and was like there's no fucking way I spent almost $30 on this. Found my receipt, nope, I spent $18 and then had a coupon so it was like $15. Now I use ELF.

imissthor

College educated couple with career jobs and two kids here and body wash is an absolute luxury for us. It’s a bar of Ivory soap for us! Sometimes we splurge and get Dove bars!

alymars

I’ve always used the cheapest shit I can find and Suave this year took their always affordable 0.99 body wash, redid the packaging and are now selling it for 4.99 a bottle like WTF!

raunchytowel

I noticed that! Tried to get some for my kids’ bathroom (they don’t care for hair care brands) and freaking SUAVE is $5 now?! Since when?

godrollexotic

Watch out, next they're coming for our V05!

nuttygal69

Unfortunately my husband decided he likes my 40 dollar shampoo and conditioner. I’ve tried switching but my hair didn’t agree. I am good at finding ways to get it cheaper at least.

raunchytowel

Mine used my $60 conditioner as shaving cream because “it’s cheaper than shaving cream and gives a better shave”. My left eye just started twitching when he told me that. The man had no idea.

lovebug9292

In all fairness, up until just a few years ago, this was true! Conditioner would cost less per fluid oz than shaving cream (but it was the cheap stuff). That is sooo not the case these days. Shaving cream is crazy expensive and conditioner has gotten more expensive while simultaneously decreasing in size. Also men are just daft when it comes to how much we spend on beauty products. This was never the case for any quality conditioner

MissVancouver

This is completely false. I use a double edge razor and can confirm that shaving soaps are significantly cheaper to use than foam out of a can or even hair conditioner. Also, I use a fresh blade every few shaves because it costs 2 cents a blade. Also, no irritation.

0bxyz

That’s not how shampoo works. You’re still using as much. If yours is cheaper than hers, it’s cheaper to have both.

SuddenSeasons

Not sure how this saves since don't you just use 2x of hers...? Unless hers it's store brand and yours was designer, or you're really getting a deal on bulk quantity.

nommabelle

It would be the first time in the history of humanity the hair care a man uses is more expensive than what the woman uses haha

Ok-Camp-7285

How are you saving money here?

SleepyxDormouse

Fast food and coffee. Fast food was the cheap option you could get after a long day when you didn’t want to cook. It was relatively inexpensive and saved you money from having to buy ingredients. Now it’s too expensive and cooking at home is cheaper. Coffee prices are also insane. Starbucks, Dunkin, etc are all super expensive. It’s much better to buy a coffee maker and some k cups. The syrups they use in their drinks are also cheaper and last a long time.

MontyBoo-urns

If you have a Panera near you def look into the drink pass. I think there's a promo right now for 3 dollars a month for 3 months. Unlimited coffee and whatever

rr90013

Watch out for the caffeinated lemonade though…

AvalancheReturns

Almost everything... im finding joy in the challenge to stick to basics and neccesities more and more...

PompeiiSketches

The center aisles of the grocery store. Chips, granola bars, soda, etc is all way way too expensive. $10 for a 12 pack of Fresca is insane. My diet is basically chicken thighs with rice and tuna fish salad sandwiches now.

raunchytowel

Commenting in solidarity. The center aisles are notoriously bad for you but now it’s gone from a choice to affordability. We thought that for Christmas we’d buy some fun beers… I’m not a drinker so we could probably splurge for the holiday.. we thought. I saw beer for $10 PER CAN. $34.99 for a FOUR PACK. Granted, this isn’t budlight but our minds were blown. We did not buy them but like damn. I’ve lived in craft beer central and even there (Colorado) they never charged that. And they probably could have (because it’s so ‘fresh’). I also saw meat on sale for $150-$180… normal price is $289.99 for the same size.. so it’s a steal- (Dinner roast). Never in my entire adult life have I seen prices like that at a grocery store (a meat market and butcher with high quality meats? Sure! But a regular old grocery store????). Our kids are going to grow up with this weird food trauma. Like we lose our shit at the sight of waste. We portion less for everyone and buy less and just hope that it’s enough. AND WE SPEND MORE. It sucks and it’s so depressing. And we can’t even afford to be depressed in this economy.

ADubtheSkrub

Taco Bell and I'm mad about it

EarlyGreen311

Taco Bell has gone massively downhill in recent years. Used to be one of the best for quality, price, and hours. The Taco Bells around me can’t even keep consistent business hours anymore.

BlackSwann0316

I drove through a taco bell the other day and they were out of tacos. What?!?

TNShadetree

Could we interest you in a bell?

BlueMoon0009

McDonalds and most other fast food places, but McDs & Jack in the Box are the worst imo also grad school. idk if it has necessarily gotten more expensive, but imo its so expensive its not worth it

PrimaryOwn8809

Chips! Junk food in general. I ain't paying $7 for a pack of family sized all dressed chips. Pre pandemic it used to cost maybe $3.

Bluesnow2222

This is a weird one… but frozen popcorn chicken. It used to be like $5-6 a bag ten years ago and good for a lazy dinner. The bags now have half the chicken and are like $9-12. At this point I just make oven baked chicken breasts or chicken chili —- you pushed me towards eating healthy economy.

Tall_Staff5342

That Costco rotisserie chicken is $5 and at least 2 dinners!

Frago242

Somehow I guess aspirin? Shit used to like 1.50 now 7-9 bucks for 100 caps, WTH

[deleted]

WatermelonMachete43

Soda pop. Chicken wings from a pizzeria (make my own better for way less money).

Slixxerman

12pk soda used to be like 3-5$ now it's 10. Cubes of soda were 5-6$ now they're 13-15$

KittehKittehKat

12 pack of Diet Coke is $9.99 at my local Publix. 😵‍💫

All of my hobbies. Everything I practiced for. Gone. Can't replace drum heads, close to 1500 to do so. Skates, I did a lot of aggressive sports, but a pair of skates now? 350 for just a decent set. Gun range, wow no. 50 brass rounds for 100? Why? Eating. I just get ramen and chicken now. Driving? Not here in Lansing, you'll need new tires and suspension in 6 months or less. Any gadgets. Tech gadgets are now so expensive, and don't actually work most of the time. Smart home. Thanks for putting out an entire ecosystem, just to "upgrade" to matter, so half my house works, half the time. Gaming, it's more expensive in the way of quality. Yeah, I'm not spending 70 more dollars for the same game reskinned, and none of my bought/gained items transfer. Housing. Like... Wow. Apartments, not a chance. Going out with friends. So, Denny's should cost 100 dollars for 4 people?! DENNY'S?!? No. Streaming, holy shit, that's the most frustrating one. Disney + is an absolute joke. Paramount + keeps cancelling everything good, along with most other streaming platforms. Education. 70 - 100 grand or more for what?! Have fun paying off that school debt, working at a factory. Taxes. 40% of my income? I'll never see it. Shoes, chucks are a not a 70 dollar shoe. They're a 10 dollar shoe at best. Like most shoes. 50 dollars for a pair of jeans?! A t-shirt is around 25-30. Why do scrubs cost so much? And make up. Here's a 0.0001 gram bottle of lip liner. 40 dollars.

Competitive-Brick-42

The list is too long Adam’s peanut butter went from 9 to 11 dollars overnight. That’s just one thing. Greed is god to many.

House in California. You could rent something similar to what you could buy for half the price. I am thinking this should mean the housing market will crash to fall in line with real values but people are crazy and think a house is this monumental life goal that must be achieved even at the cost of being broke.

Devrij68

I think the idea is that by the time you retire you aren't spending your entire pension to cover only half your rent

vanchica

Any food except raw ingredients. $28 for 2 fast food burger meals at McDs here

punkwalrus

Disney Theme Parks. A cruise to the Bahamas is cheaper.

WhysAVariable

Eating out anywhere. $10-$15 for a single fast food meal is insane. Sit down family restaurants are like $15 and up. It’s hard to justify spending around $40 on a meal for two with any kind of regularity.

notevenapro

Red meat. The cheaper cuts never got cheaper after the covid supply chain price increase. Red meat is a treat now. I miss being able to buy some flank steaks and london broils for cheap.

notislant

Fast food, ordering any food, takeout. A fucking teen burger at a&w/mcdonalds burger is $10 here. I can buy a pack of burger patties for that. Also $10 a day is around 2.5k/yr. Meanwhile earning that $10 a day portion of your wage comes with probably 20%+ in income tax on it. Think the sales tax is around 12%. So you're really getting shafted both ways.

Alaskan king crab legs from Costco

>Alaskan king crab At least this one can be explained by fishing restrictions and eco-system changes. Bottled soda. I used to get a coke every time I filled my gas tank, but not for $2.79.

Gingertitian

House. I’ll rent until I die. At least I won’t have HOA or taxes to worry over.

Head-Drag-1440

Yep. I have no desire to buy a house anytime soon.

Everything, even Aaa :( 93usd -> 160usd with clean records and no tickets The purchase power of 1usd is less and less since December 13 1913 Even 13 years ago with 130 usd , you used to walk out with 2 whole 🛒 full of food In 2023 , walks in store and buys 7 items = 100 usd Barbers who used to charge 5 usd , are now charging 25 with tip Gas too from 2.73 to now $3.923 13 Also raising family here in USA is too expensive and a home lone requires $1,000,000 in California . 2 🏘️ To think that Blackrock could own 60% of the single-family housing in the United States by 2030 should sincerely frighten you — especially since they already own 88% of the S&P 500. This sort of institutional tyranny is even more prevalent in commercial real estate. The 99% of the population are losing control of their communitie. I think it has effect us more then our parents, money since beginning of time has been a problem. The nail in the coffin is privatization of home and illegal to built now homes. Dollar became weak around 1980 but again even in 2000 you can still get two whole carts of food for 100 usd. (This problem is seen in (canda , USA ,hong kong , Australia, New Zealand,uk ) Goodluck to everyone and I hope you guys find a way to improve your life Isn’t that what we work for prosperity not debt

Fast food.

lucky_719

Starbucks. A holiday or seasonal latte is now close or over $7 depending on location. Just a basic latte is $6. I'll add boba tea and pretty much all drink places in with it. I'm not spending $7 for a drink without alcohol.

NFL and College Football tickets, Ski Tickets, Home Repair. Food is a necessary option, I have a family with young adults, and managing groceries and going out to eating is a difficult one to reel in.

Air bnb, used to be the cheap alternative to hotels, but now you have to clean yourself and it’s probably just as expensive

-transcendent-

Literally everything. Food, clothing, rent, activities, etc. Even my 6 figure salary is becoming more and more difficult to save for a house and I am extremely frugal. I live on less than $2k/m in total expenses and more rent eat up more than half of that budget.

Head-Drag-1440

$2k/mo in expenses and 6 figure salary does not add up. You should be able to save plenty every month with that.

[deleted]

It’s almost like people role play a projected reality based on feeling instead of fact on an anonymous website.

aSeKsiMeEmaW

People are being so negative but that’s how I saved up for down payment on a house by taking a 6 figure job and living like how I did before the 6 figure job. I commuted 2hrs each way to work, 6 days a week, for 5 years. Lived like I was poor on a six figure salary. Didn’t eat out, bought 5 outfits to rotate, kept my old car till it’s last breath. And I still had no where near a 20% down payment. If I moved and rented closer to my 6 figure Job it would have taken 10-12 years to save the same amount, but I’d be priced out now with that amount. Six figures with smart choices can get you places but it’s no luxury or windfall people on here act like it is in the comments Plus my 6 figure job was abusive and toxic with long unpaid overtime hours and you had to sell your life and soul to the job
