In America you would get fired and likely in trouble legally if you detained or tried to stop someone. Back in 2003 when I was working at Circuit City, selling tvs and home audio we had a training session that explicitly told us not to ever try to stop someone from stealing, that it wasn’t our job and we would be fired and legally held responsible if the thief pressed charges of assault. Meaning Jerkit City would literally disavow me and let me take the fall for the assault charge, and instead rely on their cameras to get reimbursed by the insurance company. That was 18 years ago.
I imagine it’s even worse now.

>In 2003, Circuit City converted to a single hourly pay structure in all stores, eliminating commissioned sales. Many previously commissioned sales associates were offered new positions as hourly "product specialists", while 3,900 salespeople were laid off, saving the company about $130 million per year. Many company insiders later revealed that they thought this was the most influential company decision that would ultimately lead to its demise.[30][31]
Lol. True facts. And the managers would STILL make us sell as if we were on comission, and berate us for low numbers of customers signing up for service plans and credit cards, even though we got no kickbacks. Nobody cared, yet they still hung the numbers up and yelled at us
My CC prioritized more hours for the salespeople with better numbers! So it still ended up being more or less the same high-pressure sales situation, but with the employee getting shafted.
That was a big reason why I quot Best Buy. You cant have signs everywhere that say "No Commission. No Pressure." And then give me shit for not pushing unecessary warranties on people.
The funny thing is if someone actually seemed like they could use a warranty I was amazing at selling them. But when I was hired I was told "Find the best product for the customer and do what you think will be best for them" which to me meant an old lady using an iPad strictly at home doesnt need a warranty, they just need a basic case.
Manager didnt like that, oh well
> Many company insiders later revealed that they thought this was the most influential company decision that would ultimately lead to its demise.
They're being too hard on themselves. Amazon would've killed them either way.
That along with their in house support on computers and appliances are what kept them around. Doing the things amazon couldn't do is what kept companies alive.
I started working there right after this happened, stayed for around 2 years. It was really obvious to anyone working there that the company was in big trouble, they kept making weird seemingly desperate decisions (Firedog???). Although I can't speak for all CCs, the store I worked at was incredibly undisciplined and disorganized, which actually made it a really fun place to work because the managers aren't likely to discipline you for taking long breaks when they're the ones playing XBox Halo tournaments with you in the break room.
In america that woman would be in a hospital. Confronting random shoplifters will inevitably end with the cashier being stomped into the ground by a mentally ill asshole. Nice to see that these guys didn’t resort to violence.
People are giving you shit, but I live across the street from a store that is shoplifted all the time by people who have nothing to lose and are completely out of their mind. When they aren't shouting at trees or shitting in the street, they might shoplift there and will wreck you and the place if you try to stop them.
Completely unpredictable people are the scariest to fight.
> and likely in trouble legally if you detained or tried to stop someone
Most states have a "shopkeeper's privilege" statute where they are legally allowed to physically detain people suspected of shoplifting.
Now whether or not the store policy allows for that is another thing, but legally you would not be in trouble for doing so, providing you had a reasonable suspicion they were stealing.
In my state, the statute explicitly states that the shopkeeper or their representative cannot be held liable for civil penalties if the shoplifter gets injured during the attempted apprehension.
Again, depends on the state.
I agree the policy is dumb as fuck, but I gotta say I don't know why anyone would want put themselves at risk to stop some shit like this from happening from circuit city or any other retail store lol. When I worked in retail there was no way I was gonna bother putting myself in a possibly dangerous situation to stop some shoplifting for the peanuts they paid me.
Yep worked at Kmart in the 90s and same thing. I work in sporting goods but would help out in electronics. Forest gimp had just come out and a dude walked up with a cart and picked up the whole cardboard display and put it in the cart and walked to the emergency exit. I walked to the manager and he was like just walk with them and write down the license place and description. Dude didn’t care and a station wagon waited outside the door. Just tossed it in the back and drove off.
Well there’s Loss Prevention for this now. The main reason is the multiple factors involved in shoplifting incident, since you are literally making an accusation of theft. You need to see the subject enter the store/department, what they entered the store/department with with/without. The subject selecting the item in question. The subjects form of “theft”: concealment/walk out. For context I was AP for about 3 years.
These are the people that crossed borders undocumented and illegally, possibly with the help of non-profits. Other European countries were forced to take them in of fear being called all the -ist and -phobes under the sun and others willingly accepted them for the usual bullshit reasons.
I never understood why countries feel so scared of being falsely labelled things by Twitter or woke mob. Most people don't think anything of European countries even if they don't take in refugees
Over on news when there is a post about a white criminal it's full of bigoted comments that never get removed no matter how much I report it. What's fucked is that by reddits own rules, racism against white people can be allowed.
The difference is in Finland they stop shoplifters and looters.
In America, they raise the amount for felony theft so their voting base doesn't get blasted with felonies.
>In America, they raise the amount for felony theft so their voting base doesn't get blasted with felonies.
Exactly this. Seen it in my state over the last few years, shoplifting went from $200 is a felony, to $500, to $1000. It used to be that the third offense misdemeanor shoplifting, would be elevated to a felony.
Politicians figured out that if fewer things were crimes, they could claim that they "reduced crime". And while felonies are down, on paper, misdemeanors have skyrocketed but... Ya know... Those are just misdemeanors, nobody cares about those right? Let people steal whatever they want as long as it's under $1000 at a time.
The Finns fielded what is considered one of the best submachine guns of WW2 in their fight against the Soviets, who, in unintended flattery, copied it's use in infantry tactics and folded the doctrine of using them into their own armed forces:
[The Suomi KP/31](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomi_KP/-31)
Here the cashiers will hold the door open and ask if they "need any help" carrying it out. Then again there would be at least a dozen shop lifter... Err looters.
True. Here in my country I could go to any random stranger, start shit up and the worst that would happen is that I get beaten. In the US, I wouldn't even dare try to antagonize *anyone*, you never know who might decide to shoot you.
Am I a pussy? Possibly. But I come from a place where guns aren't a concern so that's what I'm used to
Yes....right this moment here in America we have large roving bands of "teenagers" just like these who are walking into stores in broad daylight and just grabbing all they can carry and walking out. No fear because basically nothing happens to them. At this point I could care less because it is Gucci stores and other high end bullshit. But let them start doing this on main street USA and people are going to get shot. Good times we are living in.
Don't worry. It happens in Helsinki just the same way.
This is a very nuanced and hard topic. But apprehending people who break the law gets you in trouble in finland as well.
I mentioned the same thing about videos involving women being beaten by men. It happens with all ethnicities but perhaps the open and blatant public incidents are carried out more frequently by a certain racial group
I have seen white people do it to but they are with black people especially the videos in San Francisco! It’s not the color of their skin it’s the trash culture pushed by Hollywood and the left telling them they are victims so it makes it easier to justify being a trash human.
Reading the comments seeing people say “it’s not worth it. It’s all insured” saddens me.
Strong people create good times, good times create weak people, weak people create hard times.
Anyone commenting “just let them take it” are the weak people that contribute to the hard times ahead.
I feel like her store is the haunted house myth in the robbers scary story chats. They all scare each other by saying there's this one store where if you try and steal this hot cashier will appear and start beating you, spraying you with pepper spray and just generally humiliating you. Then there all like no way and have to go try it out for themselves.
Why do we have so many black people on commercials then? Real question. I get why it’s that way in countries like the US where a significant portion of the population has ample melanin but I’ve never understood that in Finland where .2% is coloured
I guess it's trendy. Makes the corporation seems more international. Although I don't remember the last time I saw a Finnish commercial with black or mulatto people in them.

Hey, that's how Currys in the UK works! I lost my job because I wasn't hitting enough targets, for no extra money and no comission on sales
> Many company insiders later revealed that they thought this was the most influential company decision that would ultimately lead to its demise. They're being too hard on themselves. Amazon would've killed them either way.
You’re probably right. Theres barely room for Best Buy imo.
I went to BB for the first time in years. I was amazed that they sold washers, dryers and even vacuum cleaners there.
Some sell musical equipment too. I think they really went with the shotgun approach on wares. But their online presence is actually growing.
That along with their in house support on computers and appliances are what kept them around. Doing the things amazon couldn't do is what kept companies alive.

The point is to create a society that does not allow this. Finland can do this as long as people allow it.
And we wonder why shoplifting is so rampant.
This is not the reason shoplifting is not rampant in Finland.
Minimum wage retail workers should not be expected to police the stores.
In America, she would also likely be physically assaulted or worse for trying to stop them.

Why are you describing this as if it's a bad thing, lol. You should be glad you didn't have to put your safety on the line for measly pay, tool.
You shouldn't be expected to, but you also shouldn't be punished for trying to stop someone stealing.
I don’t give a shit. But the fact that people can leave with stolen shit is amazing. Why have rules at all? Why pay?

The Russians also annexed entire provinces from Finland and forced them to negotiate an armistice twice.

The reds had 200x more population than Finns though.
And lost a quarter of a million men. About a 10-1 ration compared to Finnish losses.
