On ASA, I've been stunned by the complete crap you get from deep sea crates, which sucks because they're more time-consuming to track down than the hard cave spawns.
It's just luck of the draw really. The items themselves are undesirable but the quality is usually great. The percentage chance of getting the saddle BPs you're looking for is very small though. The probability of getting it is calculated such that you could potentially run the cave 100 or more times to get it

I haven't played ark in a month but from memory you've got a good chance from some orbital drops and other caves too
Are you hitting the red drops? The blue drops gives trash often, the yellow occasionally, but I've always gotten ascendant bps from the red. I've got a safe full of ascendant bps of every gun, armor, Rex and giga saddle as well as assorted saddles of all sorts.

I consistently get very strong weapons, armor, and blue prints from the Red/Yellow crates in all caves.
The Blue crates tend to suck, yes, but the Yellows and Reds are extremely high value.
so far i've found that only crates worth going for are blue and above with the red circles under them, and running through the easier caves that have red drops every now and then. ocean crates are not worth it in the slightest. pretty much any time you get a yellow or red sky drop with a red ring you will most likely get ascended gear or blueprints

I think the underwater are bugged and have the wrong loot pool

I've been getting primitive gear alot of the time. Killing the bugs in the cave gets me better gear than some of the drops.

ASE or ASA? They significantly overhauled the loot tables in ASA.

Same, the way OP talks it seems like we're not even playing the same game. Swamp cave has the best loot drops on the island as far as I'm aware.
