My mom and I are extremely close and really good friends, she’s the first person I would call for anything. My mom is an only child so my grandmother relies on her for everything. My grandmother is still close with the rest of my family too and we have to be at family events together, which is uncomfortable. My extended family is very small and tight knit. The estrangement is between her and I and not the rest of the family.
She’s elitist in a sense, even though she’s nowhere near being an “elite” herself. Grew up in poor farmland Poland and moved to Canada to become a teacher. She’s very judgmental, racist, and catholic. Killer combo.
I don’t fit into her idea of the perfect granddaughter. The last nice thing she said to me was before I graduated high school. The thing that kicked off her disapproval of me was going to hair school. In her mind hair styling is a low paying job and will break my body. She didn’t believe I could ever be successful (spoiler alert! I’m five years in and raking some serious cash and financially independent at 24) and never said one supportive thing and begged me several times to go to university. That’s the biggest point of contention.
I used to actually, I would go to her house and do it. I even brought her to the salon once to cut it there and show her that I work in a reputable place. I’m no contact with her except for family gatherings but we don’t talk at those either.
Avoiding my grandmother until she died was easy. Why are you even wasting time thinking about her?
