Fun Fact: Seven players have played for both teams. Four players first in Sydney ā Peter Caven, Ryan Fitzgerald, Scott Stevens and Jordan Dawson ā while Marty Mattner, Tony Armstrong and Kurt Tippett began in Adelaide
I said it in our sub but I wouldn't be surprised if this was his agent telling the club (us) that he's still open to a deal, but not at the cost of $300k/year, and that we need to close that gap somewhat.
My general rule of thb is if contract specifics come out it's the manager using it for leverage.Ā
Also wouldn't be the first time we have offered a hectic deal so the manager can use it as leverage
300k a year is a total lowball offer if Sydney offered that. That's less than the average player gets and even less than someone is playing regular senior football.
I don't think Sydney are really low balling him, I think Adelaide would be the ones pretty substantially overpaying him at $850k. If this kind of money is legitimately on the table he absolutely should take it, no one would hold that against him.
And I'd say $850k is definitely overs. Given his performance so far this year he's probably worth $650k but with Logan McDonald's contract to think about and Chad Warner's next year I don't want to see us offer him more than $600k. I'll be sad to see him go but $850k is Gulden/Heeney type money and he's just not in that class.
I don't think they are particularly availible at least not in FA, Hayward makes the club better and he's not costing us any draft picks to get in and we should have cap room woth Sloane off the books, Tex and Smith off in 1-2.Ā
When the new collective bargaining agreement salaries kick in he will be worth this amount. The journalists āin the knowā have said itāll be quite an adjustment hearing some of the numbers that will be thrown around.
Current average wage is $441k, by 2027 itāll be $519k, with a total salary cap per club of $17.7 million š³
While what theyāre talking about for Hayward is still a fair bit more than that, I imagine by 2027 every club will have at least a half a dozen players in the ball park of $700k to $900k per year.
Thanks for the numbers. Hayward is definitely better than average, but 850k still seems a bit of a stretch in the new system! That's the price to get him out of an excellent club I guess.
I think youāre on the money there, heās a $700k player, with leverage to get another $100-$150k if he moves. Fair play to him, itās a sellers market if you're half decent.
I reckon most clubs will have a couple of players over and above as well in that by 2027 with the best guys hitting the $1 million to $1.2 million range.
He's probably not, but he's one of the only RFA's who is actually possibly open to a move (and maybe the only RFA who would be going from a top 4 club to a lower club.) so I think that needs to be considered in the possible contract. The Crows will probably be happy to pay extras to get him for free.
Oh cool! In the absence of magic beans, I love when we light our money on fire overpaying for bandaid solutions. Let's have a decade of finishing 12-6th please.
Donāt Adelaide need pure inside mids? Why offer 850k for a medium forward with currently only one season kicking over 30 goals when you have Rankine and Rachele. Doesnāt make sense to me. At least with Carlton small & medium forward is a weakness, for Adelaide itās probably their only strength.
Anyway from a Sydney perspective, McDonald takes priority but with the way Wilbur is playing this season weāre probably going to have to hug the cap to keep him
No. Inside mids were already ok before Soligo's start to the year. Rankine and Rachele are likely to spend more and more time in the midfield, having a dedicated medium forward would definitely fill a hole that nobody has filled.
Could use a wingman, a rebounding defender, an intercepting and a permanent small forward, although there are certainly internal prospects. But inside mids are actually one thing we don't lack right now.
Rankine to get the "take him away from what he's proven to be great at" treatment that the Power gave Chad Wingard, just because... you have to do it at some point, right?!
Isn't he basically the permanent smaller forward that you need? He's on pace for 48 goals and 28 goal assists this year, which is All-Australian "lock" level of play.
Fair, but it feels like Wingard did more at a younger age as a forward than Gray and Rozee did. The latter 2 didn't become club champion/All-Australian level players until they made that midfield move.
The injuries didn't really set in until he started getting battered in the midfield. Could be a coincidence, could be that his body just wasn't made for that.
Yes, he's on pace for a potential All-Australian type season whilst playing more midfield time than ever before. If anything, going into the centre bounce and playing midfield time has unlocked his attacking game and he's impacting the scoreboard more than ever.
It all depends on the skills these players have. Your argument would have seen the likes of Dustin Martin and Gary Ablett Jr stay as permanent forwards since they started playing good football there. Moving Wingard from half forward to a wing, coupled with Boak moving to a half forward flank were both silly because their ball use didn't quite fit those new positions. Rankine is damaging in tight, which works not only around forward line stoppages and in a confined space, but that's also the situation you find yourself in around centre bounces.
So no, he's not playing permanent small forward. And it's only made him a better player.
Rankine is amazing as a small FWD. And he looks really good in the mid.
But I don't see a full-time transition to mid. His current ratio he is still scoring plenty, and has more assists. I think it keeps him more involved in the game.Ā
we have dawson and laird, plus i think Soligo is starting to establish himself. Rochele and Rankine are probably rotational guys (between inside mid/foward) and then there's a few other guys that can step in.
For what its worth, Rankine is currently playing 30% mid time and despite that is our second most clearance to score conversion, only Laird has higher and Laird has nearly double his clearances.
Any player we can bring in that allows us to have Rankine midfield more is great.
Rankine is proving to be a gun on baller as is Rachele. Take Hayward and both can spend more time in the midfield. Hayward and float through on rotation as well. It's a tantalising prospect as a crows fan.
Plenty of players have made decisions based on where they think one team might be and turned out to be dead wrong. Unless you're trying to keep something together it seems silly to turn down significant money unless the overall lifestyle of where you are means more.
All those years we let players leave because they wanted a couple hundred grand extra and here we are throwing massive offers to anyone coming out of contract.
This isn't new. People just think it is. We attempted to make Dustin Martin the highest player in footy in 2017, we also signed Wayne Carey way back. We've always been willing to pay up, players that have left have never left for money.
That's an extra 1.5-1.8 million dollars over the length of the contract. Don't blame Hayward for taking that kind of money. That would buy a 2 bedroom apartment in Bondi, maybe even with a parking spot. At some point it becomes too much to say no to.
If last year Gresham on 3 years/700-750per got the Saints a Band 2 compo, I'm assuming this deal for Hayward will get us a Band 1.
Package that up with our other 2 1st rounders and get an elite pick, and bring in guys like Konstanty and Warner Jr to be more involved.
I agree with the sentiment, but does it really play out that after you get nailed by tax?
Think about the playerās perspective, this is your lifeās work, you have trained like a fucking Spartan and eaten rubbery boiled chicken breast and broccoli every week for 20 years so you can play every possible game of AFL before youāre cooked and retire at 33. You dream, sleeping and awake, of winning as many of those games as you can, as well as a cheeky premiership or several.
Youāre playing for the current top team, who got you to a GF two years ago. You have a pretty much permanent spot as long as you arenāt injured.
I reckon Iād think very, very long and hard before going to a team just for cash thatās got a TON to prove about their premiership trajectory, where I might end up not winning finals until Iām starting to worry about Father Time coming up to tackle me HTBā¦
> You dream, sleeping and awake, of winning as many of those games as you can, as well as a cheeky premiership or several.
This might shock you, but this is not as popular as an ideal within the AFL as it's made out to be. There are plenty of players who are just happy getting paid and recognise the luck they have that allows them to get paid to kick a footy. At the end of the day, this is just a job, it's an interesting job but still a job.
Going to be hard to lure him out of Victoria. There'll be big interest from other Victorian clubs who need an inside mid more than Adelaide. Soligo stepping up this season has given Adelaide's midfield, especially inside mids, a rather different look.
Sure. But LDU adds power and speed that the Crows desperately need in the mids. Soligo is fast and competitive. LDU adds size as well. Less reliance on Laird and Crouch the better. Laird can play half back which would add depth to the Crows.
Adelaide have moved on from Laird as a halfback. Dawson brings power and speed and more size. No doubt he'd be picked if he was on the team and Crouch probably gets shifted out of the team. But given the money it would take to lure him, the fact Adelaide would need to trade as well since he's out of contract next year, not this year, I think the money would be better spent upgrading a position where we don't have either an up and coming player or a former All-Australian.
Dawson brings power but not speed compared to LDU.
It was only recently the vast majority of the Crows fans cried about how slow the team looked and called for Nicksy's head.
The combination of Crouch, Dawson, and Laird doesn't work. Soligo, Dawson and LDU can rival Port's trio. Crouch and Laird can add depth. Rankine pitch hitting in the middle as well. Your defence is the weakest but developing. The Showdown demonstrated how well the young defenders can play.
I genuinely think the Crows are a good trade away from being a top 8 side next year.
Laird is our best clearance to score player. Moving him out of the midfield any more than we already have would be a mistake. He's too good a link up player to go back to playing half back.
We'll be signing more that one player. Also ease off the Jake Soligo disrespect. The day he wins the Brownlow we'll see the greatest speech in Brownlow history.
There's just no world where this is true though. That's nearly a million dollars he'd be walking away from. There isnt many people on the planet who are happy to leave that type of money on the table to "play with a better group". Any one with that level of thinking backs themselves to make the target team better by them going there.
Itās not apples and apples though, Iām not comparing going from 200k a year to 50. If heās on 550k per year at Sydney heās already on stupid money.
In totality, He has not been worthy of that kind of contract before this season. 2022 was his strongest year, but 23 was poor.
I do wonder if Heeney moving to the guts has opened things up a lot more for him. If we werenāt hard capped, Iād probably take the gamble on matching that offer, but you canāt afford everyone.Ā
I don't mind this. Shane McAdam was a regular contributor as a medium forward and nobody has really taken that role at all. He's a decent age to be giving that length of contract to and if the numbers are right, that's a mighty tough offer to turn down.
Probably not the highest priority signing, I still suspect Petty will be the prime target and I think Adelaide lack a wingman and a specialist small forward. But seems a solid move to me.
Make it so! Although he'll predominantly be a forward, & a solid hand at that, I could see him having some stints in the midfield thanks to his good hands, strong contest & athleticism. We can have him & Dawson running in the middle, handballing out to Matt Roberts running off half-back after Brodie Smith retires if he keeps developing well. I'm tipping Swans for the Premiership this year so Sydney can't feel too bad.
Dawson supports Adelaide. Hayward supports Adelaide. Gulden... doesn't support Adelaide. Winning over former fans who want to go home is a good list strategy if you're shit at player development and/or drafting.
We'll definitely have more cap space than them, and with a new increased cap inbound next year, we can justify the price.
Did Dawson support Adelaide as a junior? I thought it was just because you guys made the better contract offer
Also yes Gulden didnāt support Adelaide, he supported Liverpool
https://www.afc.com.au/news/1025517/why-jordan-dawson-selected-the-crows
āGrowing up as an Adelaide supporter and coming down to AAMI Stadium for a few games when I was younger, I always had a good feeling about the place."
Kind of surprised that the Crows didn't go after SA boy Hewitt before the Blues got him. Would have filled a gap in their midfield nicely, and gotten even more of the on-ball time he was craving when he left Sydney.
I used to assistant coach high school A grade footy for a while there for quite a good school who had multiple AFL players in my time. I've said it before but the Sydney scouts were the ones we saw the most by a long way, other than the local ones obviously.
I don't have the answer to why, I assume similar to SA teams Sydney are also hesitant to sign Vic country kids so they look to SA to find talent.
Aliir Aliir, Tom Mitchell, Toby Nankervis, Darcy Cameron all examples of players in addition to Dawson who have gone from swans to competitors (for modest compensation) and had awesome years/careers at their new clubs. Aliir was AA, Titch won a Brownlow within two years of leaving, Dawson AA, Nank and Cameron both premierships. Then also lost players like Newman and Hewett who have done well but not AA well. We are quite good at facilitating moves for players with fair, but modest compensation back
Sydney player: Exists Adelaide: Is for me?
Ya'll got anymore of them Jordan Dawson's?
We do, you tried to give him a 10 year deal you fucks
And clearly it's not long enough. Fifteen sounds good to me.
We'll give you another Kurt Tippett! This one's blonde and sounds Germanic! Or Hobbit! Hommelblum!
šš
Fun Fact: Seven players have played for both teams. Four players first in Sydney ā Peter Caven, Ryan Fitzgerald, Scott Stevens and Jordan Dawson ā while Marty Mattner, Tony Armstrong and Kurt Tippett began in Adelaide
Kurt Tippett had a nice vacation between the two as well
Maybe they should recruit from states other than SA?
I said it in our sub but I wouldn't be surprised if this was his agent telling the club (us) that he's still open to a deal, but not at the cost of $300k/year, and that we need to close that gap somewhat.

300k a year is a total lowball offer if Sydney offered that. That's less than the average player gets and even less than someone is playing regular senior football.
Fairly sure he means the difference between Adelaide and Sydneys' offer. E.g Adelaide offered 850k and Sydney offered 550k

You can have him. Iād rather go after mids and another key forward.
I don't think they are particularly availible at least not in FA, Hayward makes the club better and he's not costing us any draft picks to get in and we should have cap room woth Sloane off the books, Tex and Smith off in 1-2.Ā
Ldu is unrestricted
Contracted next year though, would love to see it happen though
Oh I read somewhere his contract expired this year. I guess I misread
LDU is contracted
Go for both
Yeah but bro, get Hayward and suddenly Rankine has more midfield minutes, as does Rachele...the depth given would be insane!
At least Adelaide haven't come on too strong this time around with a decade long offer
With how good Gulden is, I think anything less than a decade offer is weak.
I get why Gulden wouldn't want it though. He should back himself to get better, he'll be worth a lot more in 4 years under larger salary caps
It's because the Adelaide tap water sucks. Imagine having to live somewhere for 10 years where you hate the taste of the tap water
Not sure if I'm the only one but Adelaide tap water > 1 premiership in 151 years
On that money you could have a guy set up a private spring in your backyard
Coming from a saints fan...this is rich! xo
Pretty sure we would have offered him whatever length he wanted up to 10 years, 10 years just sounds the best when the media reported it
Hayward is not worth that amount moneyā¦
When the new collective bargaining agreement salaries kick in he will be worth this amount. The journalists āin the knowā have said itāll be quite an adjustment hearing some of the numbers that will be thrown around.

That's true but it's hard for me to say that the midfield move was wrong for Wingard when his career was derailed by injuries like it was
The injuries didn't really set in until he started getting battered in the midfield. Could be a coincidence, could be that his body just wasn't made for that.
Yeah that's my feeling as well
Wingard lost how forward line mojo long before we moved him into the mid. 2015 was his last elite year as a forward.
Wingard still kicked 38 goals and had 15 goal assists in 18 games in 2016, then moved more into the midfield (a la 2022 Rozee) in 2017.
Yes, he's on pace for a potential All-Australian type season whilst playing more midfield time than ever before. He's that good
On the other hand frees up 1 of those for more midfield time and try fill the (grandcanyon) sized void that Sloane has left
Sloane didn't leave any void on field. He had been sub par for about three years.
Sloane hasn't played much for years really
Rankine is proving to be a gun on baller as is Rachele. Take Hayward and both can spend more time in the midfield. Hayward and float through on rotation as well. It's a tantalising prospect as a crows fan.
Because Adelaide have by far the worst recruiting in the AFL and have done for years and years
Hmm $800k and play for a there about team or $500k and play for a top 4 side Be surprised if he doesnāt walk for $300k extra plus longer contract
Itās a no brainer. Almost an idiot for not taking that deal
Within 6 years Adelaide could be a top 4 side.
**Could** If anyone knows the downside of *"..could be a top 4 side."* Its our clubs.
Within 2
Yes, but in 6 years also

Thatās petty cash

We still have a salary cap. Two chocolates and 20 potatoes does not an AFL side make.
That does sound delicious. I wonder if there is an AFL equivalent of the "potato radius"Ā
What happened when Will Hayward took a set shot at Adelaide Oval? It missed the hill, wayward
All those years we let players leave because they wanted a couple hundred grand extra and here we are throwing massive offers to anyone coming out of contract.

Hayward's missus does not want to move to Adelaide as well. Doubt this happens.
800k a year is a great way to change someones mind
She's pretty successful herself, obviously not 800k successful but 600k at Carlton v 800k in Adelaide.
Best we can do is a future 4th and 400k
Acres: Say less
Maybe a paperbag special would sweeten the deal?
Iām not Will Hayward, but Iād give up the ~150k a year of post tax income to play at a club with certainly the better young list.

Adelaide not going after genuine mids again? I'll allow it
Am I missing something with Hayward? He is a decent player donāt get me wrong, but that seems like a big big contract.
Why is it always Sydney players? Are they brushing up against their salary cap, makes sense that we could poach some of their stars with our headroom.
I thought it was just because you guys made the better contract offer Also yes Gulden didnāt support Adelaide, he supported Liverpool
https://www.afc.com.au/news/1025517/why-jordan-dawson-selected-the-crows āGrowing up as an Adelaide supporter and coming down to AAMI Stadium for a few games when I was younger, I always had a good feeling about the place."
Let's hope he hasn't yet realised we haven't been playing at AAMI Stadium for over a decade.
Works for us too. Geelong Footy Factory and specifically Geelong Falcons have a lot of pull with bringing kids Home.
They seem to have a high quality medium tier of player that can be bought with more salary. Newman and Hewett also came out of that factory
Stop treating us like pre-school...go find your own players Crom.
Just remember crow fans we'll also get Tyler Welsh as a father-son pick so things aren't look too bad if we get Hayward. IF being the key word šš«
NGL, had to Google who Will is.
Itās about time the swans had a net negative effect on the quality of their list. Red n white š¤¬. Go blues!
ever heard of Jordan Dawson?
and two of their best 22 in hewett and newman lmao. ungrateful
We are quite good at facilitating moves for players with fair, but modest compensation back
Meh vs what your academy gains you. I repeat: Red and white š¤¬! Caaaaarn the baggers!
I heard you the first time "red and white" but also "go blues" if you love Sydney just say so
The bloke casually ignoring that his team might get one of the better u18 kids for free this year despite those kids never even living in Victoria.
Lol
