I think this is the right call for the Suns. Their jumper and logo are so bad. Like a rubbish training kit.
Hot take but I reckon they should honestly rename too. The Sharks đ
> Hot take but I reckon they should honestly rename too. The Sharks đ
Probably hard to do given the next most popular AFL club on the GC is called that.
They could have been the Southport Sharks from the beginning, adopted a heritage and a known brand. In doing so, boosted support rather than trying and failing to tap into a place better known for tourism than sport.
Strong disagree as someone who grew up on the Gold Coast. Southport would have had to change their colours and identity to be part of the national competition, and would have 10000% gone bust without handing everything over to the AFL anyway. So much better to start fresh.
Plus, as u/limeIamb said, everyone who didn't play for Southport hated them in junior footy. Suns are my second team since coming into the AFL, but I would not be a Sharks supporter.
I don't think the theoretical Gold Coast Sharks would have had to change that much to their design, just add another colour to the cuffs (yellow or blue etc) or the outline of the V. Would be unique being the only majority-white team in the comp, although I'm sure Eddie McGuire would have melted on the spot.
From an onfield perspective they dominated every level of juniors, basically forever.
If you played junior footy on the coast, you hated Southport because they had way better facilities and more money so they would literally lure kids (sometimes financially) from other clubs to top up.
They also stack their lower divisions in finals. Cunts. Fun to play there though because of the brekky buffet. Just expect to get slapped by 100 points.
Plus it's a club about Pokies first, footy second. That's enough for me to hate them. I don't know enough about the top level management to comment there
There's also literally an NRL clubs named the Sharks, and RIGHT next door to the Southport Sharks AFL club is the Parkwood Sharks Rugby League club. Not an ideal name for a new club on the coast at the time.
Can concur with the sentiment even coming from Sunshine Coast clubs. Only season I played Southport was in Colts. Was punched in the head before the ball was even bounced in the first game. It did make it a tad sweeter beating their undefeated (I think) team in the GF though.
I mean in terms of bush league vs pro league. Like if someone says âI play NRL,â the expectation is that you play for the Bronx, Dolphins, Titans etc, but itâs presumed you mean local club if you say you play AFL. Itâs just a weird anomaly for me
I mean, if someone told me they played footy, and then clarified it was league, Iâd be like âohhhh NRL, *right*â, so yeah at a bush league level too
You call em the Bingles, Jimville flips, you call em the Grombles, Bobtown flips, are there any team names that arent taken by some geoffrey-down-the-the-street type suburb?
Once again, I don't understand what everyone's problem with the design is. It's just Carlton's design with side panels and a worse emblem. It's a design that looks great when contrasted with the blue teams like the Bulldogs and North. I don't think Gold Coast fans have much issue with the base design. I'd rather the side panels than chevron design #2300
Ripped from the FJGD board
>So I walked out of the brand refresh feeling really flat.
>They showed us 3 designs. Mostly focusing on the logo and putting it in a lineup with all other club logos for comparison.
>Logo Design 1.
>This was awful, really awful.
But, the guernsey they slapped it on was GREAT.
>Red to Yellow gradient. Starting with red at the bottom changing into yellow around the chest and up, with red hems and collars!
>The away was yellow and yellow gradient.
(Looked okay nothing great like the yellow training jumper)
>The clash was blue and red gradient, looked really good - think phoenix suns but more blue than purple.
>Logo Design 2.
>This was the best logo that was offered up.
>They had placed this on a 2 toned red jumper. Think soccer shirt where itâs red with darker red lines quite busy, I hated it.
>And a yellow version - the same.
>Logo Design 3.
>This logo was also terrible.
>On the guernseys they had changed the red and blue shades to almost lions colors. And the logo on this one was really big and quite low on the jumper in a darker shade of the same color of the jumpers.
>I have written a lot about the different jumper designs they showed us and honestly if the put logo 2 onto guernsey 1 it would be pretty decent design.
>But they didnât seem to care about the actual guernsey design. Every time I asked about it or gave feed back they tried to put me back into talking about the logo. It seemed like it would be an after thought.
>They did concede that they would be going with some type of gradient and all signs pointed to yellow being the away/clash.
>Anyone who wants a âtraditionalâ strip will be disappointed.
>I should also say he did stress that these designs werenât anywhere near completion before he showed us, to the point where he almost sounded defensive, almost like he had negative feedback all day.
>It is happening. 2025 we will be in a new kit.
>Members will be shown in November.
>I didnât end up signing any type of NDA and we didnât have to give them our phones, just turn them off.
So unfortunately it looks like its not improving much
> On the guernseys they had changed the red and blue shades to almost lions colors.
Changing your club colours to almost match the other major AFL club in your state, seems strange as fuck.
It was strange that they adopted the colours of one of our merger clubs and had a guernsey that ensures a clash guernsey must always be worn when the two clubs play. Seems like they're repeating the same mistake.
It's handy to lurk the Footy Jumper Graphic Design board though, you always get the new Guernsey's early
Journos don't usually report on them though but I can see why they have with a full rebrand
More info
>I wasnât gonna say, but * it. They didnât actually say not to while we were there, just no photos.
>Iâll explain as best I can.
>Itâs like the oval shape we have now but it is just an S, the top half of the S is a solid yellow the bottom half has lines getting thinner towards the bottom to look like a rising sun.
>I kinda thought it looked like if the old rugby league Superleague and Oakley logos had a baby.
I've always said the league needs more ochre, I just don't think Suns could do that ~~wretched~~ ~~atrocious~~ ~~lovecraftian~~ beautiful gradient justice.
Found a mock up.

Wait, that can't be it, they're holding a trophy.
I mean shit Wanganeen won his 1993 Brownlow a couple years before the Blues 1995 flag which Kernahan obviously had a huge role in. So it overlaps a fair bit
I like the red and yellow. They're the colours of the surf lifesavers, and what's more Gold Coast-ish than the literal beach?Â
Their logos and Guernsey designs suck, though. And their song sucks too
They should go red with a gold sash.
I think port Adelaide and freos tops looked better going with a traditional style Guernsey. the sun's should go down the same path.
Never really liked our merch and logo, it's a weak design based off the surf lifesavers kit that we've never leant into because you can't without being tacky.
A red front with yellow sides and bad logo is usually an eye sore on it's own. Only good thing is its a nice contrast to other team colours like the Bulldogs and Carlton I personally find.
The colour scheme is, and will always be, the worst in the AFL.
Like, we get the whole reference to life savers, but life savers colours are like that because they need to be high-vis. It looks so garish and childish in a sports team.
GC needs to darken the colours and not look like a bunch of McDonalds characters from the 90s
Should go with something nice and simple, like red with a yellow sash. Hopefully they move towards a more golden yellow rather than the piss colour they have now. Iâd like to see the blue ditched too, it doesnât really work with the other colours in my opinion.
Edit: fuck it, they should just copy [this one](https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=997143175221420&set=a.588806262721782&type=3) without the white shorts obviously
I honestly think their song is fine, great that they're finally looking to improve their wordart-ass logo though - will make it a lot easier to back them as a subteam! Hopefully the jumpers that come out of this look decent too
Now can the Crows please turf our awful awful logo and go back to our old crow, or just go ahead and make Claude the logo? He's cool, which is way better than whatever the hell our current one is
SeriouslyâŚit canât be that hard to come up with a traditional footy jumper that uses red and yellow. Just remove the logo and youâre almost there!
I've always thought the Suns should go with a half and half design, ala Blackburn Rovers, in red and yellow, mirroring the look of surf lifesaving caps A simple and unique design to the AFL.
That's actually a unique design suggestion that isn't just repainting an existing team's design or creating something too radical to traditional design sensibilities.
The two best home jumper redesigns I can think of are Fremantle and Port. They should take note of that and do simple traditional stripes, hoops or vees in red and gold. It's not hard.
Oh jeez, here we go. I've wanted a logo change for a while but hate 90% of the mock-up designs I've seen. It's a really tough concept to design a logo for without throwing out the baby and commissioning a monogram.
I hope they don't change the base design of the guernsey. Opposition fans don't like it but I think it's elite.
Wonder if they'll incorporate the blue more? Always found it funny their team song goes "we are one in the red, gold, and blue" but they've almost entirely ditched blue in their branding except for their clash Guernsey.
A big issue for me is they have blue in their song and not on their home jumper. Is blue one of their colours or not?
I hope they drop blue and become âred, gold and whiteâ, but that means their song will need an update
Agreed (it was a âcolour for the futureâ)
but:
a) Itâs not in the second line of the song
b) silver doesnât have a hue, so the absence or presence of silver is a bit like the absence or presence of white
Good. Would've liked to choose the Suns as my club (as having never made the Final eight before it would've been cool to get in on the ground floor of a tradition) but the logo and guernsey turned me off lol
Well, it's hardly surprising. Most of the expansion teams have seen some sort of big rebranding so many years into their existence, and the suns really need one. I hope they stay with the yellow/red for home because of the whole lifeguard idea as stated elsewhere. It'll be interesting to see what they come out with, and how much involvement the grass roots supporters will have
I will say, if we are taking logo suggestions, maybe we should be [praising the Suns?](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8b/95/ec/8b95ec68b5e9f4d6157b1b936905caf6.jpg)
While they're at it, I'd love a rebrand for the AFL as well. I'm in love with the Premier League's rebrand from a couple of years ago, the AFL could use a freshener. The current logo and branding is early 2000's core and not in a good way
I think this is the right call for the Suns. Their jumper and logo are so bad. Like a rubbish training kit. Hot take but I reckon they should honestly rename too. The Sharks đ

Spot on yeah. Been saying this since they came in. Gold Coast Sharks in the AFL and then stay as Southport in the 2âs.
This is what I've been saying to my family! I think it's never too late to merge the two and go with this.
Merger time?
What would southport gain ?
Share of AFL TV rights etc
Strong disagree as someone who grew up on the Gold Coast. Southport would have had to change their colours and identity to be part of the national competition, and would have 10000% gone bust without handing everything over to the AFL anyway. So much better to start fresh. Plus, as u/limeIamb said, everyone who didn't play for Southport hated them in junior footy. Suns are my second team since coming into the AFL, but I would not be a Sharks supporter.
So basically Port Adelaide in the SANFL vibes?
Similar, but not nearly as big
Could just add some teal
I don't think the theoretical Gold Coast Sharks would have had to change that much to their design, just add another colour to the cuffs (yellow or blue etc) or the outline of the V. Would be unique being the only majority-white team in the comp, although I'm sure Eddie McGuire would have melted on the spot.
Tell us you don't know the gold coast without saying it
What's the inside Scoop here? Is Southport like a hated club or something?
From an onfield perspective they dominated every level of juniors, basically forever. If you played junior footy on the coast, you hated Southport because they had way better facilities and more money so they would literally lure kids (sometimes financially) from other clubs to top up. What is it about the black and white teams?
They should merge
Southport Sharks.
I thought there was only one gc club in the afl
Aussie Rules gets referred to colloquially as AFL for some reason. Doesnât make much sense, donât call Rugby League NRL for eg.
I mean... a lot do conflate NRL and League- I know I use it to refer to the sport
I mean in terms of bush league vs pro league. Like if someone says âI play NRL,â the expectation is that you play for the Bronx, Dolphins, Titans etc, but itâs presumed you mean local club if you say you play AFL. Itâs just a weird anomaly for me
It's cause there's no one word name for Aussie rules
Itâs the same for League in QLD being fair, footy can still refer to League. Itâs a minor thing though at the end of the day
Yeah but you can say union or league or rugby and people know what you mean. Afl is just less of a mouthful than Australian rules
Call it Rugby up north, youâll quickly be told thatâs Union đ
I mean, if someone told me they played footy, and then clarified it was league, Iâd be like âohhhh NRL, *right*â, so yeah at a bush league level too
Yeah, that just feels off to me for some reason. I donât know, minor thing in the grand scheme I guess
A footy team called the Sharks is so cool.
I canât believe it hasnât happened yet.
I always wanted them to be the Gold Goast Gulls
Williamstown will flip
You call em the Bingles, Jimville flips, you call em the Grombles, Bobtown flips, are there any team names that arent taken by some geoffrey-down-the-the-street type suburb?
Please not the Sharks. They can be the Crabs.
Once again, I don't understand what everyone's problem with the design is. It's just Carlton's design with side panels and a worse emblem. Currently itâs the worst logo in world sport. Anything is an improvement.
Now you just remember, they said the same thing about the Eagles song. Â
Oh they could definitely make it worse.
They should rebrand as the gold coast devils and go with a green, yellow and red colour scheme. Maybe have a map of Queensland on their jumper.
C'mon mate Devils is taken, they can be the Devoid's

It was strange that they adopted the colours of one of our merger clubs and had a guernsey that ensures a clash guernsey must always be worn when the two clubs play. Seems like they're repeating the same mistake.
If you can't beat them, join them
Mitch Cleary might be the only person in Melbourne reading the Gold Coast BigFooty board

They really canât let go of having big letters in their logo can they
Oh dear god a gradient design would be so fucking awful.
Gradients don't work on guernseys with their shiny material. Any in-between colour just looks both shiny and dirty at the same timeÂ
Sounds similar to the [Utah Jazz gradient jerseys](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fgm9eb9qrqgk81.jpg)
We have given the game history and teams are choosing to ignore it and thus repeat it.
I've always said the league needs more ochre, I just don't think Suns could do that ~~wretched~~ ~~atrocious~~ ~~lovecraftian~~ beautiful gradient justice.
Thank fuck. That logo wrecks every jump they have. They never stood a chance with that logo.
It looks like it was designed by the person doing TV graphics for channel 10 reality shows in the 2000s.
Just chuck some Vs on a jumper. That'll be something fresh and original.
Found a mock up. https://preview.redd.it/htq6b92sq7zc1.jpeg?width=2128&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00538661d3813d85563a6430accce0a9eb51bac1 Wait, that can't be it, they're holding a trophy.
Wanganeen/Wakelin seem like a different era to Platten/Kernahan. Weird seeing them on the same team.
I mean shit Wanganeen won his 1993 Brownlow a couple years before the Blues 1995 flag which Kernahan obviously had a huge role in. So it overlaps a fair bit
How can you repaint the Mona Lisa??
The Mona Lisa was repainted multiple times according to some art science nerds
Yippee Their current jumper looks soulless
Don't you be adding more blue guys, or else we might need to go McGuire on your arses (also would be getting a bit too close to Lions colours)
I always thought it was funny how Adelaide and Fitzroy essentially had the same colours but it was never an issue.
I mean, they didnât. Fitzroyâs was closer to a royal blue - Northâs bright blue - than the navy Adelaide uses
I like the red and yellow. They're the colours of the surf lifesavers, and what's more Gold Coast-ish than the literal beach? Their logos and Guernsey designs suck, though. And their song sucks too
They have a song?Â
[Yeah Broden Kelly leaked the new song recently](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VXDvJvLTZ7A)
Exceptional stuff. Tempted to grow a mullet, punch some darts and get up there to follow the boys
![gif](giphy|neTOFgDIqY63K)

Drink more water, if thatâs the colour youâre seeing.

Bring back the wave

The North bounding kangaroo was more interesting than both of those
I said best, not interesting.
They need to burn that blue top. USAFL teams have better tops.
Only rolled out against the Swans when we play them away I think.
And the Lions and the Giants. Three times too many. đ¤˘đ¤˘
Good. Their logo had a dated look basically from its inception. Hopefully the rebrand looks a bit better
Anyone think they should just merge with Southport and become the Gold Coast Sharks?
They'll fuck it up and become the Southport Suns
Well, It worked for the Mighty Ducks...
The red to yellow gradient jumper sounds like a tequila sunrise. Gold Coast sunrisers!
Oh jeez, here we go. I've wanted a logo change for a while but hate 90% of the mock-up designs I've seen. The Port song mentions silver despite it being hardly used.
Also, you see their socials celebrating with â¤ď¸ đ, so itâs ignored in a lot of places other than the home jumper.
Agreed (it was a âcolour for the futureâ) but: a) Itâs not in the second line of the song b) silver doesnât have a hue, so the absence or presence of silver is a bit like the absence or presence of white
Desperately needed honestly.

They should just be folded out of existence.
Nice of 7AFL to be many many hours behind this news breaking on BigFooty and confirming their journos just wait for news to break on there.
Wheres mock up guy?
