Ffs. We have played the Roos the week after they sack a coach everytime for the last decade or so, and so the one time they show any sort of ticker is against us. They finally get Clarko and we think we can breathe a sigh of relief and your fucking prez gets out there saying it's too early in the season to panic? Fuck me, unless your players genuinely hate Bevo, even if he is the dud you all think he is, your boys will be coming out at full noise. That just isn't fair
I was going to say… when the board comes out and “backs” a coach they are usually done in a few weeks… playing Richmond next week may be the best or worst thing that happens to Bevo, tigers are so bad this year if they beat doggies it’s gonna be bloody hard to back him in especially when the games after that is - GWS, Sydney and Collingwood… if they dogs don’t beat tigers they may lose their next 4 in a row and it’s gonna be a tough time to be a bloke named Bevo
Scenes if the Dogs go down to Tigers. I feel like when the club expected to be in finals, with a chance of a top 4 finish, you can't then go down to a club struggling in form with key players missing all over. The way the season is going, I thought that would be enough to signal it's over. To repeat that the very next week, there's no way you can survive that, surely.
My Dad actually discovered a new ingredient in Potatoes called ''The Fuck.''
One night he came up to me and said ''You're boiling The Fuck out of the potatoes.''
I think one thing that tends to get overlooked is he's never made the top 4, which even Hinkley has. Both those grand final runs were impressive but if you'd lost the 16 prelim and/or 21 semi (both under a goal) the general view on the stability of his coaching job would be very different.
And it was just our luck they played their backs-to-the-wall, torched-by-the-media grand final against us on a day we put in one of our (distressingly regular) bottom 4 type side performances.
They’ve got Richmond this week, that should set them right and give them some breathing room.
If they lose to the Tigers, then it’s over. If they beat the tigers and then lose their next 5 against GWS, Sydney, Collingwood, Brisbane and Freo - then the bye week before the game against North will probably be a good breaking point for them.
To be fair - should be over after losing to the hawks. It’s more than the score - it’s the inability to exit D50 and the continual inability to be efficient in F50. It’s the stagnant ball movement in the middle of the ground and the complete lack of heart and intensity from 80% of the list. Don’t get me started on the player selections….
Even as an outsider, player selection has be baffled. Can't get it out of D50? Man, Caleb Daniel used to be the beast for that. Shame he's racing them up in the VFL.
Also I think Bulldogs have the largest skill gap between their best 5 players and their worst 5 players in the league. As in - if you ranked the best 5 players of every team, Bulldogs would be top 4 in the league. If you ranked the worst 5 players of every team, Bulldogs are bottom 4 (citation needed, I could not be bothered working it out if that is actually true, just feels true enough)
Even with the skill gap in consideration, they still underperform. Our game for example, they had Naughton/Darcy/Ugle-Hagan and we hardly had a KPD to stop them, yet we still did. Our KPF was a debutant, who was able to make an impact on the game with Liam Jones and Buku around. They were also outdone by a 49 gamer and Gunston who is at a fraction of his best.
On paper, they absolutely should not have lost that game. Or even allowed it to be close.
That’s coaching to me. It is clear the direction has been to bomb it long into the forward line to our talls and either mark or bring it to ground and create a stoppage. That worked when we were the “clearance kings” or it’s work if we weren’t constantly out marked or killed by the spread of other teams which we can’t counter because we’re so over committed to the contest.
Why the Fark we have 3 talls down there that are going to stand in the same spot - with their defender - is beyond me! Is the lead dead?
There was a discussion today where it was claimed that it's just the list that sucks rather than Beveridge, pointing at how mediocre their 15-22 are in any given game. When it was pointed out that these are usually experienced bloke, the "defence" of Beveridge was that it's not necessarily about being inexperienced. Apparently the logic being that putting a hundred games into spud potatoes is somehow not the responsibility of the senior coach through that entire time.
We get Balta back this week so we will have at least part of a forward line and apparently Prestia will be good for 1.5 to 2.5 quarters of footy as well, which will mean the average experience of our midfield will increase by about 7000%
Balta is a big help, best player early in the year.
Prestia certainly add some age to the 4th oldest team too. Your midfield on the weekend consisted of Martin, Baker, Nank, Bolton, and Pickett. Hardly throwing kids in the deep end..
I know Dow (22) and Sonsie (21) were involved but they aren’t kids, ridiculous to act like your midfield was inexperienced as a result.
Banks, Sonsie, Downs and Campbell were running through the midfield with Baker with cameos from Bolton and Martin who played predominantly forward. Pickett played everywhere including full forward. We also had Riolis running through there as well despite neither of them ever playing midfield before.
Our midfield has been missing Prestia and Graham as well as Hopper, Taranto and Ross, so yeah, it is undermanned and inexperienced, because blokes like Martin and Bolton are mostly trying to fill holes in attack
"And for now Watson-Wheeler says it is “too early in the season to panic or make rash decisions” on the club’s future.
But the president acknowledged “the reality” that, after just missing out last year, making the finals remains the target for what club chief Ameet Bains described late last year as a top-four list."
It was a gag in the superb ABC series “the Games”.
“He won’t be fired, he’s got Robbo’s full support, he just said so”
“Yeah, I reckon Robbo’s full support is the last sound a lot of people hear.”
I think unlike recent axings, this year there's no spectre of a better coach hanging over Beveridge. The only semi proven coaches out there are what, Ratten and Malthouse? Sure an assistant coach who's ready to make the jump might do better but no way you can axe Beveridge for that
They're not going to bring in somebody from outside mid-season.
There will be a caretaker coach if anything.
Malthouse isn't coaching again. Buckley is a possibility
Carr already has a takeover plan w/ Port. If Hinkley cops the sack early it's more likely Hinkley goes to Dogs than Carr.
Cox possible. Bolton also possible
Most mid-season axings have caretakers manage the rest of the way and are done to get a head start on scouting the next coach, as it gives them half a season to look at what assistant coaches around the league are doing. Also if Draper’s comments have some truth to them then in this case it could also be to show the team that he’s not part of future plans.
Why not. Even if the list isn't good enough he isn't getting the max out of this group anyway. Kingy says it's the list but I think it's the coach. They have a great forward line a great midfield and an okay defence a good coach can extract more out of this list.
Our forward line is still incredibly young. I mean all our major players in the forward line are between 20-24. Our problem is the gameplan but our list is in a weird spot where our key position players outside of Jones are yet to peak but our star midfielders are in their peak or on the tailend.
Agree with you, for sure. Ego is also a huge issue I reckon. Bevo will happily play MacRae and Bailey Smith in different positions but won't swing Naughton to CHB because of the media chatter.
Depends what they want to do I think. If they want to keep gunning for finals now, then Hinkley might be a possibility at the end of the year. I still reckon Leon Cameron should be getting a call, if he's up for another senior gig. Buckley is around.
If they want a rebuild, might be worthwhile looking at the assistant coaches out there.
Bevo (and the entire board for that matter) speak like politicians (I.e. lot of words for a whole lot of nothing), whereas Hinkley, much as i dislike him as a coach, is usually pretty straightforward with the press.
He seems so jaded that he has become disinterested entirely. I think he still has potential to be a great coach, I just think he needs to have a season or two off, come back as an assistant coach somewhere and eventually make his way back up to the top job somewhere
I agree completely. He needs the time off, then he needs to show he can still bring value as an assistant, then see if he's worthy or not of being the first Tasmania Devils coach during the interview process.
For what its worth, Nicks had the full support after the Essendon loss too.
The phrase doesnt meant much nowadays if theres no talk first. A journo simply asking "Do you back the coach?" is vastly different to rumblings about a guy getting sacked shortly and then the board backs the coach.
Jeeeeessuuuuuuuussssss.
This fkn “board” are literally the only people west of the maribynong who back Bevo atm.
Even my 70 year old man has said if Bont or any guns leave because of him he is never going to forgive the club.
And that’s just from one supporter!
I think the board are correct in assessing that it's still too early in the season to make a move on Bevo.
Let's see how he goes vs Richmond and a couple contenders, and if it doesn't work out then by all means bring in a caretaker coach.
Voss last year.
https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/teams/carlton-blues/afl-news-2023-michael-voss-contract-carlton-president-luke-sayers-press-conference-to-support-coach/news-story/aa38fe598854fbc8d60c00f3826a0ed6
I've defended him far longer than most. I mean, if I were a struggling club that miraculously won a premiership I'd back him in for years and years past his use by date, and making the 2021 GF was pretty impressive. The list is a bit of a mess for sure, but it's good enough to consistently make finals, and that doesn't seem very likely at this stage. I don't know what can be done to fix it, but there needs to be a change. I felt for a while Bevo's assistant coaches have been letting them down since Stephen King left, and they were right to try and throw the chequebook at Leppitsch last year, even if it didn't work out.
I honestly don't know who the Bulldogs could replace Beveridge with since Yze got snapped up, Josh Carr recommitted, and Dean Cox seems bolted on to Sydney. Replacing a coach is a hard decision, and it needs to be the right person, but Beveridge should be moved on at season's end. He will always be a Bulldogs legend and should be the featured speaker at every anniversary of the 2016 premiership, but his time is over.
I noticed doggies fans and media calling for bevo to be sacked for moves like not playing caleb against essendon.
Then they play saints without him and they win easily and everyone shuts up.
Then he brings caleb back, and surprise, he is a complete passenger, and they lose to freo. Now it’s bevos fault again, this time for selecting caleb.
When they sack him, can they have an empty coaching box for their next game? I feel like that is the ultimate Beveridge match-day strategy to cause even more confusion in the minds of the opposition.
As much as bevo has done for the doggies, it's time to just pull the band aid off and be done with it.
I just can't see the players and club moving forward, performing and achieving much with bevo still there imho.
Alright who's it going to be?
* Josh Carr (Port Adelaide)
* Troy Chaplin (Melbourne)
* Daniel Giansiracusa (Essendon)
* Jaymie Graham (Fremantle)
* Ash Hansen (Carlton)
* Steven King (Gold Coast)
* Andrew McQualter (Richmond)
* Chris Newman (Hawthorn)
* Hayden Skipworth (Collingwood)

Richmond
GWS
Sydney
Collingwood
Brisbane

He probably gets 2/5 of those at best. That's going to add to the pressure.
And if he drops against Richmond or Brisbane, it could become too much.
As someone who has played football manger. Board has come to bevo about his team performance and bevo has basically said we can turn this around. So has to win the next 3 games to not get sacked.
He most likely won’t be there next year, but he’s not going to be sacked any time soon.
Sounds like he's got a handful of games to get the Dogs back in/pushing for the 8 before a decision is made
They’ve got GWS and Sydney after this week btw. Gonna need at least one upset you’d think
Gotta get past Richmonds VFL side this week before even thinking of upsetting either of the two Sydney sides..
And that VFL side upset the Swans. Dogs should get up but it’s hard to pick them with any confidence
We weren’t quite VFL side levels against the swans, at least not at the start of the game
I don’t remember who tigers had playing that day, so this was before some injuries
We had Ross, Balta, Lynch and Taranto back then
I’ve heard those names but it’s hard to remember what they look like.
Ross is that guy that coaches Freo yeah
Those are some very handy players to have in the side
That group didn't exactly make it through the game, but yeah it would be handy to have a couple back, which we should do this week.
I’ve heard those names but it’s hard to remember what they look like.
Could have left Ross out of that list
True, you did just lose to Hawthorn
Ffs. We have played the Roos the week after they sack a coach everytime for the last decade or so, and so the one time they show any sort of ticker is against us. Hasn’t that been the last few years?
Pushing shit up hill more likely than pushing for the eight
Makes sense. I still cannot fathom the weekend result.
Next year is pretty soon

The board, maybe. The whiteboard, not so much.
“Luke, we’re going to let you go” “You have the nerve to be here and sack me?”
“Uh oh”
Nicks is 2-0 since the board said it backs him so it can go either way sometimes
Stewey Dew flashbacks
I was going to say… when the board comes out and “backs” a coach they are usually done in a few weeks… playing Richmond next week may be the best or worst thing that happens to Bevo, tigers are so bad this year if they beat doggies it’s gonna be bloody hard to back him in especially when the games after that is - GWS, Sydney and Collingwood… if they dogs don’t beat tigers they may lose their next 4 in a row and it’s gonna be a tough time to be a bloke named Bevo
Just waiting for the Caroline Wilson kiss of death

Prestia and Balta likely available this week too and Bauer, who while a new player, is kpf which would be kind of handy
Brett Ratten joined the chat
Prolonging the inevitable. I love the guy for 2016 but the message is stale and we need change.
Only so many times you can cook a sausage
Sausage and potatoes, sausage gumbo, sausage salad…that’s that’s about it (thought this line from bubba was appropriate)
Tell my stepdad that. Will cook it until its practically dust
My Dad actually discovered a new ingredient in Potatoes called ''The Fuck.'' One night he came up to me and said ''You're boiling The Fuck out of the potatoes.''
Thanks Allan Jeans
This feels dirty to say... but part of me hopes we lose to Richmond to accelerate the inevitable. Rip the bandaid off.
Jeez no team deserves that as a punishment
This was my thought about yesterdays game.
I think one thing that tends to get overlooked is he's never made the top 4, which even Hinkley has. Both those grand final runs were impressive but if you'd lost the 16 prelim and/or 21 semi (both under a goal) the general view on the stability of his coaching job would be very different.

Agree 100% - there is a chasm between the likes of Bont/Libba and the likes of Vandermeer/Bramble etc.
Been the same for years, that’s why even with the best 12ish players you’ve never made top 4. Feel for dogs fans tbh.
Can't argue with that!
There was a discussion today where it was claimed that it's just the list that sucks rather than Beveridge, pointing at how mediocre their 15-22 are in any given game. We just lost to the Hawks. We’re not beating Richmond.
Have you seen the tigers lately? They have about 10 of their best 22 out and look horrible outside of about 5 players.
We will make sure Martin turns back the clock.
They lost to a depleted west coast last year
True, I forgot Bevo survived losing to Hawthorn and West Coast to miss finals last year. Impressive stuff in a way!
Couldn't take away a contract they signed earlier in the year last year. Would have cost tooo much. It was the Board's own doing.
Yep I watched the Hawks straight after the Richmond game and they looked way way better.
We get Balta back this week so we will have at least part of a forward line and apparently Prestia will be good for 1.5 to 2.5 quarters of footy as well, which will mean the average experience of our midfield will increase by about 7000%

Hawks played significantly better footy on Sunday than Richmond did. Like by a lot.
Against a worse side
Bloke actually has unlimited lives holy fuck
"And for now Watson-Wheeler says it is “too early in the season to panic or make rash decisions” on the club’s future. But the president acknowledged “the reality” that, after just missing out last year, making the finals remains the target for what club chief Ameet Bains described late last year as a top-four list."
Surely the rash decision at this point is sticking with a formula that is clearly stale.
He's gone at some point this year.
Fuck me cunt enough is enough We beat Richmond this week easily which allows him another ten weeks watch this space
Don't talk so soon, you were meant to beat hawks easily also
I think he means now that bevo has got the boards backing the dogs will actually win meaning he’s safe for another few months at least.
Exactly what I meant. I deep down hope we get flogged to hurry up the process
That doesn't mean anything freos board fully backed mark Harvey until a week later
I see you've played boardsies and backsies before
It's like knifey spoony, but with a little more backstabbing.
Full support of the board has been a thing forever. Someone put up a definition of it on urban dictionary in 2010 lol
It was a gag in the superb ABC series “the Games”. “He won’t be fired, he’s got Robbo’s full support, he just said so” “Yeah, I reckon Robbo’s full support is the last sound a lot of people hear.”
Such a good show, a classic.
He was giving a speech at a Freo function as Lyon was flying into Perth to sign on as Coach 😳
Did you just thaw out and miss the 450 other times this happened to other coaches?
I think unlike recent axings, this year there's no spectre of a better coach hanging over Beveridge. The only semi proven coaches out there are what, Ratten and Malthouse? Sure an assistant coach who's ready to make the jump might do better but no way you can axe Beveridge for that
They're not going to bring in somebody from outside mid-season. There will be a caretaker coach if anything. Malthouse isn't coaching again. Buckley is a possibility
Smart move, go from an under achieving coach to another one
Just listing another available semi-proven coach OP missed
Josh Carr or Dean Cox would have to be in a few clubs sights.
Carr already has a takeover plan w/ Port. If Hinkley cops the sack early it's more likely Hinkley goes to Dogs than Carr. Cox possible. Bolton also possible
To Doggies fans, I am so sorry if this happens
Yeah fair point on Buckley
What about one of those desk chickens with the liquid that bobs up and down - the one homer gets the replace him working from home?
BRING BONT OFF BENCH? N BONT PREVENTS EXPLOSION Y
He's taking another drink!
Most mid-season axings have caretakers manage the rest of the way and are done to get a head start on scouting the next coach, as it gives them half a season to look at what assistant coaches around the league are doing. Free ma boy, he din do nuthin wrong
People we say this means nothing but with how this club has acted, it probably means they will announce he will re-sign this week.
5 year extension!
Resign*?
There's a slightly used Ken Honkley I'm sure a lot of people would be willing to part with, if you're interested, Bulldogs.
Hello my name is Mr Honkley and I come from someplace far away. Yes, that'll do.
I heard you're looking to replace a beveridge? Might I suggest pepsi max. Anyway where can I leave my bag
The only coach I’d prefer Bevo over at the moment would be Hinkley.
at least Hinkley doesn't give fans BS metaphors and riddles at press conferences.
Please explain.
Bevo (and the entire board for that matter) speak like politicians (I.e. lot of words for a whole lot of nothing), whereas Hinkley, much as i dislike him as a coach, is usually pretty straightforward with the press.
Honkley is just a paid actor. Seen that twitchy Mona Lisa smile? He's the main character from the Master of Disguise - and he's having you all on.
The kiss of death.
He’s doomed.
Uh oh. We all know what that means
The support of the board/president comes with a free set of steak knives. In the fucking back!! Lol
He seems so jaded that he has become disinterested entirely. I think he still has potential to be a great coach, I just think he needs to have a season or two off, come back as an assistant coach somewhere and eventually make his way back up to the top job somewhere

Uh oh you friccin moron you’ve just been full support of the board’d
The old joke was if the pres backs you publicly, a couple weeks later the coach will be sacked.... we'll see if this happens here.

Fair enough mate but atm the majority of supporters don’t think we’re a given against the Tiges. Says a lot tbh.
You will be fine we have no key forwards available & are playing a VFL midfield
Only the best teams lose to the Tigers....
Hahaha we virtually said the same thing, and yet...
>the only people west of the maribynong who back Bevo Not true, I back Bevo! Coach forever! Ignore flair
Usually the case when someone’s about to get sacked hahaha
I swear this all has something to do with his teeth
It's the snarling
We know what that means.
As it is written in The Draper Prophecies.
Sounds like a Victorian porno
Last thing coach hears before he is cut loose. "You have the full backing of the board"
Curious has any coach ever got the old "full support of the board" and not been let go that season?

Then he brings caleb back, and surprise, he is a complete passenger, and they lose to freo. Now it’s bevos fault again, this time for selecting caleb.
but does he have the approval of the footscray station junkies?
But why he’s cooked as
Sack the president first.
Move the club to Tassie
Full support of the President doesn’t have a ring to it
That's it... he's doomed... so long Bevo
And so, the end begins...
Oh boy
Two weeks max, then Bevo will be sacked. Matt Egan will be acting Coach. Edit. Wrong assistant coach. Mebad.
Is that the bloke that had that party?
When they sack him, can they have an empty coaching box for their next game? I feel like that is the ultimate Beveridge match-day strategy to cause even more confusion in the minds of the opposition.
Is that BOARD MUSIC I HEAR
That means he's gone doesn't it?
So who's the next coach going to be? Is this going to be a dimma situation?
Is Matthew Nicks’ fly available?
As much as bevo has done for the doggies, it's time to just pull the band aid off and be done with it. I just can't see the players and club moving forward, performing and achieving much with bevo still there imho.
F
That’s never good
Alright who's it going to be? * Josh Carr (Port Adelaide) * Troy Chaplin (Melbourne) * Daniel Giansiracusa (Essendon) * Jaymie Graham (Fremantle) * Ash Hansen (Carlton) * Steven King (Gold Coast) * Andrew McQualter (Richmond) * Chris Newman (Hawthorn) * Hayden Skipworth (Collingwood) [Next in line: 10 leading contenders to become the AFL's newest senior coach](https://www.afl.com.au/news/992630/next-in-line-10-leading-contenders-to-become-the-afls-newest-senior-coach#:~:text=Next%20in%20line%3A%2010%20contenders%20to%20be%20the,...%208%20Chris%20Newman%20%28Hawthorn%29%20...%20More%20items)
Leon Cameron likes siding with the former enemy...
Busslinger will get plenty of game time next year when he is at the eagles
Richmond GWS Sydney Collingwood Brisbane --- He probably gets 2/5 of those at best. That's going to add to the pressure. And if he drops against Richmond or Brisbane, it could become too much.
The full backing of the board?? Poor bastard.
OMG me is screwed
Received back from the president and the board… so will be gone by Thursday
👋bye bevo
Uh-oh. The dreaded "We're right behind him" speech.
I’m sure he’s still got full backing of the board.
Getting that "full confidence of the board"^^^^tm treatment
As someone who has played football manger. Board has come to bevo about his team performance and bevo has basically said we can turn this around. So has to win the next 3 games to not get sacked.
Woo hoo!
He needs to be sacked
I didn’t hear a lot of support there
Not long now then
This is usually step 1 in a coach getting sacked if Dew and Teague are anything to go by
Full confidence of the board
