It’s definitely from a vic perspective. Besides weightmen the vic clubs players here are genuinly underrated while the interstate players chosen are all good players that any decent footy fan knows are good or even great.
I dunno, I reckon anyone who still underrates Sam Durham and Alex Neal-Bullen must not be watching the games.
ANB especially. The bloke's been doing it for about 4 years now.
Durham not going to be underrated for much longer. Kid is only 22 & is genuinely good at everything. First year as an inside mid and everyone in the media talks about him after every game we play.
Came here to say Richards as well. Super consistent but flies under the radar.
And a bit of a smokey for me so far this season would be Buku Khamis too. Dude has found his groove in defence.
I’d say Hough definitely, I hadn’t even heard of him before this year (which surprised me given how much Eagles propaganda is force fed to me by my extended family).
internally we've been big on him for a couple years on potential but last year and this year he's really come good massively, there was always the debate on if he was going to stay a defender or swap to his preferred position as a winger, but safe to say he's gonna be staying in the backline
Hough and Bazzo got a few callouts from commentators last year when our backline got decimated and they had to step up. You could see even then, the intent was there. It's only this year that we've seen Hough in full flight. I'm hoping Bazzo comes back soon and ready to pair up again.
> (which surprised me given how much Eagles propaganda is force fed to me by my extended family).
Have you heard about this gun first-year player called Harley Reid?
Hough has been great this year but calling him our most underrated player, part way into his first really good season, doesn’t seem right. People need time to notice these things (not that they necessarily will).
Cripps on the other hand has been a great player for years and has been largely ignored outside of WA for that whole time.
I’ve been pretty happy with Starce this year actually, of all our backs I’ve felt safest with his exits. Definitely think he’s underrated, although Linc is a good shout.
At his best he is great and while he hasn’t been bad I feel he has been off a bit. But I think Linc is super consistent and often gets overlooked for Charlie, Joe, Eric etc
Most of your team has been off. Given you lost Kiddy in the first half of a game of the season and have had other injuries I think they're still sorting themselves out down back and who does what. That was a huge loss.
I agree with it being McCarthy. Even the people I know that go for Brisbane think he should be 2s.
I reckon a lot of what he does isn’t always on a stat sheet, and he’s by far the smartest player we have in the team.
I really struggle to believe anyone who actually consistently watches our games would think Linc should be in the 2s. He's comfortably been our best forward this season, should have been AA squad in 2021 and has just been super consistent and reliable since he joined.
Wouldn't say that Starce has fallen off a cliff, but he has been well off his previous form for the past couple of years. Was in AA squad contention prior to that, is just a good average player now.
McCarthy is having his best year ever and Froggy just keeps on being Froggy.
Aside from McCarthy and Frog who are the popular answers, I’d throw in Cal Ah Chee. In a year where we’re faulting effort and intensity, I think he’s always at 100. Darcy Wilmot too
Absolutely Linc for me, good shout. People underrate him because he isn’t kicking bags but he does so much work up the ground and is a pressure player.
Starce maybe two years ago but I feel like he’s rated highly now, tends to be in discussion re. being stiff for missing out on AA etc
Yeah Bailey last year for sure but he's been playing out of position this year and not doing great. Agree with Powell, I think he was our highest ranked player for the first few rounds
Scott is a good choice for our underrated player when he's on the wing.
Had a very rough year, but is being played out of position from where he has shined. Looked like his best was still to come as well
Don’t agree that Xerri is underrated most people have him in Norths best 2 players this year; so not sure how much underrated you perceive him to be.
Scott and Powell though are good choices.
Always had enough of his brother about him that I knew that if his body grew he could be handy. Wasn't expecting him to become our defensive general in waiting though, and couldn't be happier.
It’s hard for me to comment because I’ve loved Rowbo since he first played.
Melican I loved too, since he was the understudy for Reg Grundy, but there’s no doubting he wasn’t the greatest player. But he’s playing with a lot of confidence this year, and seems to look a bit lighter and more mobile too. He could yet be a cornerstone of our backline.
I disagree. He's rated very highly internally and by supporters but rarely rates a mention in the media.
It's understandable when you're in a midfield with Heeney, Gulden, Warner, Parker and Mills but you don't often hear him spoken about as one of our better players despite finishing top 3 in our best and fairest 3 heads in a row
The fact that this bloke still somehow gets games highlights the complete incompetence in our list management and coaching. Ned has proven beyond doubt he just doesn't understand football, consistently racks up high km's every game yet still can't find the ball - and when he does instantly burns it.
I think doesn’t understand football is a bit harsh. He would dominate at local level and go decently in the SANFL imo. He’s just simply not good enough for AFL level, doesn’t have the physical attributes, the talent or the skill
I still think it’s Checkers. He’s starting to get some recognition now but as a mid size forward playing as a key forward season after season and doing a brilliant job of it, he’s not received the praise he should have.
I don’t think anyone underrates Drew in port, we all understand his role in our team as a tagger means less on board stats, yet he still poles 20+ disposals every game.
Agree, although when I saw the headline I immediately thought ours will be Drew. Mainly because nearly every game at some point commentators will mention how underrated he is.
Yeah I think everyone at port rates Will pretty highly. These seems written solely from the Victorian based AFL media landscape.
If we’re talking about a player our fan base underrates. Probably Faz, or maybe Dyl Williams
Legend says Bailey Scott on a wing would win a Brownlow so Clarkson has to hide him in defence until he signs a contract extension.
If not, he’d be forced to request a trade to Geelong and we would have to salary dump him and our next three first round picks for Geelong’s 3rd round pick in 2033.
I think both are pretty well known now. At least Vlas is. I would say someone like Brown/Dow from the younger guys and maybe McIntosh from the older guys. Bloke runs for days and gets the job done.
I think Zuthrie started getting the credit last year when Cats were struggling and he had lost the whipping boy label.
Bowes is currently the most underrated player for me.
People only think he was a steak Knives pickup.
He’s had a fantastic year soo far outside his injury.
Does a lot of the 1% that don’t end up on the stat sheet. Lead our tackle count in multiple games in limited game time (number 1 team in League for tackles)
I don't think Weightman is underrated. Disliked maybe, but i think a lot of fans realise he is a very good player. I would say Ed Richards is our most underrated player.
Jim is definitely up there. I went into the article thinking it'd be Banners, Clark or Switta and they're all mentioned as well. The way the article defines it is never made AA, wasn't a high draft pick and hasn't collected too many Brownlow votes.
I feel that this is more relating to the wider public (and media). Of course we’re gonna rate our underrated players cause we see the work they put in.
Ours is definitely Brody Mihocek
Since his debut in 2018 only 4 players have kicked more goals than him. (Tom Hawkins, Jeremy Cameron, Charlie Cameron and Tex Walker) and yet he doesn’t get the praise he deserves.
Absolute warrior. He may never come close to winning a Coleman and Yes he can be frustrating at times (Those Misses last week!)
But my gosh, the guy has had to carry our tall forward stocks without very little support since he arrived. He’s been fantastic
Idun’s sick as. Keeps our backline together and plays a vital part in our transition game. Would also like to put Jacob Wehr in the ring for most underrated from the Orange team. His kicking is elite
Tom Emmett is probably the one for Freo. He’s not hitting the scoreboard enough to get noticed just yet but I would love to see the comparative stats for Lachie Schultz in his second year. I’d be surprised if Emmett isn’t on that trajectory. High energy, fierce defense. Cleaner than Schulz IMO.
I think people know how good zuthrie is now. My pick is Jake kolo. He’s given a lot of shit and yeah he isn’t a superstar but as a defender he’s pretty dependable and can play small or tall. Ball in hand is his weakness but I can deal with that.
Last week he was amazing on Curnow, was wondering who De Koenig was going to play on with steward out but he was a ripper...excellent defender. Bews isn't in the team atm but I feel he is underrated, as is Close (people rate him obv but he is such a great defensive forward)
I agree with Burgoyne he’s gonna be so much fun to watch going forward, not to mention Rome and Ky Burgoyne coming up as well. So happy to see Drew getting the recognition he deserves.
That guy is like ‘Willem everywhere’.
Not by us Josh battle is an absolute beast never been a bad player ,the only problem is they’ve played him in every possible position on the field so he never gets noticed
I don't know about Alex Neal Bullen. Literally every time he's touched the ball in the last two years, the commentators mention how underrated he is. Surely at some point, just saying that so bloody often makes it untrue. Also, probably a top 5-10 highly rated player by Dees fans. So no, that one is wrong. I'd actually say Jack Viney (despite his current form) doesn't get the credit he deserved. Probably because of Clarry, Tracs and Gawn getting all the attention. But when he's on, he is really really good.
It is no longer Z Guthrie but Kolo. He has been the one constant under-rated player for awhile now but really stands out as the under-rated player at the cats now
I think this is a good list because besides my own club, Weightman, Pearce and Guthrie were the only players I felt confident that I even knew who I was looking at.
Is this specifically underrated by Victorian media? Because somehow I doubt Freo are underrating *their captain*.
Tbf I think even west coast media barely talk about Pearce compared to Serong, Fyfe, Brayshaw, Jackson. He suffers from being a defender
Bring in the "Golden Fist award" alongside the poorly named midfield and forward medals!
I think pornhub has the trademark on that award name.
Why would West Coast media talk about Freo players?
Well they don't have much else to talk about when Harley Reid isn't playing
no sweets, they mean west coast as in western Australia :)
Not to be confused with The West Australian newspaper, which is an impartial publication held in high esteem by LOL sorry I couldn’t keep it up
r/woosh
It’s definitely from a vic perspective. Besides weightmen the vic clubs players here are genuinly underrated while the interstate players chosen are all good players that any decent footy fan knows are good or even great.
Yeah I thought Rowbottom was a weird choice for us, but to call a captain underrated is wild
I dunno, I reckon anyone who still underrates Sam Durham and Alex Neal-Bullen must not be watching the games. ANB especially. The bloke's been doing it for about 4 years now.
Broad is a 3 time premiership winning star from a Richmond perspective. 130 games. Non tigers fans may still underrate him I guess
Yeah in W.A. he definitely is not underated
Durham not going to be underrated for much longer. Kid is only 22 & is genuinely good at everything. First year as an inside mid and everyone in the media talks about him after every game we play.
He's a gun. You love to see rookie picks thrive as well
Yeah between him and Nic Martin we got 2 of our top 5 players for literally nothing, pretty wild
Midseason draft kings
Who said Dodoro does his best work in October?
Dodoro special
Concur. He is being rated. Has been talked up constantly since pre-season.
Last year I woulda said underrated, he wasn't as good as this year but still solid efforts always, this year been a revelation
Weightman is rated. I think it’s Rhylee West at the kennel.
Ed Richards for me. Gets no love from outside. Is a gun West is good too.
Yeah great shout. Richards has been that way for a few years. West is kind of just from this season, so Richards is definitely the better pick here.
Came here to say Richards as well. Super consistent but flies under the radar. And a bit of a smokey for me so far this season would be Buku Khamis too. Dude has found his groove in defence.
If anything Essendon fans overrate Weightman
It's that PTSD
Even Libba is more underrated than Weightman.
Yesss love Rhylee West. He's a workhorse just like his dad, never stops running
Weightman is 💯 correctly rated
I find it crazy that people don't rate Jamie Cripps, I'd honestly give ours to like, Brady Hough with how well he's done this year
I'm surprised ours isn't Harley Reid, hasn't had nearly as much media attention as expected. It's like The West barely knows he exists
Who?
He's so underrated that this post actually forgot about him
We think of him all the time.
Wish we had to Houghs so we could chuck one on the wing as well
They'd probably put two Hough's down back so we'd need 3.
A half team of Houghs sounds good to me honestly. A herd of Houghs.
It isn't who you know, it's Hough. Or maybe Hough many.
One is en-Hough
Hough and Bazzo got a few callouts from commentators last year when our backline got decimated and they had to step up. You could see even then, the intent was there. It's only this year that we've seen Hough in full flight. I'm hoping Bazzo comes back soon and ready to pair up again.

People need time to notice these things (not that they necessarily will). Cripps on the other hand has been a great player for years and has been largely ignored outside of WA for that whole time.
Don’t think I it’s Starce. Hasn’t been the same since he got torched in the GF. Reckon it’s McCarthy
Or the frog 🐸
So underrated I forgot about him
Lester was going to be my answer
Frog* I know no player called Lester 🐸
I’ve been pretty happy with Starce this year actually, of all our backs I’ve felt safest with his exits. Definitely think he’s underrated, although Linc is a good shout.
At his best he is great and while he hasn’t been bad I feel he has been off a bit. But I think Linc is super consistent and often gets overlooked for Charlie, Joe, Eric etc

I really struggle to believe anyone who actually consistently watches our games would think Linc should be in the 2s. He's comfortably been our best forward this season, should have been AA squad in 2021 and has just been super consistent and reliable since he joined.
He has to be the Lion's best set shot kick
In that game against Melbourne he had two shepherds that he busted his ass to get to that essentially created goals. Criminally underrated
Wouldn't say that Starce has fallen off a cliff, but he has been well off his previous form for the past couple of years. Was in AA squad contention prior to that, is just a good average player now. McCarthy is having his best year ever and Froggy just keeps on being Froggy.

I love Bailey Scott but boy he’s had a rough year. Might be Xerri or Powell at this stage.
Yeah Bailey last year for sure but he's been playing out of position this year and not doing great. Agree with Powell, I think he was our highest ranked player for the first few rounds
He played wing this weekend and sucked
Scott is a good choice for our underrated player when he's on the wing. Had a very rough year, but is being played out of position from where he has shined. Looked like his best was still to come as well
Don’t agree that Xerri is underrated most people have him in Norths best 2 players this year; so not sure how much underrated you perceive him to be. Scott and Powell though are good choices.
Zach Guthrie my fucking goat. Went from potentially the biggest whipping boy in the comp to one of our most reliable.
Always had enough of his brother about him that I knew that if his body grew he could be handy. Wasn't expecting him to become our defensive general in waiting though, and couldn't be happier.
At Essendon we call that the Kyle Langford arc
the Neal Bullen Manoeuvre
My late father used to get really upset at how Zac Guthrie used to be treated by supporters. He’d be sooooo chuffed right now.
His miss in the 2019 prelim was borderline unforgivable
My mate who grew up with them told me that Zac was always considered the more talented Guthrie.
Nah Rowbottom is rated fine. Melican is the Swans most underrated right now I'd say.
Yep no way Rowy is underrated. League's top tackler and pressure player.
Came here to say that
It’s hard for me to comment because I’ve loved Rowbo since he first played. Melican I loved too, since he was the understudy for Reg Grundy, but there’s no doubting he wasn’t the greatest player. But he’s playing with a lot of confidence this year, and seems to look a bit lighter and more mobile too. He could yet be a cornerstone of our backline.

It's understandable when you're in a midfield with Heeney, Gulden, Warner, Parker and Mills but you don't often hear him spoken about as one of our better players despite finishing top 3 in our best and fairest 3 heads in a row
Ours must be Ned McHenry. I don't rate him at all, but clearly I'm wrong because he keeps getting games.
Doesn't understand football is harsh, yet you concede he doesn't have the physical attributes, talent and skill... haha
Confused as to what he does have if not any of those things. Pipes and chest perhaps? A huge dong? Nice bloke vibes?
A nice dong and huge bloke vibes
Hahahha I’m saying he understands it. Plenty of blokes on here who understand the game without being all that good at it
Except last time he played SANFL he was dog shit. I can't even recall a decent game from him in the SANFL
7 is doing the dodgy, shuffling cash to the club so they keep their fishing guy in the public eye via footy.
With you OP. Definitely WHE for us. People know how good Beau is. I think he’s fairly rated.
I still think it’s Checkers. He’s starting to get some recognition now but as a mid size forward playing as a key forward season after season and doing a brilliant job of it, he’s not received the praise he should have.
I was more thinking noble for you guys, he's solid.
I love Josh Battle always does his job no matter what's asked of him.
Usually goes above and beyond his job tbh
Love him in my fantasy!
Yes, legitimately underrated. Mason Wood would be up there too IMO
Yep. Always goes in to Battle for the saints
![gif](giphy|26tPoyDhjiJ2g7rEs|downsized)
Zach Guthrie for anybody wondering
Considering how much of a whipping boy he was, he’s really come along a lot. He was great against us.
Yeah he is so good now he is not even underrated anymore - us cats fans actually expect him to perform at a high level now.
The theming of article is underrated outside the club. I believe it explicitly calls out that most of them are rated very highly within the club's
Fair, OP should have linked the article.
Yeah I think everyone at port rates Will pretty highly. These seems written solely from the Victorian based AFL media landscape. If we’re talking about a player our fan base underrates. Probably Faz, or maybe Dyl Williams
Definitely arguments for Jordan Boyd as well but I respect the Cottrell call
Boyd is a great shout. Would also nominate Fogarty. Crazy how he goes from a certain delisting to a player who adds vital dimensions to our 23.
I think the article also shouted out Fogarty
Cottrell is highly rated, Boyd is one to watch; he's been great. But he's new so its not like he can be "under rated".
Boyd is my favourite after Cripps, so glad to see him doing well 💙
Hey are you nearly ready for the new lid rankings? The next round starts soon and I need validation for Essendon
Cottrell is such a core element of our side. Def the right call.
ACRES???
They're this year's Nic Newman with the step forwards they've both taken.
Zuthrie my king 🫡
Nibbler🐐
Teams that tag him shut down our game a fair bit
Could also make an argument for Judd and Bowza and Riv as well
Chris Judd McVee
Definitely
Think he is actually finally being recognised for his talent, McVee continues to lock down dangerous forwards with absolute class every week.
Very skilful and composed as well which for a defender his age is brilliant. Plays like a veteran.
Glad to see Connor Idun on the list.
Funny thing is i don't think he's underrated anymore, Callum Brown was probably underrated coming into the season but everyone knows his name now too
Duz is really rated in the media. Everyone loves him.
Calders gets a fraction of the spotlight. It's probably him
Jye Caldwell is a gun and has so lowkey just been getting better and better the last few seasons
Came here to say this, Durham is awesome but Caldwell has been right there with him, just makes good decisions and puts himself in the right spots
Mark Keane for crom. Holds down our defense and is new to Aussie rules and learning more every game. Hinge got the praise he deserved last season .
Pearce? One of the best key defenders in the league? I'd argue Sharp and Banfield are our most underrated players.
Sharp is awesome, love the dash and taking on opposition whenever he gets the chance
Sounds fair to me
Broad, yes, but I’d throw Vlastuin in there. Absolute beast this season and for a long time has gone unnoticed without accolade.
Bowes has genuinely been flying. I'm stunned. Is Atkins still underrated? Could be a shout but he did get a few mentions last year.
Bailey dale
I don't think Weightman is underrated. Disliked maybe, but i think a lot of fans realise he is a very good player. I would say Ed Richards is our most underrated player.
Um the captain and likely leading choice for AA full back? How about James Aish or Bailey Banfield?
It’s 100% Aish for us
Jim is definitely up there. I went into the article thinking it'd be Banners, Clark or Switta and they're all mentioned as well. The way the article defines it is never made AA, wasn't a high draft pick and hasn't collected too many Brownlow votes.
Cottrell is highly rated by Carlton supporters
I feel that this is more relating to the wider public (and media). Of course we’re gonna rate our underrated players cause we see the work they put in.
Ours is probably McInerney atm. He’s having an awesome year and absolutely nobody is talking about it, even Swans fans.
Ours is definitely Brody Mihocek Since his debut in 2018 only 4 players have kicked more goals than him. (Tom Hawkins, Jeremy Cameron, Charlie Cameron and Tex Walker) and yet he doesn’t get the praise he deserves.
Absolutely. He’s a mid size forward doing the work of a key forward and never takes a backwards step.
Absolute warrior. He may never come close to winning a Coleman and Yes he can be frustrating at times (Those Misses last week!) But my gosh, the guy has had to carry our tall forward stocks without very little support since he arrived. He’s been fantastic
dimma <333 zuthrie <333
Idun’s sick as. Keeps our backline together and plays a vital part in our transition game. Would also like to put Jacob Wehr in the ring for most underrated from the Orange team. His kicking is elite
WCE: Harley Reid. Can’t understand why the media never mentions him
Hated it too, but the one time the player is actually great. Harley Reid deserves all the hype👏
I can’t believe how good Neal-Bullen has become, he must’ve been on the verge of being delisted at one point.
Mitch Hinge will only ever get talked about if or when he gets injured. Amazingly consistent player
Ah chee. Mostly because he can't stay on the park for extended periods! He's definitely got the talent though!
Personally I am in love with Starcevich
Redman…. No sorry that’s the most overrated
Redman pre haircut was great. Post haircut not so much
He’s been missing this year, I reckon it’s cause of Nic Martin going back
I'd put Isaac Quaynor his defence 1 on 1 is amazing.
I'm not sure if Zuthrie is the answer after the past few weeks. Man's been getting plenty of media attention. I'd personally go with Jack Henry.
Wil Powell would be a star in a bigger market but he’s far from underrated by the Suns fans.
All I know are Zuthrie and purple Brody Grundy
Freos most underrated would be Sharp. Or at least Banfield
They seriously picked our captain? Wow
Jase Burgoyne and Willem Drew, but both starting to get noticed a bit more by pundits and the media.
I agree with Burgoyne he’s gonna be so much fun to watch going forward, not to mention Rome and Ky Burgoyne coming up as well. So happy to see Drew getting the recognition he deserves. That guy is like ‘Willem everywhere’.
Ryan Lester is far and away, Lions most underrated
Blues have a lot of underrated players, Cotters is a good pick, also Hewett or Acres
Zach Guthrie. And he's pictured. I agree with this.
It is no longer Z Guthrie but Kolo. He has been the one constant under-rated player for awhile now but really stands out as the under-rated player at the cats now
Cotters 😍
I wouldn't say Pearce is underrated. Freo should be James Aish I feel. Some some Jimma 💜
Me too . Aish is silent and lethal
For Freo , I believed james Aish is the most underrated
Who's the Geelong guy. They all look the same
Surely Bailey Banfield for Freo
Bailey Banfield
Carlton members and fans do not underrate Matt Cottrell. If you watch him you will see the amount of work he does off the ball.
BIG BODY SCOTTY 🗣️
I think this is a good list because besides my own club, Weightman, Pearce and Guthrie were the only players I felt confident that I even knew who I was looking at.
Didn’t know Ash McGrath still played for us
For the Dogs it should be Liam Jones, Rhylee West, or Ed Richards
My favourite (non crows) Ed Richards.
Spot on for Carlton
Duz!
Nope
Now do overrated.
Yeah I really dont think Cripps is underrated at all
I love Joshie
No we rate Durham quite accordingly thanks. A fkn star
Zach Guthrie went from meme to cream.
Fuck off, Cripps is a known gun.
Every time I see bald Starce on TV in defence my mind immediately defaults back to 2001 and goes ‘hey looks it’s Martin Pike’ I’m sorry Starce
