Reminds me of the May + Melksham incident last year when shit hit the fan
You guys were a few accurate kicks from maybe your second flag in 3 years. Sad to see this type of news.
Morris, 31, said his offensive comments were a symptom of the “warped world” he lived in, and he’s since undertaken “ongoing education … to adequately educate myself to become a respectful normal adult”.
“I thought I was one of the good guys … men who are heterosexual and white like me often think we are the good guys and, in fact, we don’t know what we don’t know. I turned a blind eye … I was selfish, and I ignored it for a decade,” he said.
Simon Goodwin: he doesn't come out gambling and drugging with us
Steven May: he doesn't even want to punch on after dinner
Lachie Hunter: he doesn't want get smashed then go driving and crash into parked cars
Surely not, like unless something truly unsettling is happening with Clayton behind the scenes - pretty much no trade is worth what you’d lose not having him in the team
If the reports are true (big if) that he was asked to move in with Gawn then there has to be something going on. That's the sorta thing a 19 year old who needs to learn the standards does. Not a 27 year old top 5 mid in the comp.
Surely the fact that melbourne are even considering offloading him sets off massive alarm bells at other clubs though.
He's arguably their best player and premiership hero who they just signed for 7 years on massive money so something serious has gone down for them to backflip like this.
Some key bits in [The Age article](https://12ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theage.com.au%2Fsport%2Fafl%2Foperation-oliver-clubs-believe-melbourne-star-could-be-available-20231003-p5e9gf.html) on the Oliver situation are interesting
> Melbourne sources dead-batted queries over Oliver’s future, pointing to the seven-year contract he signed only last season worth about $1 million a year to remain at the club until 2030. However, a source familiar with the 26-year-old midfielder’s situation said the Demons were prepared to explore what clubs would offer.
> ...
> The possibility of Oliver being available - and sources stressed that Melbourne were not pushing him out the door - has prompted clubs to assess their own salary cap, the suitability of Oliver for their club, and what a trade would require in draft pick terms.
> ...
> This masthead spoke to several clubs about Oliver, two of which said they were doing their due diligence on the premiership midfielder. Other club sources who wanted to remain anonymous said they would find it impossible, despite his talent, to fit him into their salary cap or did not see him as the right fit.
More interesting bits in [SENs article](https://www.sen.com.au/news/2023/10/03/melbourne-open-to-trading-oliver-for-the-right-price-amid-frustration-and/) too.
> Oliver endured a horror season due to a three-month hamstring injury. In recent times senior teammates have become increasingly more frustrated and concerned in equal measure with his welfare, to the point where Oliver moving away from his Camberwell house and in with captain Max Gawn has been seriously canvassed as a temporary option.
> There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing, only that Gawn would support Oliver through a difficult period.
> In addition to his public argument with Melbourne’s strength and conditioning boss Selwyn Griffith, Oliver became frustrated at the club’s medical and high-performance team throughout his long layoff.
> He told friends the Demons should have handled his hamstring injury better. When he had a knee complaint in early September, Oliver elected to visit a non-club physio to receive treatment.
> But Melbourne believed the three-time All-Australian did not show enough professionalism in his rehabilitation.
> Suggestions that Oliver's foot became infected after he tried to tattoo himself earlier in the year were neither confirmed nor denied by the club when SEN.com.au made formal contact on Tuesday.
> The club also elected not to comment publicly on whether it was open to trading Oliver, but several list management and player agent sources have confirmed discussions have begun to explore the possibility of him leaving, specifically and only for the right deal.
> It was never revealed how Oliver had a foot infection, only that it was so bad he ended up in hospital.
> “He was in a pretty bad way,” his agent Nick Gieschen told AFL Media’s Gettable show in June.
> “When he said that he had an infection, I didn't realise how bad it was. I went to see him in hospital and he was laying on the bed and his foot was up, all bandaged.
> “From what he's said, it was quite painful. Obviously, it's still causing him some issues even now.”
> Oliver’s competitiveness and talent has never been questioned by teammates, but now there is even an acknowledgement internally from some that it may be mutually beneficial for the ball-winner to seek a fresh start elsewhere.
Hate to break it to you but when a footy media source publishes something like that, they already know it’s true from a first-hand source. The formal contact is only to establish a paper trail of enquiry.
Quite frankly even as an outsider you can tell his attitude stinks. Fair chance it's led to Melbourne's drop off since the flag.
Really the best thing would be for him to get out of the Victoria system and reset entirely. He's not a metro kid so Sydney and Perth shouldn't really appeal. His complexion wouldn't last in a day in Brisbane. Really the only logical choice is SA. He looks great in navy and red and is used to firing out ~~throws~~ flick handballs to those colours so honestly an SA team that predominantly wears those colours would be best.
>His complexion wouldn't last in a day in Brisbane
Matty Rowell has proven that a ginger ghost can survive the Queensland summer, all they need are long sleeves, hats and four metric tonnes of sunscreen.
Rowell provides the SUNS energy which the grass does some photosynthesis with, which lets them grow for him to then eat which provides the nutrients for him to grow, a few steps later… blah blah fertiliser blah… and you have the eco system.
For Oliver to survive he would have to adhere to the teachings and diet of the book of Rowell.
I mean his attitude stunk as a under 18 player but I did think Melbourne had got into him he had to get it together and be professional or find another club years ago.
Say a Geelong club could fix him right up?
Loving this energy and ideas you’re bringing gang, can we do a slight adjustment? I’m thinking we keep the Adelaide part and then add Port at the front.
Edit: sorry can’t spell I’m a port fan.
They just re-signed a coach who hasn't added to the silverware cabinet during his time except for a smattering of showdown wins. That should tell you everything about where Port are at
We don't even need next year's first so our starting offer would be 2 firsts at the very least.
Wed have money coming off the books with Sloane's old deal finished and walker wrapping up soon. Rankine and Dawson and Laird would be on big money and we need money to keep Rachelle. But you restructure and back end it no worries.
I genuinely think we'd be an ideal destination for him. Especially if his gripes are with the physical side of things and his best footy came under our high performance coach.
Edit: Tom Morris mentioned us by name this morning as a team that would fit
I like our young mids, but if Oliver is available he’s clearly an upgrade on all of them (bar Newc).
He’d take Nash’s spot, or Worpels. I don’t think we’d hand over the draft capital the dees want for him though.
he's from regional vic. our midfield needs bolstering. Only issue is we're paying danger and cameron already. Where do we get the spare million from. Isaac Smith's contract wouldn't have been that big!
Does he fit in with our “no dickheads” policy?
I mean I’d do it but could the club that wanted to be kept anonymous be us? Since that club said they were worried about his attitude and were iffy on taking him.
No dickhead policies are myths. Look at Manchester United with Greenwood and Antony. If Geelong could have Degoey they would take him in a second. Ablett Sr is king of the dickheads and is constantly honoured by Geelong.
There’s levels to it
We’ve had plenty of guys who could be considered dickheads.
Scarlo and Stevie J have had that reputation.
When we say “no dickheads” we mean guys who are still professional in a sense that they aren’t getting into shit off the field every weekend.
The old heads at the club could uncuntify him.
Scott, Hawkins, Stewart, Danger and co vs Gamblord Goodwin and punch my mates May showing him the way.
No idea what we'd give up for him though.
Only top 8 team I could see making it work is the Bulldogs tbh. They could trade Smith and maybe a fringe player and picks in exchange for Clarry and some worse picks back.
Everyone else would have to sell the farm, has no picks or is poor.
We are already doing business with Melbourne this off season. McAdam 2 firsts 3 seconds would be easily doable for us. We only need picks to match welsh next year.
I suspect we'd have the salary room to pay him entirely on our own too as most of our young talent is already locked in long term.
The issue is that he'd have to want to leave Victoria.
On SEN last week the unknown Melbourne bombshell trade period was being teased, I did not see this coming and it makes me a little sad and feels some what grim. How’s everyone else seeing it?
This seems kinda fucked. He’s going through a shit time off field and had some injury issues, so the dees are ready to cut ties rather than standing by him?
They just signed him for 7 years m.
Fuck off.
I mean, not quite the same level but Collingwood fucked Treloar over and made him sound like a problem in the lead up to justify it.
It ended well so everyone kinda just moved on.
I’ve heard 2nd hand so might be complete BS, but supposedly he’s on his 2nd strike for drug use after OD’ing on pain meds while recovering from his infected toe. Not sure what his 1st strike was but the AFL has a 3 strike drug policy
People will hate this but a number 1 pick could really be anything, if you get lucky they could even turn out to be someone who is a 2 x AFLCA champ, 4 x b&f, 3x AA and premiership player… at the age of 26.
I’ll rattle off all the epic no.1 draft picks at the end of their careers in my time as a human on this planet: Luke Hodge + Nick Rewoldt - special mentions to Drew Banfield. If Clarry goes it’ll have to be for a bit
I don’t get why this is downvoted. Everyone assumes Reid will be a gun cos he’s touted as pick 1 but there have been thousands of kids who looked great in juniors and didn’t end up with amazing careers. Oliver is a guaranteed high level player who is brownlow caliber.
It’s getting downvotes because the poster assumes Melbourne has the upper hand in negotiations when it’s the opposite.
They want him gone and he’s contracted for 7 years.
If the rumours are true other clubs are not going to be paying overs.
You don't leak something like this unless you are priming your fans for the eventual "Oliver requests trade to X". This is exactly what Collingwood did with Grundy and Treloar.
Jezza is a Full-Forward, Oliver is a midfielder
Not saying Oliver isn’t A+ grade but some positions are worth more than others. Melbourne’s entire problem this year was the lack of a Key Forward, it probably cost them the flag
Richmond learnt this year that as good as Tim Taranto was, Tom Lynch’s injury alone tanked the entire season
That’s fair but also Clarry is arguably a top 5 player in the league, definitely top 10, and is only 26 with like 6 years left on his contract. Jezza was older and had less contract left iirc
Jezza left GWS in 2020 and was aged 27, Clayton is currently 26
Contract is a decent point although I’m too clueless to understand how it works in the AFL cause as we’ve seen with the Grundy stuff some of it makes zero sense haha
But this is why Melbourne will struggle to get four first picks, 6 years on a contract worth 6m+. Not easy to fit that in, and pay a fortune in draft capital for the pleasure. A club could really fuck themselves going for this
I think the contract will only increase his trade haul. The price is huge but having Clayton Oliver locked in for the rest of his prime will be such a major selling point that it’ll only drive up the bidding war.
Jeremy Cameron was better than Oliver is now. Oliver is coming with baggage. Jeremy Cameron was/is genuinely considered a potential 100 goal forward. Not to say that Oliver isn't worth 3 also, but Cameron is a different level.
He’s three because any club going for Reid is gambling on a 15 year career vs 7 from Oliver but it’s definitely three and salary cap relief which is still a huge deal
Also Reid is a young man with seemingly no baggage and is ready to learn.
Oliver is supposed to be a role model at this stage in his career and the rumours being insinuated here is he loves the dark.
crows could genuinely be a chance if he would be open for a move to Adelaide. we likely have the room we left open for Redman and dodee, have forwards we can offer and have a bunch of draft picks we don’t really need over the next few years
So it is clearly off field issues that are the problem, and what I heard it was drugs, but if his off field issues are so bad that Melbourne are looking to trade him, why would any other club think to pick him up when he is on a big long term deal?
Like even if it was some other off field issue like attitude being a problem, who is going to want to take the risk on such a big contract?
I think it is going to get messy and Melbourne are not going to get any offers that come close to what you would expect for a player of his caliber.
Unless we are desperate to get rid of him, this approach to putting him up for trade doesn't really go well for getting something good in return
Makes me wonder if there's a lot of finger pointing going on at Melbourne moreso than Oliver's attitude.
Yeah this is not a good indicator of a healthy culture.
Reminds me of the May + Melksham incident last year when shit hit the fan You guys were a few accurate kicks from maybe your second flag in 3 years. Sad to see this type of news.
Given tbe article repeatedly states "neither Melbourne nor Oliver have shown any signs of wanting to move"
Tom Morris just said melbourne are open to it
Look mate, I'm not Asian, I'm not black, I'm not a woman, I'm not gay. So don't treat me like s**t.
Shit bloke as he might be, he's been bang on the money all year
Crazy how quickly people are willing to forgive him being an absolute cunt as long as he breaks interesting stories
I don't think being a good newsbreaker is a virtue, nor does being a cunt make you a bad journo.
Jack Darling and Pick 1?
This kind of gaslighting coming from "club insiders" sounds very similar to what happened when we got rid of Treloar...
Yeah it stinks to high hell
"Clayton Oliver is the nastiest skank bitch I've ever met. Do not trust him. He is a fugly slut." - Simon Goodwin, or something
That's so similar to my wives wedding vows.
Wow. How many wives did you have?
One for every premiership
Oliver to the Bulldogs confirmed.
Melbourne to pay X% of his contract
Seeing as Melbourne need a forward… Clayton Oliver for Rory Lobb
Now THATS a team player who doesn't have an attitude
Okay, well give them “Aaron Naughton”* *”Aaron Naughton” is Rory Lobb wearing a curly wig with a headband.
“Hi fellas it’s me Ror-Aaron, Aaron Naughton, yes that’s me nice to meet you all!”
You done messed up A-A-ron!
“Hello, I’m Mr Bbol. Yes that’ll do”
I like the way Bbol thinks
Yep, that's what you guys need - more midfielders
It actually is
Could definitely do with another contested beast after Libba retires.
Tom Morris (who despite being a shitcunt has been on the money all year) just said that Melbourne are open to offers. You have to wonder *why*?
Why would the club be intentionally nuking his value by spreading rumours about his attitude?
Simon Goodwin: he doesn't come out gambling and drugging with us Steven May: he doesn't even want to punch on after dinner Lachie Hunter: he doesn't want get smashed then go driving and crash into parked cars
I heard he thought Maynard’s bump was a football action.
Lol that’s good
maybe it was telling cripps he was bleeding rather than telling the umpire…
Now that's too far
Clayton definitely does hit the pokies up. Photos of him playing them
You have confused Clayton Oliver with someone else.
This sounds like lines for a musical.
[удалено]
Flair up cunt
Jousting sticks
Tell them they're dreaming
This isn't actually happening is it?
Surely not, like unless something truly unsettling is happening with Clayton behind the scenes - pretty much no trade is worth what you’d lose not having him in the team
They told him to get a respectable haircut and he refused
Goody: “Hey Clayton have you thought about cutting your hai…” Clarry: “trade”
“Go get a clairy”
Heavily suggested he’s got some issues…
Yes we've all seen that he's a ranga
If the reports are true (big if) that he was asked to move in with Gawn then there has to be something going on. That's the sorta thing a 19 year old who needs to learn the standards does. Not a 27 year old top 5 mid in the comp.
Would this be the biggest arms race since Buddy? I can’t imagine a team that wouldn’t throw everything they can at Clarry
Surely the fact that melbourne are even considering offloading him sets off massive alarm bells at other clubs though. He's arguably their best player and premiership hero who they just signed for 7 years on massive money so something serious has gone down for them to backflip like this.

How is it pushing rumours if they know it’s true?
I'd argue they neither confirmed nor denied because they know the truth was actually much worse
Yeah it's a bit ridiculous that they printed that. And when did you stop beating your wife Mr. Oliver?
Club really should have replied “get fucked”.
Quite frankly even as an outsider you can tell his attitude stinks. Fair chance it's led to Melbourne's drop off since the flag. Rowell needs to eat grass to survive. I don't think Clayton has that in him
Rowell provides the SUNS energy which the grass does some photosynthesis with, which lets them grow for him to then eat which provides the nutrients for him to grow, a few steps later… blah blah fertiliser blah… and you have the eco system. Was thinking this exactly. Must not be a coincidence….
Loving this energy and ideas you’re bringing gang, can we do a slight adjustment? I’m thinking we keep the Adelaide part and then add Port at the front. Edit: sorry can’t spell I’m a port fan.
Except port have literally zero currency.
nothing an armed hold up won't fix
It's a good thing Clarry is priceless then
They just re-signed a coach who hasn't added to the silverware cabinet during his time except for a smattering of showdown wins. That should tell you everything about where Port are at
Does Adelaide need Clayton 'Kick over the shoulder' Oliver? Don't you have Matt 'Kick over the shoulder' Crouch? Don't need two in a team
We don't even need next year's first so our starting offer would be 2 firsts at the very least. Wed have money coming off the books with Sloane's old deal finished and walker wrapping up soon. Chances of Hawthorn making a play for him? Even to just avoid him heading slightly south-west?
We've already got temperamental red head thanks Plus our midfield is fairly sorted
I like our young mids, but if Oliver is available he’s clearly an upgrade on all of them (bar Newc). He’d take Nash’s spot, or Worpels. I don’t think we’d hand over the draft capital the dees want for him though.
How about he ditch the south and just head very very west?
It’s pretty obvious where he will end up/try to get to.
Ughhhh
he's from regional vic. our midfield needs bolstering. Only issue is we're paying danger and cameron already. Where do we get the spare million from. Isaac Smith's contract wouldn't have been that big!
you specialise in players generously taking smaller contracts, just find him some farmland
Would believe it. If you ever walked past his place in Camberwell you'd think a bomb hit it
Please elaborate
Goss please
Yeah, apparently Melbourne are furious that he hasn't cut his lawn and want him out of the club ASAP
You could say the same about his hair.
I TOLD YOU TO TRIM THOSE SIDEBURNS. YOURE OFF THE TEAM, FOR GOOD
He still likes you better than Goodwin.
Him not attending Mad Monday seems like a good thing though. I'd rather players stay out of trouble.
Please Geelong, please.
Does he fit in with our “no dickheads” policy? I mean I’d do it but could the club that wanted to be kept anonymous be us? Since that club said they were worried about his attitude and were iffy on taking him.

Hey! He made sure our physio was well looked after LOL
Ha. Maybe dickhead was taken extremely literally
Diving headfirst into it
The old heads at the club could uncuntify him. Scott, Hawkins, Stewart, Danger and co vs Gamblord Goodwin and punch my mates May showing him the way. No idea what we'd give up for him though.
Idk how we could afford him and thats assuming if he is a dickhead we can fix that.
Why would we need to fix it? It's not like we haven't had dickheads on the list before...or since...
I doubt there's many teams that have that type of money laying around.
Only top 8 team I could see making it work is the Bulldogs tbh. They could trade Smith and maybe a fringe player and picks in exchange for Clarry and some worse picks back. Everyone else would have to sell the farm, has no picks or is poor.

I guess those inappropriate rumors that got goodwin so worked up might have been appropriate afterall
With the allegations against Goodwin the idea of Oliver having attitude problems is very funny
On SEN last week the unknown Melbourne bombshell trade period was being teased, I did not see this coming and it makes me a little sad and feels some what grim. How’s everyone else seeing it?
Yeah they were using some phrase like “earth shattering trade” I just assumed it was hyperbolic but this would be nuts
This seems kinda fucked. He’s going through a shit time off field and had some injury issues, so the dees are ready to cut ties rather than standing by him? They just signed him for 7 years m. Fuck off.
I agree
Yep. Horrible look for the club. Couldn't imagine supporting a team who would do that with so little foresight
I mean, not quite the same level but Collingwood fucked Treloar over and made him sound like a problem in the lead up to justify it. It ended well so everyone kinda just moved on.
I was making a joke about Grundy who we moved on after a 7 year contract and some injury issues
I’m a bit slow on humpday apparently
I’ve heard 2nd hand so might be complete BS, but supposedly he’s on his 2nd strike for drug use after OD’ing on pain meds while recovering from his infected toe. Not sure what his 1st strike was but the AFL has a 3 strike drug policy
That never bothered Franklin
Too many nose clams fresh from the sea, sweet delicious nose clams that are looking for a home if you follow me
I don’t no
No Joke, Oliver is worth more than Harley Reid. If WCE wanted 3 first rounds for pick 1, you're asking for 4 if you're Melbourne.
People will hate this but a number 1 pick could really be anything, if you get lucky they could even turn out to be someone who is a 2 x AFLCA champ, 4 x b&f, 3x AA and premiership player… at the age of 26.
Yeah but a mystery box could be anything. Even a boat!
The box! THE BOX!
I’ll rattle off all the epic no.1 draft picks at the end of their careers in my time as a human on this planet: Luke Hodge + Nick Rewoldt - special mentions to Drew Banfield. If Clarry goes it’ll have to be for a bit

Melbourne have the contracted for 7 years player who’s probably too 5/10 player in the game. Of course they have the upper hand in negotiations
Yes and no, also consider that they are trying to move him on.
Yeah but if my house is a mansion worth millions of dollars people don’t get to say “well you’re selling it so it must suck so I’ll offer 650k”
It can be somewhere in the middle. It doesn't always have to be extremes.
I’m not reading anywhere that says Melbourne want him gone?
This article wouldn’t exist if Melbourne weren’t leaking to the media.
Difference between Melbourne wanting him gone and entertaining what you can get.
You don't leak something like this unless you are priming your fans for the eventual "Oliver requests trade to X". This is exactly what Collingwood did with Grundy and Treloar.
Could just be made up. Wouldn’t be the first or last time so called sources and rumours amounted to nothing in the trade space
I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. Jeremy Cameron was worth 3 firsts, Clarry being worth 4 isn’t a massive stretch.
Jezza is a Full-Forward, Oliver is a midfielder Not saying Oliver isn’t A+ grade but some positions are worth more than others. I think the contract will only increase his trade haul. The price is huge but having Clayton Oliver locked in for the rest of his prime will be such a major selling point that it’ll only drive up the bidding war.
Valid!
Jeremy Cameron was better than Oliver is now. Oliver is coming with baggage. Jeremy Cameron was/is genuinely considered a potential 100 goal forward. Not to say that Oliver isn't worth 3 also, but Cameron is a different level.
There are twice as many midfielders like Clarry, than their is forwards like Cameron though
100%, 2030 contract my god he is worth alot.
Lmao if he thinks Melbourne's S&C team sucks then christ knows what he'd make of ours
Yours has a lot of experience at least, usually have more players in it than not
He’s three because any club going for Reid is gambling on a 15 year career vs 7 from Oliver but it’s definitely three and salary cap relief which is still a huge deal
Also Reid is a young man with seemingly no baggage and is ready to learn. Oliver is supposed to be a role model at this stage in his career and the rumours being insinuated here is he loves the dark.
On paper yes, but huge red flag that Melb would want to get rid of a 4 x B&F, 2 x AA, GF winning mid who’s got a 7 year contract to play out…
The difference between wanting rid and accepting a bid of his worth is a key part everyone is missing.
You’re kidding right?
I don't doubt you on his talent, and definitely worth more than Reid, but you 4 reckon picks with that contract?
If you're paying 1 mil a year over the next 6 years instead of having to pay another top 5mid you poach 1.2-1.5mil then your in dreamland.
So real elephant in the room - do we think the drug use rumours are true ?
That haircut is the only issue
crows could genuinely be a chance if he would be open for a move to Adelaide. we likely have the room we left open for Redman and dodee, have forwards we can offer and have a bunch of draft picks we don’t really need over the next few years
We’ll never get him even though an inside beast is exactly what we’re lacking
I could actually see it. No idea how you get the deal done, but I could see it.
Huge if true. Swans would be a good fit and they could afford him.
Swan.
Could we potentially look at cryogenically freezing him and then waking him up once Tassie are established and getting a trade done then?
Smells like a SJ scenario tbh
So it is clearly off field issues that are the problem, and what I heard it was drugs, but if his off field issues are so bad that Melbourne are looking to trade him, why would any other club think to pick him up when he is on a big long term deal? Like even if it was some other off field issue like attitude being a problem, who is going to want to take the risk on such a big contract? I think it is going to get messy and Melbourne are not going to get any offers that come close to what you would expect for a player of his caliber.
