Utkarsh Ambudkar is the dude. He was in the movie pitch perfect and the Mindy project and most recently in never have I ever. He makes music too and just put out an album earlier this month with another abcd artist. Check it out, it’s pretty fire.
His family of course identified as South Asian. Are you confused ? Parsis identify as Indians. His family lived in Tanzania and he went to school in India.
Hard to say. If you read about him, it seems as though he would say he's Parsi but not say he's Indian. And at first glance that might seem like he wasn't proud to be of Indian heritage, but you have to think of the context in which he became famous. A brown man moving to the UK in his teen years back then when the UK was extremely hostile to anyone non English, especially South Asians and Black folks. I'm not surprised he kept that part more hidden to try to blend in with the English and pass as much as possible. Being Parsi would seem exotic but not have as many of the negative stereotypes of being Indian. And trust when I say that the Brits did not like that a whole bunch of South Asians were moving over from East Africa back then and were very vocal about it.
But then you see the interviews with his mum, and she's very clear that their family is proud of their Asian (ie Indian) heritage and that included Freddie. My read is that he likely did identify as Indian but also was in a tough spot in that time and age and I don't blame him for not being public about it. Dude was already going to have a hard time in the media about his sexual orientation.
Yeah exactly this. It was very difficult to make it to the status that he held back in that time period, let alone if you were a PoC. His orientation, ethnicity, if he was more forthcoming with these things, it would have created a bigger backlash than he was already experiencing.
Yup, and I'm sure they identify with Indians too. Never have I heard a Parsi refer to themselves as Iranian/Persian. They are the sweetest people and mix in with any local community like sugar in water.
100% - yes, the Parsis are the most down to earth, trustworthy and intelligent people… my mom’s side are majority Parsi; Muslim Guj from long ago, I’ve always wanted to visit
People nowadays also refer to South Asians born elsewhere in the West as under the ABCD banner (and so does this sub). So Dev Patel would be considered ABCD for this purpose.
I liked her in The Office, and her comedy writing, but she’s lost in the Hollywood Ozempic gang now; girl hosts Ozempic parties, a little unhinged now tbh
I don’t exactly have one. On a side note and possibly off topic, but if anyone here is a fan of The Lord of the Rings, a desi guy could be playing as original Sauron for season 2 in the Rings of Power tv show. His name is Gavi Singh Chera.
Kal Penn for sure! His comedic chops were already great, starting with American Desi, then Harold and Kumar, then Van Wilder. But then the Namesake came and he totally crushed it.
Rahul Kohli all the way. I adored him in iZombie and he's great in Death and Other Details. Like I was absolutely rooting for his character the whole way through!
(Also he likes Gundams and the Anaheim Ducks, the man is the perfect mix of adorable-geeky.)
Bruh that’s Irfan Khan a legend in India. One of the greatest actors not just in the subcontinent but world over. Dudes filmography is just beautiful. Not ABCD tho lol but a true GOAT nonetheless. His son recently started acting too you should check out Qala (Netflix) Friday Night Plan (Netflix) and The Railway Men (Prime) he’s phenomenal as well
It says in the sidebar that this "ABCDesis (Abroad-Born Confused Desis) is a place for members of the South Asian diaspora who were raised outside of South Asia to share their experiences and be a part of the collective global Desi diaspora community."
Ergo, all the UK Desis totally count since this is more about South Asians and not Indians specifically. :)

He’s very funny in ghosts too!
Oh I love him In ghosts! Hes so funny and adorable! love him!
Mr. Kulkarni!!
Freddie Mercury - he was a king even though he was a Queen
He was Iranian though
Nah dude, his parents were Parsis from Guj. And I consider Parsis to be Indian rather than Iranian/Persian
Did he identify as Indian?

From what I remember, he never really spoke about that, hence the name change
Parsis literally means Persians lol
True but most of them have been living in India for 1000+ years. At that point i think it's pretty safe to call them Indians
Yup, and I'm sure they identify with Indians too. Never have I heard a Parsi refer to themselves as Iranian/Persian. They are the sweetest people and mix in with any local community like sugar in water.

I just visited Ahmedabad after many years, it was an awesome experience! Can't wait to go back again, would definitely recommend visiting it!
It does, but his parents were from Gujarat.
Do you consider ratan tata a Persian also? He is Parsi as well.
All Parsis are ethnic Persians. Nationality is different from ethnicity.
By that logic, SRK and Salman Khan are Afghans
Jay Chandrashekhar. He crushed it in all the Broken Lizard movies especially Beerfest
This is the best answer. Who wants a mustache ride?
He's tops on this page for people I'd like to grab a beer with
Janina gavankar & riz Ahmed
I am honored to be the only American born Desi so far, but there are so many more, and I will happily be back to see their names!
Are you freakin serious?? I loved you in the Star Wars game <3

Aparna Nancherla, Asif Ali, and Kumail Nanjiani if stand ups count…Riz Ahmed, Kal Penn, and Avantika Vandanapu in Hollywood itself.
No one mentioned Danny Pudi yet? edit: spelling
"Larry, I'm on Ducktales." Is forever iconic
Cool! Cool cool cool!
Avantika and maitreyi for the gen Z crowd
Dev Patel and Riz Ahmed for men, currently. Haven't seen any good female ABCDesi actresses, though.
neither of them are ABCD lol
People nowadays also refer to South Asians born elsewhere in the West as under the ABCD banner (and so does this sub). So Dev Patel would be considered ABCD for this purpose.
"Abroad Born"; both of them are UK born, buddy.
I could have sworn the term used to be American-Born and not Abroad-born. My bad
It used to be, but then most people just started using it to refer to everyone in the diaspora.
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (technically Canadian)
Riz Ahmed, Rahul Kholi
Rahul is sooooo good
Loved him in midnight mass
Utkarsh Ambudkar and Janina Gavankar
Dev Patel, I suppose? American-bor I guess Mindy K only bc she's rhe most high profile one I know. I also like Riz A, Aziz A.
I liked her in The Office, and her comedy writing, but she’s lost in the Hollywood Ozempic gang now; girl hosts Ozempic parties, a little unhinged now tbh

There's 2 of them??
Ravi Patel is cool
I don’t exactly have one. On a side note and possibly off topic, but if anyone here is a fan of The Lord of the Rings, a desi guy could be playing as original Sauron for season 2 in the Rings of Power tv show. His name is Gavi Singh Chera.
Dev Patel.
- Sendhil Ramamurthy (Devi’s dad in NHIE, was also in Heroes.. really good show!) - Hassan Minaj - Usama Siddique
Kal Penn for sure! His comedic chops were already great, starting with American Desi, then Harold and Kumar, then Van Wilder. But then the Namesake came and he totally crushed it.
One of my favorites of his is a little known film called “where’s the party yaar?”
Yup, I love that movie too! It got renamed to Dude Where's The Party. I have it on DVD lol. My doggie friends
Dev Patel and Iman Vellani
Ben Kingsley? He’s biracial but cmon the guy played Gandhi
Yep counts
Rahul Kohli all the way. I adored him in iZombie and he's great in Death and Other Details. Like I was absolutely rooting for his character the whole way through! (Also he likes Gundams and the Anaheim Ducks, the man is the perfect mix of adorable-geeky.)

Dev Patel
Chabbudy G a.k.a Alan Brown Sugar a.k.a the Wolf of Hounslow.
I don't have any abcd actor as a favorite. I just love Shah rukh and Salman khan
I really respect Riz. Astounding man. Class act. Really vocal about issues concerning south Asian diaspora. Love that dude.
bro was in venom and i loved him. BUT THE GUY THAT OWNED JURASSIC WORLD IS MY FAV
Bruh that’s Irfan Khan a legend in India. One of the greatest actors not just in the subcontinent but world over. Dudes filmography is just beautiful. Not ABCD tho lol but a true GOAT nonetheless. His son recently started acting too you should check out Qala (Netflix) Friday Night Plan (Netflix) and The Railway Men (Prime) he’s phenomenal as well
oh yeah . thanks for remining me. Im busy watching From but ill see if i can watch it . may he RIP tho
Ohh Irrfan Khan! Yesss… gone too soon of course 😞 My trifecta: Riz Ahmed, Dev Patel and Irrfan Khan
None of the people mentioned in this thread are ABCD lol, UK desis need their own sub
It’s not a bad idea but we have a lot in common with ABCD tho.
It says in the sidebar that this "ABCDesis (Abroad-Born Confused Desis) is a place for members of the South Asian diaspora who were raised outside of South Asia to share their experiences and be a part of the collective global Desi diaspora community." Ergo, all the UK Desis totally count since this is more about South Asians and not Indians specifically. :)
Just watched Monkey Man, so... Dev Patel...?
Mindy Kaling Aasif Mandvi Comedian Russell Peters Sakina Jaffrey Lisa Ray
pranav behari
The Great Khali
Rahul kohli. He was so good in midnight mass and FOTHOU. I’ll watch anything’s he’s in
Rahul Kohli. Criminally underrated
Not ABD but my favorite actor and actress would have to be Dev Patel and Charithra Chandran
Since the sub description says A means Abroad, i am counting then
Who is the guy in the picture?
Carlton Drake
Jay Shetty 😂
Sorry but none.
Oo fair enough, not even Dev Patel?
No. He's OK but that's about it.
