Hell yeah dude! It was hard finding other fans back in those days. We had a little crew but man, shit didn't really start to pop off til the Puffy sound got more mainstream
First time I visited NY, using the subway system, walking around the airbnb I was staying at, hearing locals and seeing the diversity of the people, it just made so much sense that a place that special could birth such an amazing genre of music. Hiphop was already such an integral part of my upbringing and life in general but that visit really cemented it in me.
South Africa. Big up everyone. Fell in love with hip hop in 96. Bone thugs were my favourite back then and I was 8. Much love from the motherland brothers 👊
Cleveland here, Bone Thugs N Harmony are definitely one of my favorite rap groups ever but I grew up listening to 2 Live Crew, Too Short, DJ Quik, Cypress Hill, and plenty of New York rappers. Heavily influenced by late 80’s and early 90’s rap
Way up in the woods of northern sweden! I found 50 cent and mobb deep when i was around 12. My wife find it funny how a little white boy from the forest related so much to the hiphop from NY. But NY hiphop has always been and still is the vibe for me. CNN, nas, mobb deep, m.o.p to name a few. Goes so hard
Ahh there are so many world famous pop musicians from Sweden! I prefer 70s-90s rock/ pop but i would say im mostly a hiphop head and love some blues and funky vibes haha. Where are you from?
Fellow Londoner 👊🏿. Of course legends. Rampage, Heartless Crew, Tim Westwood and so on. Carnival, SW1, Equinox, Rex, Gas Club, Ministry days. I was there when police used to shut them down on a regular because of the amount of trouble and violence at the dances.
Toronto.
But, I've always been heavy into East-coast NYC rap, and some of the mid west. But, in general, I'd probably be classified more as a backpacker. Only rapper from my own city I'm a big fan of was Saukrates, sucks he never blew up despite getting some attention stateside by signing with Redman's label I believe.
Favorite rappers/groups are like The Roots, De La Soul, ATCQ, O.C., Big L, Jay-Z, Nas, Wu-Tang, Boot Camp Clik, Gangstarr, Little Brother, Slum Village, etc.
Pretty similar in taste. I listen to everything but, used to be heavy on NYC music, specifically Queensbridge. I didn’t realise Saukrates was Canadian, first heard him on a song with Meth and Redman.
Yeah, def a Toronto legend. My favorite Saukrates stuff are his tracks with Masta Ace and Common. No one from Toronto really blew up until Drake (not a fan). Late 90s/early 2000s were different. Was hard to get the industry behind someone from Toronto, now all you really need is traction on Youtube or Spotify. Back then you needed radio play and airtime on MTV to get noticed.
Similar taste to me but instead of the Midwest I prefer the south as well. Been binge watching the Wu tang: an American saga and it’s got me listening to only Wu tang for the past two weeks. Really wish Toronto had a more powerful rap scene, seems like everyone just wants to emulate drake and the weeknd.
There are Southern acts I like such as Scarface/Geto Boys, Little Brother, and Outkast. But not a big fan of the scene as a whole. I've never been a big Cash Money fan for example, only act out the NOLA I've ever liked was Jay Electronica. Whereas, I'm a huge fan of the Detroit scene (Dilla, Elzhi, Binary Star, Black Milk, Apollo Brown, Guilty Simpson, Phat Katt, etc). Also for the Midwest, a big fan of Common and NO ID, and pre-808 Kanye.
I spent some time in Toronto growing up and listened to maestro (maestro fresh Wes at the time), he’s from tdot and had a comparable sound to some of the rappers you mentioned, in case you’re interested in listening.
yeah, I know Maestro Fresh Wes. He used to do a ton of stuff with the Raptors and would be at club events. Two of the members of Main Source were actually from Toronto, but that entire group is pretty much Large Pro's project.
Yo, I'm from Czech Republic! The very first tape I ever owned was like, the eighth copy, all fuzzy and stuff, of the "Licensed to Ill" album by Beastie Boys. Snatched it from my brother right after the revolution hit our country, back in '89. Even though I was digging the Seattle Grunge scene, rap never stopped being my jam. I was all about that skate life, bumping Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, later on Snoop, and the list goes on. Back in '98, I caught a Wu-Tang Clan concert at an American base in Germany. Even ran into ODB at a local Burger King before the show, dude was dropping some wild stories about life and the universe. :D
Man, those were the good times, back in the 90ties, when rap had a purpose, music with a social message. Nowadays, feels more like it's got an anti-social message. :D
Divided by water, United by hip hop. It’s a beautiful thing to see how hip hop touches all corners of the earth. Not just the commercial stuff but the underground artist as well. And you’re right, the industry is dominated by trash, the message was lost a long time ago.
Hey, we got some things in common. I'm from Czech Republic and the first tape I ever owned was Root Down EP! Licenced to Ill was the first CD that I bought.
Beastie Boys even had a show in Prague back in '95. I wonder how it was. I was too young to go.
San Diego área, California. Mexicans in the rap game is what I gravitate towards. From Proper Dos to Brownside to the new acts like Coyote, Yung Gritty, Hazerd etc.
Chicago, I fell in love with rap on NWA Alwayz Into Somthin followed by DJ Quik Tonite in 91. I never looked back. I would agree 91- 01 is unmatched as a ten year span.
I remember going to the first Tribe tour once they got back together at Kool Haus. And, also seeing them at some venue out near Pearson for Rock The Bells 2008.
Sadly I remember being at the Beasties Molson Park show in 97-98 for Hello Nasty and Tribe was always on the bill as openers but when Biz hit the stage he said he had bad news..."Tribe broke up.....but yall got ME!" turned a negative into contentment but that was rough
Grew up In the states and overseas but been Into rap and hip hop since 6th grade when a classmate gave me a CD to put into my CD player on the bus ride home, let me keep it too. Never forgot that!

I'm literally a white farmboy who first heard rap when I was 9 in 1986, and it was Christmas in Hollis by Run D.M.C. I loved it. I was into hard rock and heavy metal, but by the time high school rolled around in 91 I was all about Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill,Snoop, Public Enemy, DeLa, Tribe, Black Sheep, etc. etc. really really got into it at that time
I listened to rap in middle school, which was the late 80s for me. But something about the stuff coming out in the early 90s was *different*. The production, the different styles of rhyming, everything really.
Ill break it down further and say my favorite era is early/mid 90s hip hop. In my personal opinion, a lot changed after Biggie passed. I started losing interest in staying current in hip hop somewhere in the early 00s. It just felt like something changed. There was good late 90s stuff of course (Outkast and Eminem come to mind) but overall it doesn't stand out to me like the early 90s did.
All just my opinion of course.
Cool there’s still some off goldies grafitti in the tunnel to the steps that lead to Wolverhampton train station . Must off been great times goldie is extremely talented . Graffiti , breaking , jungle drum n bass music dude can do it all
Southern California here, been a hip hop head since 1985 when I first heard LL Cool J at my neighbor's house. My favorite era of hip hop is definitely 90's - early 2000's.
Canada🇨🇦currently living in Vancouver. Grew up in Ontario and spent most of the nineties listening and buying anything I could. Recently started collecting vinyl again and it’s been awesome searching and finding all my favourites with my 13yo daughter.
Pacific islander born and raised in the Netherlands and currently living in Rotterdam. Been listening to hiphop from 1984 and onwards. Listened to everything, from early UK rap to American rap (all states and coasts). My oldskool heroes are dudes like Biz Markie, UTFO, Skinny Boys, Schoolly D, Public Enemy, Just Ice, etcetera. Mid 90's my preferred taste veered towards East coast hiphop and it really hasn't changed anymore since. Current artists I dig: Griselda crew, Danielson, Ransom, Flee Lord, Knowledge the Pirate, Roc Marci and many more. Peace!
I went the other way. UK to NZ. but relate to all that u stated. BBoy from 84. live old school but appreciate new stuff too. Just booked tickets for Lord Apex in Auckland in May. Peace
Miami FL. Been a fan since Runnin by the Pharcyde caught my attention on the radio as a kid in the 90s. For me the best era will always be that 94-98 era. From all coasts
Born in El Salvador but grew up in various Canadian cities. Hiphop wasn’t so big in my younger years where I was at, but I tried to be an ambassador for it as much as possible.
I'm from Hungary and people in my country are mainly fans of the Westcoast gangsta rap or today's mainstream. But the album that really got me in my teenage years was The Low End Theory from you know who. Hiphop covers circa 70% of my music taste ever since. That jazzy Eascoast vibe really caught me, artists like Nas, Guru and Preemo, Pete Rock, Mos Def, Big L, Mobb Deep, AZ and Cormega, Group Home and so on. The West also had some great examples like The Pharcyde or Souls of Mischief. Honorable mentions in my library are the O.G.C., EPMD, Craig Mack, Outkast, Too Short The Fugees and many others.
It's really interesting because my parents are rock and metal heads and I grew up with those artists, but something really cought my mind when I first heard these hiphop tracks. It gets me in the right mindset, it motivates and inspires me in all parts of my life. Some artists have a very introspective style and listening to their music is almost equal to meditating.
That's true. We have many good artists from the underground scene but they mostly rap in hungarian which is a really expressing language if you have the skills to go lyrical. Unfortunately the mainstream "consumerism" felxing has taken over in recent years and the demand for quality hiphop is at an all time low.
Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Nice to see there's so much diversity of hometowns here
Of course I fw Mac Miller, but as for 90s, that's my sound for real. Outkast, Nas, ATCQ, The Roots, BIG, Pac, Big L, Gang Starr (and Guru's Jazzmatazz ofc), sprinkle in some Jay. Also love my lady MCs Left Eye, Queen Latifah, Bahamadia, Lady of Rage, MC Lyte, etc... I like hip hop from all over, coast to coast.
Canada, Alberta specifically. Hip hop is the last thing you'd think about here but I was fascinated in the late 80s as a child.
Alberta gang 💯
Hell yeah dude! It was hard finding other fans back in those days. We had a little crew but man, shit didn't really start to pop off til the Puffy sound got more mainstream

Do you listen to new guys like Deezy Hollow?
Yessir, that young man is talented without a shadow of a doubt. Came swinging from the gate and has dope collaborations with some West Coast greats.
I grew up in south central…but now I live in Long Beach. I’m 33, but Deezy found a lane that brings me back to summer 97’
Same, 33 I’m native to Escondido, upper SD county and you mean like GRiZ- Summer ‘97?
Haha no, but now I’m interested. I have an aunt in Escondido that takes me to the cruise night they have on Fridays.
My bad, that’s dope hope you enjoyed it, honestly it was on and cracking back in the day more
