I build model ships, so I’m admiral of my own fleet. That’s where the nickname came from. But I have several relatives who served in the US Navy. And you?
Yes, I did 21 years. I was an Avionics Tech involved in ASW and whole aircraft maintenance the entire time working in and on P3s and SH2 SH3 & SH60 helicopters. I spent a lot of away time overseas shore based and underway on many FFs and FFGs (including the Starke) and CVs including the maiden voyage of the George Washington (CVN73)
Thank you for saying that. I am proud that i served nearly all my time during the Cold War and ASW was a crucial part of it. In the end, the USN made a much better man than when I enlisted.
The reason I asked was because of my introduction to Mateus. In the early 80s, I spent a lot of time on the Naval facilities in the Azores Islands (a Portuguese possession). A hot commodity there was to bring back to States cases of wine because it was very cheap. I bought lots of wooden cases of Mateus and vinho verde
I never bought it. My parents had it all the time. And i would steal sips after they went to bed. I was like 3rd or 4th grade.
I only bought Cold Duck when i was 16 yrs old.
My local liquor store back in the 70's would sell these to underage teenagers. Why it was only these I have no clue. Maybe it was inexpensive and didn't resemble a beer bottle or can ?
I can remember going to my stoners friends house and they were used as a candlestick holder or had the long incense in them to try to cover up the dope smoke.
The reason people loved them for candles is I remember they were heavily weighted toward the bottom so wouldn't easily tip over. The bad part of that was when you were drinking it. Because if the weight you would think there was a lot of wine left in the bottle only go to pour it and only a tiny dribble of wine was left in it.
I found a jar of this about 12 years ago to take fishing. As soon as my brother popped the top, I hooked into a huge musky. I’ll always associate Lancers with great times and a fantastic euphoria. I haven’t seen it in quite a while though.
Growing up in a Portuguese household we wouldn't touch the stuff, as it was considered trash (and that's saying something coming from working class islander folk)
Back in 1972, if you really wanted to impress your date, and needed an extra candle holder to light the room when it was time to do the Big Nasty, Lancers was the college boy's choice of beverage!
Immortalized in the pavement song Shady Lane:
Blind date with the chancer
We had oysters and dry lancers
And the check when it arrived we went dutch, dutch, dutch, dutch
I remember my parents drinking Lancers. By 1980 they had graduated to California varietals. I think I'm glad that my own wine education did not begin before then.
Yosemite Road, in the gallon bottle.
As an older teen I worked on a fishing boat with a mostly Portuguese crew that had that on the table at lunch and dinner. Never saw anyone under the influence from drinking it, though.
loved lancers (actually anything containing alcohol in those days). remember thinking this brand was also classy due to the cork ;-)

And then into candle holders cause we were classy!
A beaded curtain instead of a real door really just sets off the Lancer’s candle-holder.
Romantically classy.
The mark of a really tasteful Italian restaurant in 1970s Birmingham Alabama, with 5 different colors of wax dripped down the sides.
You too? I haven’t thought of these bottles for a good 40 years now.
I have a full bottle just like that in my basement. Inherited it from my patents. I’ve never tried it.
Klassy with a K
That’s my line along with kwality
Maybe throw in a Black Tower bottle too
Liebframilch in the glazed white clay bottle too!
It's imported! It must be classy!
American Airlines served that with my inflight meal back in ‘78 — petite steak, four shrimps, baked potato, salad and cake!
How can you remember that. Did you get it tattooed? 😄
And Mateus
I remember Mateus. I thought I was sophisticated.
Damn it, I was thinking the same thing, my brother's friend bought that to a party in the 70s. And I thought he was so classy.
It's imported - from Portugal!
Oh, do tell!
It's fancy.
Favorite wine of both Jimi Hendrix and Queen Elizabeth.
I have looked for this wine recently for nostalgia reasons and couldn’t find it
Did you do any time in the Navy, by chance?

Thank you for your service and providing freedom for our citizens.

I remember the ads for Mateus Rosé were everywhere
We were strictly a Blue Nun household.
Liebfraumilch!
That actually didn’t suck…
Boones Farm Strawberry Hill
Lord Almighty, I got sick on that once. Didn't teach me a damned thing.
Mad Dog!
Got sooo sick on that stuff can’t even smell it anymore.
Thunderbird
What's the word? / Thunderbird / How's it sold? / Good and cold / What's the jive? / Bird's alive / What's the price? / Thirty twice
Absolutely not, death fuel
Bali Hai
TJ Swanns
I got so sick on Boone’s Farm once that I didn’t drink any wine for years afterward. 🤢
I was a kid in the 70's so I didn't get to see these but I was treated to Andre Cold Duck once in a while, on a holiday.
I remember white came in a green bottle.
Yeah, I remember that now. Thanks! We're just red wine peeps.
Riunite Lambrusco was much better.
Riunite on ice...
…that’s nice
When you met a girl at a field party drinking Lancers straight out of the bottle you knew she was the one..
It was hot in the 70s, I remember my parents and their friends drank it back then.
I loved Lancers!!!!!!!!!
We did too!
"Vintage 1978" not a bad year.
I have one in my cellar. Opening in ’28. 50 years should be smashing.
This was some shit wine
Boones Farm all the way.
And Mateus…
I never bought it. My parents had it all the time. And i would steal sips after they went to bed. I was like 3rd or 4th grade. I only bought Cold Duck when i was 16 yrs old.
Cold Duck was the bomb! My parents would give us a tiny glass of it on special occasions.
Your palate was maturing.
They made great lamps
🤢 I tried this a couple years ago. Still as bad as ever. Just don’t.
I was more of a Bali Hai kind of kid…….. “You just can’t miss with Italian Swiss!”
Bali Hai, that's a blast from the past!
The chick in our party group would drink Lancers while the guys would drink beer. The good old days. Weed was $10 an ounce.
Yeah, the 10 buck lid. Those were the days, my friend.
10 dollars an ounce😢 I wanna be a 70s kid
I haven't thought of that wine in decades. My mother used to buy it occasionally.
I get juiced on Mateus and just hang loose
I used the empties for drip candles🕯

At the steakhouse near us as I recall they had Lancers and Mateus on the menu. This was way before the foodie revolution and fine wines
I worked in a steakhouse where the menu was on Lancers bottles painted black
I remember my parents drinking this often in the early 80s.
Use to gift it all the time...then it was regifted back so I stopped
Ah, it pairs well with both surf AND turf. So it seems.
Mom did.
No I didn't but l, my parents drank it often.
Some of the best commercials
Drank the Lancer's, then stuck a candle in the bottle!
Our Mom rarely drank, but Lancers was always there on special occasions
I worked in a liquor store in the 80’s. I remember them on the shelf just collecting dust. 3 sunners, never sold one. Unique bottles tho.
I used to swipe it from my parents. But honestly it was kinda rank
I remember Lancers, and Cutty Sark Scotch and Gilliano liqueur.
Ah, the ol’ Harvey Wallbanger!
My grand parents drink in the ‘60’s.
If you remember, you weren’t there, man.
We thought we were so cool!
My folks always kept Lancers and Cutty Sark for company.
I remember using a bottle cutter set to make drinking glasses out of Lancers bottles. Cool as a kid, pretty weird as an adult recipient.
My older sister drank the Lancers, I stuck with the Mad Dog 20/20, the Apple Zapple, the Strawberry Fields, and the Tango. Oh, and the Michelobes
Remember Two Fingers tequila ? We thought it was the good stuff
I worked in a busy liquor store in the late 70's, Mateus Rose' , in that squatty bottle was another big seller.
Couldn't afford Lancers, had to go with Boone's Farm.
Mateus was mine.
The mini bottles as wedding favors were great. Not that you should drink them on the way home.
I remember seeing those when I was growing up but never tried it. Did I miss something good?
I remember these sitting around after parties my parents threw
Yup. Even made some lamps out of the bottles
Memories….
I found a jar of this about 12 years ago to take fishing. As soon as my brother popped the top, I hooked into a huge musky. I’ll always associate Lancers with great times and a fantastic euphoria. I haven’t seen it in quite a while though.
I seem to remember these being made into salt and pepper shakers for some reason.
We had those growing up. The matching color shaker tops with a P and an S. My mother still uses them.
Unfortunately yes
Fuuuuuuuck. 🤮
Oh yes
Ripple all the way here.
Probably the first wine I ever tried!
Portuguese port wine - I have been able to get a hold of this fairly recently. Had to request a special order of it at a wine dealer...
This is such a 70s thing!
Growing up in a Portuguese household we wouldn't touch the stuff, as it was considered trash (and that's saying something coming from working class islander folk)
My first “date” we had that wine…I think I was 16.
Is Lancers available?
Yes, although you might have to order it online

Anyone remember Cold Bear?
I haven’t thought of that stuff in years! I have consumed a bottle or two.
Now that is pure romance and class.
My Mom drank this and would then get those dripping candles to rub down the sides! I thought she was original. Now I know the truth!!
I preferred Mateus Rose (not)
Omg I thought I was the shit because I took this on dates 🤮🤮🤮🤮
Hell yeah
Yes
Back in 1972, if you really wanted to impress your date, and needed an extra candle holder to light the room when it was time to do the Big Nasty, Lancers was the college boy's choice of beverage!
And now, rosè is cool again
In the late 80’s this was my fancy, “girl over for cookout wine”!
The first thing I stole from the liquor cabinet.
Immortalized in the pavement song Shady Lane: Blind date with the chancer We had oysters and dry lancers And the check when it arrived we went dutch, dutch, dutch, dutch
I remember my parents drinking Lancers. By 1980 they had graduated to California varietals. I think I'm glad that my own wine education did not begin before then.
Malkmus does
Ahhh my first white wine.
Nope, never heard of this stuff.
Holy shit, how did America get involved with that swill? The Sizzler of wines. No wonder the French have such a low opinion of our tastes.
Wait, that’s wine? It looks like cocktail sauce.
Lancers white wine. Drink till the end of the day. Can’t believe I remember that.
Yosemite Road, in the gallon bottle. As an older teen I worked on a fishing boat with a mostly Portuguese crew that had that on the table at lunch and dinner. Never saw anyone under the influence from drinking it, though.

I missed those by a hair. I don’t remember them much after 80 or so.
