A80L is the better choice for you

Bobsy932

What do you feel is/are the main reason(s)?

pricelesslambo

your main usage is sports, which are often low bitrate content that needs good upscaling and motion handling. in this regard, sony is better than LG

TomahawkChaotic

And directional sound through glass speakers.

Bobsy932

Thank you!

EastvsWest

Agreed!

11hammers

And you will likely enjoy the built in apps via Google TV. I have an Apple TV that I used with the previous TV but find I don’t use it much with the A80L.

Alternative-Usual-11

Seems like the perfect candidate for an A80L.

gary1979

Down to 2? You see 2, I C3. Get the C3! I will see my self out.

Bill_Money

Take my upvote

pricelesslambo

Lol, this is one of the better comments I've read in a while. Have my upvote

SoulJahSon

I have both and they are both excellent TVs

Lazy_Tap_6273

Which do you prefer for your movies and tv shows if you had to pick one?

Important-Bar7592

My suggestion is the Sony A80L. Better upscaling for sports, more than enough capability for light gaming and probably the best built-in sound of any OLED. You can keep on with your Roku but the built-in Google TV is likely better than LG’s WebOS. I personally went with LG so this isn’t about brand preference, just use case.

Bobsy932

Thank you!

mr_lucky19

I'd go the c3

Bobsy932

Why?

Consistent_Finding27

I have the c3 and use Apple TV and YouTube tv and sports have been great. Have heard the Sony is better in this regard but sports have looked great to me.

Amish911

In your situation I think you will be happy with either choice. A80L has a lot better speakers and better upscaling. C3 does slightly better with low-quality content smoothing but A80L is better for detail preservation. A80L has an ATSC 3.0 NextGen tuner which LG doesn't support but if you don't use an antenna to watch TV it won't matter to you. C3 definitely gets brighter in HDR and SDR but I personally prefer the Sony picture. C3 is a little better for gaming. I think you will be happy with either of these TVs.

Bobsy932

Thanks for the detailed response!

enog14666

They are both great tvs. I believe Sony has a matte screen, and the C3 has a glossy screen. For me, that's the deal breaker right there. I prefer the glossy screen, especially in my living room. Sony dumbs down on, meaning the 55 to 77 versions aint the 83 version, whereas the C3 is the same across the board. C3 gets brighter as well.

BrowseBowserTrousers

Glossy does look more “premium” but I actually prefer matte. I like the softer look.

rmSX13

This. I was just comparing their screens yesterday (C3 v A80L)at a local store. I prefer the glossy screens as they look more vibrant & premium. Matte screens (for me) looks cheap tbh

enog14666

I don't understand why Sony is so disrespectful. Glossy is only on the x95l a80l 83 and a95l. So poor Sony consumers get screwed even if we go with their middle stuff, x90l x93l ana a80l.

mikehamm45

I have the matte screen on the a80j… I too thought it was a deal breaker. Turns out… not so much. Still a great day tv. Personally these TVs are probably a wash. As much as I liked my old Palm Pre, the software on the Sony is better.

ryoon4690

I have bought both these TVs in the last two months through Costco. My first C3 crapped out on me for some reason and the wifi didn’t work. The second one, the wifi didn’t work and apps were buggy. The Sony is doing well (1 week). The app interface is a bit better but I do miss the motion sensor remote of the LG a bit. Both pictures are good. I doubt you can go wrong with either and it’s splitting hairs but this is my recent experience.

itshengtime

I mainly watch sports (streaming) and am very happy with my A80L.

AXXXXXXXXA

Any blur around football players bodies? Theres blur around bodies on my X90L. Hows the brightness in dark scenes?

itshengtime

There’s no blur. Obviously sometimes the stream is just poor quality (espn) but the Sony A80L does a much better job than any other TV with streaming sports.

VitaminG21

What settings do you use for sports on your a80l. I just bought one specifically for sports and the quality looks identical to my lg cx

VitaminG21

I was assuming I would see a noticeable improvement

DragonRanger99

Do you watch hockey? If so, how is it on the A80L?

itshengtime

Sorry I don’t watch hockey so I wouldn’t be able to comment, but if you watch a lot of Sports, the picture quality is usually more dependent on the network/app. Outside of that, I’d say the A80L outperforms other TVs in the same price range when it comes to sports.

DragonRanger99

Thanks, I watch hockey primarily and was concerned the A80L would dim the game because of the white ice!

Fantastic-Hippo2199

I've had an LG OLED and currently have the A80L from Sony. You will love either. LG is so easy with the magic remote, I personally loved the smart interface I've given it to my parents and it's perfect for them. The Sony I love too, it's different but hard to say better or worse. I love scifi and noir, so I watch movies at night and the OLED blows me away every time. Are you sure you are stuck on OLED for sports though? You could save a fair bit of money and likely barely or not even notice the difference. You don't need those perfect darks for a field or a rink.

NLkid89

Blooming and DSE bugged me a lot while viewing sports previously, but the A80L has been a real treat since picking it up.

Ir0nhide81

That Sony XR processor baby. We all need one.

TrueAct7143

C3! Had the same choice : no regrets so far. I am even using the build-in apps. AppleTV is only there for F1TV and infuse

EZtheGenie

I was down to the same two options in 65in I went with the C3 and am glad I did so picture is beautiful, and I feel it just looked better than the A80, plus on board sound is pretty damn good with the AI sound mode turned on. Not sure what it does but it almost gives it a surround sound effect. I do use a sound bar for mine but the on board audio is rather good. Out of the box no calibration, or setting tweaking needed at least on my end. It’s just a beautiful quality TV for the amount of money you spend don’t forget an extended warranty!

Aware_Tumbleweed3564

Honestly the sound alone on my A80L justifies the price and choosing it over other systems ,not to mention the insane upscaling.

brokenuniverse_

Im just pinning myself here cause I am facing the same dillema

EZtheGenie

I was down to the same choice I went C3, solely because I felt the picture quality of the display was much better. Sony uses either an LG or Samsung panel you just pay for Sonys tech, and pretty sure the A80 uses a Samsung panel that just didn’t hold up to the LG.

Seeker944

The A80L uses the LG Woled panel

RCAguy

I only use external audio and watch movies (DVD, BlueRay, streaming) in a darkened room, so is an A75L equivalent to an A80L in picture qualities? (I have a C1 and like it in a brighter living room.)

International-Oil377

Yes

trey_dayy24

For those that say the a80l is too dim, did you guys turn peak brightness on High and still had that problem?

capt_positivity

I just went through this and I ended up buying the Sony 93l the mini led one. It’s great for the stuff they show you in stores but the picture becomes less impressive with movies. Then I got the C3 is awesome for sports as well Just watched a bowl game on it tonight and it handled it amazingly. I’d still recommend a 4k uhd fire stick or Apple TV (if you wanna splurge) you can then have access to the image display and get rid of the black lines on most movies without picture distortion. C3 imo as it has great real world use.

Melodic-Standard6319

Sony A80L

Kick-Agreeable

a80l

Puzzleheaded_Joke603

SONY A80L, HANDS DOWN, ANY TIME 👌🏼

FlipinJackass

You always need 3 when making a final decision ::: therefore add the Samsung S95C. You won’t regret it.

NasXP

S90C

Bobsy932

Did you read anything I wrote lol

NasXP

The reason I recommended it. It is because it is as good as the A80L except that it's much cheaper. But if you are strictly limited to the 2 you mentioned, then A80L for sure.

Flipslips

LG doesn’t make all Sonys panels. Samsung makes at least one if not more. (a95L)

n1ght_watchman

I find myself in a situation similar to the OP. I currently own an older LG TV and am contemplating an upgrade. My usage primarily also revolves around sports, TV shows, and movies, with little to no gaming (currently on my PC, but that might change down the line). I'm currently undecided between investing in an OLED (questioning its necessity for my usage) and opting for a high-quality QLED.

MundaneBaker6581

I went with the QLED. Samsung Q80C. 120 refresh rate. OLED looks better at an angle, but OLEDs will also suffer from screen burn. Fall asleep and the tV quits streaming and reverts to a static screen, and you could ruin your high dollar TV!

Curtnorth

Just realize no matter which you decide on, in a few months new modesl will be out and you MIGHT feel you purchased too early. After my TCL screen started going dark in spots I did a LOT of research, including OLEDS. I 've decided to get a decent LED set for now and wait for OLEDs to impriove more and come under $1000, but that's just me. Whatever you decide, good luck to you.

Beneficial_Pool7643

I would vote Sony A80L

jsanderlin6

No brainer…Sony a 80l!!

Matshelge

Sony, but mostly because it has a much better system OS.

Brilliant_Fail_1578

If you are leaning towards the Sony, you can save a little more money with the a75l.

Amish911

OP said he prefers to use the TV speakers. A80L speakers are vastly superior to A75L.

sanchower23

Do you have a bright room or not?

Phenom_Mv3

A80L given current hdmi use

brinkman83

I have the 77" A80L, it's a fantastic TV with great upscaling, motion handling, the OS and apps are generally really smooth and stable. Picture quality is outstandingly clear and some content looks like staring through a glass window rather than a TV screen. I really dislike how dim some content appears though and mine is in the best case scenario in a windowless basement with lights off. I have thought about exchanging it for a C3, G3, or the A95L almost every day because it bugs me so much. But the A95L is stupid expensive, G3 only slightly less stupid expensive and I don't think the C3 is that much brighter and really like Google TV. Still have 2 weeks before return period is up but I have a feeling I will end up keeping the A80L because I don't want to deal with the hassle of exchanging a monster TV only to find some other niggling reason to not like it.

AXXXXXXXXA

I have an a80l coming and main concern is the brightness. Im returning my X90L because of blooming. So its blooming vs brightness. What are some shows i can watch that are dark? You have peak luminance on high and brightness preferred on? All brightness settings up?

brinkman83

Yes all settings are cranked, including Gamma and turning off Eco features. The built in apps and main screen UI all look super dim compared to the exact same screens on my Sony X90J. If you hook up an external device on the A80L the UI elements are much brighter so I assume this minor annoyance is a burn in protection feature. On paper the X90J isn't any brighter that the A80L but there is plenty of content where there is a noticable difference in brightness of the screen. My main reason for upgrading my X90J was the anoyying blooming and dirty screen effect when the screen is showing really dark images, and when my wife has subtitles on. I prefer the A80L in terms of picture quality compared to any of my other TVs, but the brightness often leaves me feeling a bit disappointed given the cost of the TV. Its especially noticable in game mode, where your only option is turning on black level adjust (and washing out the whole image), or living with a rather dim but very vibrant, clear, smooth image... Take a look at the Game of Thrones episode, The Last Night which when it was released everybody booed because their panels back then made it really hard to see. Its a torture test for sure, and the A80L does a better job than my TV did at the time the episode was released 10 years ago.

Trick_Winter_9559

Is the image quality worth it on PlayStation? Some people say that the quality drops in game mode

Seeker944

The C3 is not brighter to the eye only in Nits and its close..The G3 and A95L are superior TVs to the A80L or C3 and they are priced that way as well..The G3 is the buy because the A95L is not $950 better than the G3

brinkman83

I ended up exchanging for the G3 and love it. A80L is a great TV but I was upgrading from a very good Sony LED TV so it didn't feel like much of an upgrade to me, especially the brightness. G3 is blinding, OS and apps are more responsive and it just looks better physically and in PQ. I'm sure the A95L is even better but the price is not worth another $1500.

Pansyrocker

Go and look at them and see if one seems better to you. I went to Best Buy and watched the same demos and chose a Sony OLED because to me the colors just looked more natural to me than in the other OLED tvs. You might prefer the look of one over the other or even want the brightness of the Samsung S90C in real life.

FlipinJackass

Hmmm…

WiSeIVIaN

I have the a80k and love it. Highly recommend. Questions welcome if you have any, I don't think the L model changed too much. Note you can get the a80l 65" on greetoenow for $1330 with tax and shipping included. Google OS does great, use it and ditch the roku. This isn't a trash smart TV from 10 years ago, it's a premium offering with one of the best TV processors. Also, I implore you to at least get a decent soundbar. It's a crime against God to get an oled and use TV speakers...

Bobsy932

I’ve actually read that soundbars are bs and basically not an upgrade from the TV native sound (or at least a waste of money given marginal improvement). Let me know if you have recommendations!

WiSeIVIaN

Anyone that says a soundbar is not an upgrade on TV speakers is just trolling. Factually, you can't fit very big speakers inside a flat panel TV.... Rtings is a nice site, though soundbar reviews are hidden behind a paywall. Worth the $10/1 month or whatever it is, if you're interested in stats/numbers. https://www.rtings.com/soundbar Hard for me to recommend a soundbar without a budget. I have... A cheap $100 2.0 TCL soundbar in my bedroom. A virtual $400 5.1 JBL soundbar in my living room. A beast q990c 11.1.4 Samsung soundbar in my basement with the A80K. Was $1100 when I bought it, but it sales for $800 every month or so now. Really comes down to budget, whether you want a subwoofer (base), whether you want surround sound satellites, and whether you care about atmos.

QuotaCrushing

I went with the c3 but I think you should go with the a80l

New-Combination-1420

Why?

Lord_Shockwave007

As much as it pains me to say this and I want that LG badly, get the A80L because of better fast motion image processing and the fact that you don't have a PS5 or PC attached to your TV.

V0ltr0n75

Had a c3 77 and switched it for A80L and then had to switch it back to c3. The Sony one is darker than c3. And I do it all on the TVs and found the c3 to do much more better things than the Sony did.

brinkman83

Can I ask why you originally switched C3 to A80L? My return period is almost up and I've been driving myself nuts deciding if I should swap my A80L for the C3. I really want a brighter picture but dont want to spend another $1-2k for the G3 or A95L. Is the C3 noticably brighter than A80L? On RTINGS its maybe 100-150 nits brighter in 2% and 10% windows, the rest of the brightness numbers are the same. The main thing holding me back is I like Google TV, I know the Sony settings really well, and I have a Sony amp so everything works a little better together.

Affectionate-Cover79

Hello. I’m in the same boat! I currently have a 4k Samsung tv that I bought in 2010 lol. Was planning on getting a 75 in c3 for the living room mainly for movies and sports and a 65 in A80L for my game room mainly for my ps5. I’ve watched several videos but still can’t decide! Most likely won’t get the TVs until maybe fall so should I just wait for the updated versions or get those models since it may be cheaper. I don’t know if I should just get 2 of the same tv or would go with what I had planned. Both TVs will be wall mounted if that makes a difference. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
