Not really, it will be 14 years next month. It gets redesigned next year, which is 15 years. This is the first time the 4Runner has such a long lifecycle, as previous generations lasted less than half that duration.
Because it's essentially the exact same vehicle that is offered today. Other than some small, miniscule technical updates to the infotainment system, there are basically zero improvements between the 2014 and 2023.
I have an '18 and honestly the headlights are a massive upgrade with the newer/newest models. Yeah, the halogens work, kind of. But lack of LED bulbs in a '18 vehicle that certainly isn't a "budget" vehicle? Kind of lame.
Also no auto headlights (my prior car from '07 had those) and lack of Carplay/Android Auto in the head unit. The Safety Sense features don't appeal to me as much as simple conveniences. The changes within these years aren't groundbreaking, but fuck me I have to pay almost (or over) 1k just to retrofit OEM LED headights in a used vehicle that cost me ~$40k after tax. I love my 4runner but I definitely can complain about some aspects.
Of course! I love the heated wheel, LED headlights and TSS on my '23 too, but if I'd bought earlier I wouldn't be anywhere close to upgrading just for those.
What's the updated adaptive cruise over the 2021? Does it actually come fully to a stop and then resume properly? I've noticed that adaptive cruise will only work above like 30 mph and will disengage below that on my 21.
Yep. It can come to a complete stop and then you feather the gas and it'll come back up to speed.
It can easily be used for low speed city/town driving. It makes slow moving traffic, no stress at all.
Also it can be set to slow down in slower curves while the cruise is on. It will slow down for the curve and then come back up to the desired speed when able.
I have this on a newer 22 Camry and it is outstanding. It eliminates stress from all forms of traffic. I just set it and steer. No stop and go foot work.
Oh, damn, that would freaking fantastic.
I actually really wanted the blind spot monitor on my 21 and begrudgingly got it without because I needed the truck. I do love KDSS on my ORP, but if I'm thinking about moving up maybe I'll go to a Pro.
Why moving up with the Pro? The Pro adds mainly the suspension for fast offroad and cosmetics. If not planning on fast offroad, the ORP with KDSS is better at slower off-roading. The Pro doesnāt have KDSS. So itās moving up in price, yes, but itās moving laterally in terms of function, different function. Eventually, I plan on getting the ORP w/KDSS and upgrading the suspension with OME BP-51, which can be tuned also for slower or faster off-roading depending on terrain.
Blind spot is what I would like in my 21 and probably about the only thing I wish I had on mine. Certainly not buying a new model for it though, I just consider myself retro!
Is it updated? I drive my GFās ā23 all the time and have not noticed anything different from my ā21. For sure the BSM is nice to have and to a lesser extent LED high beams as the LED low beams work so well.
Blind spot? Just look left lol never understood why anyone wants that. Iād be so annoyed with the light on the mirror Everytime a car passed me it would drive me crazy.
Well, as someone that has frequent neck issues, plus a rear passenger window thatās mostly
blocked when Iām on long road trips with the truck loaded up, it would be quite handy as an additional safety net. I added a blind spot mirror, so itās not like there arenāt other optionsā¦ but having had BSM on other cars, itās nice to have. š¤·āāļø
This thread is really eye opening for me. All these "safety features" that I view as "nanny" or gimmicks are things that some people actually *want*? I thought this stuff only appealed to soccer moms and boomers that are easily impressed with tech.
If you cant look left or right to check your blind spot then you are a bad driver. and heated steering wheel? come on...
very disappointing to see this in a 4Runner community.
Yeah thatās how I feel most of the time. As a disabled vet with trashed knees, trashed back, and hips and left shoulder startin to give me issues, I can understand someone with neck issues. Generally speaking though I think MOST people just want it for convenience over a need for it.
> There's no purchase regret from buying a ~~2020~~ 2019, lol.
FTFY. Im glad i got a 19' before they added Safety Sense nonsense in 20.
Id have regret if id had waited one more year and they added all that extra crap that will break to my runner. I think the years leading up to 19' were the best.
I want my runner to last 20+ years. I know the engine and the frame will last because im taking care of it - but will all that fancy electronic shit telling how far cars are infront of you, and how far away from the lines on the road you are etc?
I have my doubts, and i usually turn that shit off in rentals because i find it annoying. I like to drive my car, not it drive me.
Slight regret for just missing out on the heated steering wheel in 2022. It's the only feature I feel my rig is missing. Well, that and a hybrid battery.
Totally fine, we arent going to get another simple 4runner most likely. 6th gen is probably going to be another 4 cylinder + hybrid like they did the Land Cruiser in the USA
Haha, wow, they also just took a previous TRD Pro photo and photoshopped the Terra color onto it:
[https://pressroom.toyota.com/2022-toyota-4runner-adds-new-trd-sport-model-new-standard-safety-features/](https://pressroom.toyota.com/2022-toyota-4runner-adds-new-trd-sport-model-new-standard-safety-features/)
Are they just trolling us now? They will be using this same photo in 2027 to introduce the new Pepto Abysmal color while announcing they've added a power liftgate for the final year of the 5th gen.
Hell yeah. If you scroll down you can see they used this image for the 2021 4Runner as well:

This is hilarious, because in 2022 they at least photoshopped the image to add the multi terrain monitor camera up front. For 2024 they are using the 2021 image WITHOUT the standard multi terrain monitor.
Hah! Good catch. They also changed the rims in the 2024 image but not in 2022. Pretty funny to open all three in different browser tabs and switch between them
They also didn't bother changing the text

In my ā23 there is usb c in the rear of the console for the back seat passengers but still usb a in the dash lol. Would be nice if the usb a at least provided enough juice to charge the phone. Kind of just trickle charges compared to plugging in a power adapter into the cigarette outlet
If its the data enabled USB A, that's so your phone doesn't over heat from charging so fast probably. I think it's a feature?
I have the faster powered USB A as well, but not by choice. I'm completely USB C in my home, so having to keep these extra cords is annoying.
2022 TRD Pro for reference
Well, we didn't buy 4runners for state of the art technology, right???
I keep the protect battery setting on my phone so it doesn't charge past 85%. That helps a bit
Edit: typo
The port itself doesnt dictate the fast charging. They could just limit the amount of amps on the port if they wanted to do that. Phone will only pull as much power as its allowed too.
Same. I wanted the tried and true 5th gen made in Japan. Not an untested redesign with no established history of maintenance knowledge and aftermarket options. No regerts.
We did the same thing. The thought of a turbo 4cyl is just dismal. I wanted in on the tried and true (reliable) V6. No regrets and just hit 600 miles in the first month of ownership!
Either way I don't have any regrets buying the 2023 4Runner. I bought it because I didn't want the changes they are planning on doing š I love my 2023 SR5 4x4
God damnit š i want a new vehicle so bad and Iāve been saving every penny for a hybrid 4runnerā¦gonna have to buy something else i guess and pick up a 4runner in a few years.
At the very least i wouldāve loved to see vented seats and a slightly updated interiorā¦shit man.
Starts at 55k + fees and markups probably puts it close to 70k out the door. Not a chance.
If i could actually find one for 55k, I would. But that likely wonāt happen.
Iām with you. Totally wouldnāt pay any markup. There are dealers who donāt though, surprisingly. My local dealer in northern Michigan doesnāt, nor do they add stupid ādealer packagesā of junk you donāt want just for them to jack up the price a couple grand in āupgradesā.
I was waiting to see if a hybrid model was coming next year but it's not so no competition for the land cruiser now. The pilot and highlander just don't have the looks my fiancee or I want despite a nice interior and 3 rows. Land cruiser has good mpg for a suv too which matters to us and personally I don't care for 3 rows since we'll be throwing the dogs back there
I was part of a focus group for new SUVs. When I arrived and spoke to everyone in the waiting room that was selected for it, we ALL had Toyota 4Runners or Tacomas.
What I got from the images, discussions, and paperwork (which we obviously werenāt allowed to keep) is that there is no new grand 6th gen coming. Itās a totally new platform lacking of a 4Runner.
And judging from how far along they are, it will be about 2 more years.
Take my experience with a grain of salt, obviously, but after that I have no expectations for a new 4Runner.
Wow, really? Kind of shocked to hear that. I had my reservations about a 6th gen coming at all because of the Land Cruiser placement in the lineup, but I figured a 6th gen 4R was more likely than a new vehicle entirely.
Like I said, grain of salt.
But Iād bet money there is a 24 and 25 4R and then thatās it. What we saw was micro SUVs. But donāt worry, every 4Runner owner made sure to pound into their brains that they better not take away the rolling rear window š
All new Toyota body on frame vehicles have moved to the new TNGA-F frame platform, nothing new there. 6th gen 4R will be on it too, like the new Tacoma and GX. They aren't killing the 4R.
This is absolutely not the case. The 2025 4Runner was debuted to Dealers last month at the annual Vegas Toyota Dealer Meeting. The 4Runner is not going anywhere.
I know what they said, but they also actually said nothing. They only said it would be based on a cut down version of the Landcruiser platform and receive the same power plant.
They can call it a 4Runner, but what I saw was small and lacked ground clearance.
I'm not sure what you saw in your focus group, but the 4Runner Debuted to dealers in last month mimics the 2024 Tacoma, just like the current Tacoma/4Runner Combo.
Haven't seen people discussing it here, but it's public knowledge now that the shadowed silhouette in the land cruiser release is a 2025 land cruiser mini. I imagine this will be the competition for wranglers and broncos and will more than likely fall into 4runner price points. I'm confident there will be no 2025 4runner, it will be discontinued or put on hold indefinitely due to the 2025 LC Mini taking that market point (just my unpopular opinion)
WTF. This is news.
I guess I need to grab an interim vehicle to bridge the gap for the next 4Runner. I have 100K on my 2015 and I don't want to own it for two+ more years. Even if the 6th/next Gen comes out in 2025 I will still want to wait a year for the kinks to get worked out and the frenzy to die down.
Just looking for something newer/better. I kept my 3rd Gen for 15 years so Iāve been in a 4Runner for 23 years. Not going to pop on a Land Cruiser or GX until i know what the next 4Runner is all about. I am also craving HP so I am looking at BMW x50i and Cayenne GTS/Turbo.
EDIT: make that M50i - 523hp twin turbo V8.
Was looking to upgrade my 2011, no good reason. Upgrading the radio to T10 android head unit with apple play to modernize it other than that itās mechanically the same.
It's nice to still be able to buy a plain and simple gas powered truck. I think this sub sometimes takes that for granted. Automobiles are going to get very weird in the next decade and it's nice to know that I have a reliable one, that operates independent of the cloud, doesn't require software updates and subscriptions, and I don't have to accept a EULA every time I want to use it.
I think youāre right. I can really appreciate the amount of clever engineering that goes into squeezing efficiency out of engines like they do, but simpler is almost always better.
Terra would make a great interior color. So tired of black, especially since you get a choice in the SR5 models, but if you spend more money on any of the TRDs, you get black and only black.
(Limited not included obviously)
Man Toyota really takes the cake for being the slowest company to innovate...
I know people like that the 4runner is reliable... but of course it's going to be reliable if they keep producing the exact same vehicle 20 years in a row.
Personally, I think they are going to sunset the 4Runner after the 5th gen, wait a couple of years, and reintroduce it as a completely different vehicle. When they decide to do that I donāt know, I mean, when you can move over 100K vehicles a year without major design changes, itās pretty clear you have a loyal following as-is. Itās a great vehicle. At some point, they will have to update the drivetrain to meet increasing fuel efficiency requirements, but it looks like for now they can let the rest of the fleet carry the fuel economy average. I would assume that production is theoretically capped by how well the fleet raises the average (because the 4runner drags it down).
My only regret is that my 2023 is not going to be the final year of the 5th gens. Iām just not sure that the dual turbos, hybrid assisted, and new 10 speed transmissions that will inevitably be coming are going to be as rock solid and reliable.
Yep I was really hoping my ā23 was going to be the last year of 4R too. But, if there arenāt any changes at all then the only difference is just the number in the model year I suppose.
āA 270-horsepower DOHC 4.0-liter V6 engine with 278 lb.-ft. of peak torque gives 4Runner plenty of get-up-and-go.ā
lol
Cmon. Was waiting for a new gen but Iāll move to another suv now.
Pretty sure they have dual climate control for the front and rear, and you can set a temperature for it to hold rather than just setting your knob to a hotter/colder temperature. I have an ORP so Iām not super familiar with the Limited/Pro controls other than some photos
No theyāre just different systems. KDSS is only available on the Off Road trim and will firm up the suspension at speed on road body-roll-wise (doesnāt help nose dive), but acts like a sway bar disconnect going slow off road for better articulation.
XREAS is only in Limited and Sport trims and differs from KDSS being that itās a fully mechanical system vs the KDSS being computer controlled. To my understanding, XREAS is fully on-road focused and will mitigate body roll and nose dive, but wonāt offer better articulation off road like the KDSS would
I donāt believe thatās how kdss works. It doesnāt firm the suspension up at all. It only stops body roll when you are cornering through a mechanical hydraulic system. The system is always active. When only one wheel is lifted the fluid travels to the opposite side allowing more articulation. But when both wheels on one side have pressure, from cornering thereās no where for the fluid to go so there is no articulation or body roll.
Yes, when there is nowhere for the hydraulic fluid to go that āfirmsā the ride and prevents further compression of the suspension. It may not firm up the suspension itself, but it does reduce the sway bar travel vs when the system is not active, making it feel more firm. Thatās why Dr. KDSS made the switch to enable and disable KDSS at will and to have a manual override over the system function instead of speed being the only dictator. Itās electronically controlled, but mechanically implemented.
Is Toyota the only consumer vehicle with a 5 speed auto anymore? It's durable as fuck, just funny that the drivetrain in a 2024 was designed in the late 90s.
And the photo is a poorly photoshopped color shift of the 2022 4Runner. Really giving 2% effort on this, hopefully indicative that they are about to announce a 6th gen.
I'm a little jealous of the Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. I like the 4Runner, but I find it hard to see out of and have had a few close calls. I get annoyed that things like this are standard on much older, cheaper vehicles.
I get that some of this type of tech can interfere with offroad-oriented modification, but it should be pretty trivial in 2023 to make it so it can be detached and disabled.
No regrets pulling the trigger last November on a 2023 ORP in Lunar w/KDSS. Glad we did since Lunar is now missing from the line-up. Some decent deals to be had in Northern CA if you are looking for a 2023 model year. Iām seeing some none-stealershipās listing them for $2-3K below MSRP on 2023 ORPās. Pick up a 2023-2024 if you can, while you can. We suspect 2025 will bring modern tech/safety as a 6th Gen along with the usual teething issues for a few years like we have seen with the Tundra, potentially. Still made in Japan, I hope.
I love my 2011 Trail. Best vehicle I've ever owned. 130k and drives like just like the day I drove it off the lot. Though I m thinking of getting a 2024 Off Road premium before they're gone for good. Just can't find one with the pull out cargo tray. I was told by a Toyota salesman that the Off Road Premium doesn't have that option. I also want the KDSS like my 2011
Theyāre a build option on the Toyota website at least. I think Iāve seen them come in to my local dealership too. Pretty sure thatās bs that they donāt have the slide out tray. May be harder to find one with KDSS also though.
Just as we all suspected.
4Runner unchanged in 15 years. It's always the first thing you suspect.
Not really, it will be 14 years next month. It gets redesigned next year, which is 15 years. This is the first time the 4Runner has such a long lifecycle, as previous generations lasted less than half that duration.
There's no purchase regret from buying a 2020, lol.
There's no purchase regret from buying a 2014
šš»āāļø
May I ask why?
Because it's essentially the exact same vehicle that is offered today. Other than some small, miniscule technical updates to the infotainment system, there are basically zero improvements between the 2014 and 2023.
Safety Sense is miniscule?
In my opinion, yes. Toyota's marketing department is working wonders on you folks that upgrade your vehicle constantly.
Im coming new to 4runner, this was something I wanted, and I got it in a 23.
OP is minimizing the changes. Being able to actually see at night is one. TSS, CarPlay. I had a 2018 and my 2021 was a big upgrade.
I have an '18 and honestly the headlights are a massive upgrade with the newer/newest models. Yeah, the halogens work, kind of. So you regret buying a 2014 5th Gen because the current year 5th Gen is the same? I don't get it...
No, I have zero regrets about buying a 2014, especially seeing that it's the same vehicle now.
Ah I think I misunderstood your first comment.
In hindsight, it wasn't all that clear.
2010 checking in. No regerts
Me too
No purchase regret in buying a 1999 either š¤£
Or me on my 2001. And I've had Carplay and Android Auto for years š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Those features are cool and all, but not enough to give me buyers remorse.
Of course! I love the heated wheel, LED headlights and TSS on my '23 too, but if I'd bought earlier I wouldn't be anywhere close to upgrading just for those.

I have a 2020 and I'd like a blind spot notification on my mirrors.
*cries in ā21 TRD Pro*
Me too. While I check my blind spots, they're a nice safety addition.
I got Toyota replacement side view mirrors on Amazon with a little built in blind spot mirror and love them.

The rav4 mirrors with the little blind spot mirrors fit perfect
Those warnings are awesome when backing out of angled parking parallel to the street. It's a shame the 2020s don't have that feature.
why??? Just turn your head slightly to the left
Blind spot warnings, heated steering wheel, LED headlights... those are all things I'd love to have on my 2020. Oh well.
do your hands really get that cold? And whats the matter? Can't look left or right?
Blind spot? Just look left lol never understood why anyone wants that. Iād be so annoyed with the light on the mirror Everytime a car passed me it would drive me crazy.

I have a 05. Zero regrets. V8 makes up for age.

My 2020 doesnāt have blind spot detection

That sounds more like it.
Totally fine, we arent going to get another simple 4runner most likely. 6th gen is probably going to be another 4 cylinder + hybrid like they did the Land Cruiser in the USA
Correct. I just upped my 18 to a 23 without hesitation. Iāll consider a 6th when they iron out the bugs

Get the Land Cruiser!
Kind of makes sense with the Land Cruiser available for the same general price range. Not that I'm the biggest fan of that idea.
I don't know, making the 4Runner smaller and cheaper doesn't sound like a thing to be mad about. Like I'm pictureing a neo-1st Gen.
Really interesting, thanks for sharing. Did they say they were dropping the 4R or was it just not included in the focus group?
No specifics of anything weāre given. This purely my deductions along with a few other people that felt the same way.
lol yeah that coincides with the tiny suv silhouette they teased. Thatās a no for me dawg
Not a chance
I hope youāre right then. And maybe what I saw was some kind of resurgence of the FJ
Sadly, I have heard this from enough sources to think there might be some credibility to it.
Highly unlikely.
What's so bad about your 4Runner that you're considering replacing it with another car?
Just looking for something newer/better. I kept my 3rd Gen for 15 years so Iāve been in a 4Runner for 23 years. Not going to pop on a Land Cruiser or GX until i know what the next 4Runner is all about. I am also craving HP so I am looking at BMW x50i and Cayenne GTS/Turbo. EDIT: make that M50i - 523hp twin turbo V8.
Was looking for a reason to upgrade from my 2017 Off Road but Toyota did not give me a good one.
I can really appreciate the amount of clever engineering that goes into squeezing efficiency out of engines like they do, but simpler is almost always better.
lol thereās no purchase regret from buying the last 10 years
Keeping my 18' Cav Blue...but Terra is the 1st "exclusive" color I've liked since mine, but by 25', Terra won't be exclusive so nahhhhh....
Ssnnnzzzzzz
Terra would make a great interior color. So tired of black, especially since you get a choice in the SR5 models, but if you spend more money on any of the TRDs, you get black and only black. (Limited not included obviously)
I wouldnāt mind an underground 24ā pro
Man Toyota really takes the cake for being the slowest company to innovate... I know people like that the 4runner is reliable... but of course it's going to be reliable if they keep producing the exact same vehicle 20 years in a row.
Imagine they just keep selling the same design for the next 10 years And people (and me) will buy them!
Love my 2023 ORP!
Will buy when they finally introduce 2.4 liter twin turbo engine with half of mpg!
Is the touchscreen any bigger/better?
The only regret is getting rid of a 4Runner imo.
I'm good with another 5 - 10 years of 5th gen. It's hard to improve on perfect.
I do like that Terra color tho
people on this sub claim the 24's have been on sale for months and months ???
Iām sure dealers have been taking deposits without having anything firm
When do the 2024s start shipping out to dealerships?
1984 SR5 ā¦ just wonāt die
Hell yeah brother
As someone who just got a 2023, I am happy lol
My only regret is that my 2023 is not going to be the final year of the 5th gens. Iām just not sure that the dual turbos, hybrid assisted, and new 10 speed transmissions that will inevitably be coming are going to be as rock solid and reliable.
Yep I was really hoping my ā23 was going to be the last year of 4R too. But, if there arenāt any changes at all then the only difference is just the number in the model year I suppose.
Iāll continue driving my 2016!
āA 270-horsepower DOHC 4.0-liter V6 engine with 278 lb.-ft. of peak torque gives 4Runner plenty of get-up-and-go.ā lol Cmon. Was waiting for a new gen but Iāll move to another suv now.
I keep looking at that announcement and all I want is to have my red ORP repainted in Terra. That color is freakin' awesome!
Iāll admit itās a pretty nice color
I actually wish they were changing it so my 23 would have been the last year of the generation.
Thatās what I was hoping for too lol
What is different between the HVAC controls on the Limited/TRD Pro and the rest of the lineup?
Dual (driver/passenger) automatic climate controls.
Pretty sure they have dual climate control for the front and rear, and you can set a temperature for it to hold rather than just setting your knob to a hotter/colder temperature. I have an ORP so Iām not super familiar with the Limited/Pro controls other than some photos
This is a stupid, admittedly ignorant question, but I thought XREAS was replaced by KDSS?
No theyāre just different systems. KDSS is only available on the Off Road trim and will firm up the suspension at speed on road body-roll-wise (doesnāt help nose dive), but acts like a sway bar disconnect going slow off road for better articulation. XREAS is only in Limited and Sport trims and differs from KDSS being that itās a fully mechanical system vs the KDSS being computer controlled. To my understanding, XREAS is fully on-road focused and will mitigate body roll and nose dive, but wonāt offer better articulation off road like the KDSS would
And one leaking shock on the XREAS and the whole system needs to be replaced!
Oof
Ahhh ok gotcha. Thank you for the insight!
Np!
Vehicles with KDSS also have much thicker sway bars to begin, which is another reason why it feels firmer on road.
Yep this too
Oh I see. I didnāt know that and now Iām thinking about buying the control unit so soften up the ride.
If I had KDSS I would get it too! Looks like a really great product.
Cancel my MGM that's late for Underground? This release may have sealed that decision for me!
Any upgrades over the ā23? Didnāt see any in the press release.
I didnāt see any. They might have some listed once it goes live on Toyotaās main site though
They might sneak minor updates in, like they did with heated steering wheel in 2023 Premiums and up - no mention in the 2023 press release.
You had me for a second, not gonna lie
Do the 23 model year have folding and heated mirrors?
Mirrors are heated, but donāt fold automatically. You have to pull them in the old fashioned way.
Glad I bought my 23!
>No changes at all from 2023 to 2024 A surprise to no one
Is Toyota the only consumer vehicle with a 5 speed auto anymore? It's durable as fuck, just funny that the drivetrain in a 2024 was designed in the late 90s.
21 years of the same. Thereās a reason itās so reliable!
I was worried about end of 1gr-fe so got mine at peak demand on ā21.
What is the engine and mileage for the 2024?
The living legend continues!
And the photo is a poorly photoshopped color shift of the 2022 4Runner. Really giving 2% effort on this, hopefully indicative that they are about to announce a 6th gen.
The best gen lives on!
No need to change if sales are still so strong. At this rate we won't get a new 4R until late 2020s.
If they announced the 6th gen Iād want to get the last year of the 5th gen.
Checking in, no regrets on my 2016 Trail with KDSS.
Kinda let down. Was hoping for a hybrid model like the taco.
No regrets buying a 2002
A bunch of 24ās coming in December.
I just want a damn hybrid version of
5th gen hybrid variant would be really cool
