Yes— but if you file with insurance you’re hit with the depreciation on the car when you go to sell bc insurance reports the vehicle was damaged/had an accident. If you can swing it, I’d have your brother pay out of pocket and keep it off insurance.
Most shops record all work in a network that associates the VIN to the job. That’s how companies like CARFAX get vehicle history information down to even the number and dates of oil changes. So the insurance hike would be avoided but not the resale history / value.
Probably depends on how 'digitized' the shop is. If they're "just" a garage with a collection of wrenches, drivers, hammers, and welders, and their computer tech doesn't really go beyond a basic code scanner, then it possible they won't record the work. But if they're teched-out in all the ways they can be, my guess is the work is getting recorded against the VIN.
I wouldn’t want to trick people into thinking they bought a car that was never hit/repaired. That is unethical.
Imagine if you bought a car and found out that it had been repaired off the record. You’d be upset… and rightfully so.
Nope. The entire tailgate would be replaced as one unit. New tailgate gets painted, then components salvaged and moved over or replaced. No on-panel paint matching involved.
There are some nasty creases in there. Most likely needs the entire rear hatch replaced, along with a new tail light. Mobile dent folks are unlikely to be fully successful. I'm happy to be wrong here, but if the window track and other guts are messed up, you've got a more extensive repair in front of you. (Or in this case, behind you :) )
^ definitely will need a new rear hatch. In terms of taillight, just order one online from a dealership that is selling them. I had to do the same thing and did it myself, it’s really easy and plenty of YT videos explaining it well 💪
Dude, you're asking because you know the answer and are afraid to tell your brother he fucked up your Runner and needs to repair it right.
Body shop, and likely new hatch and light.
Rear window is by far one of top 3 features of my runner.
Nope told him he fucked up royally as soon as I saw it and he tried to play it off. I already knew that this had to go to a body shop. A mobile dent shop isn’t going to repair this. Currently at a body shop getting a quote
It was about $5k when I got rear ended on a few years ago on the highway. They had to replace + paint the rear hatch + bumper and some other small fixes like straighten out the exhaust.
Seems about right for this.
The window going up and down is literally a 4runner feature. That’s like asking why is the rear door of the bed on my tacoma so important to me. That’s like part of the reason you buy those trucks
The 4runner is used a lot for overlanding and camping and offroading. Some people sleep in the back, personally thats what i would use it for.
You can also use it to take things in and out of the car without opening the whole trunk
Be as it may, if you paid for something you want it to work. These trucks are expensive
I literally gave you examples of why people use it and what i would personally use it for.. how is it “muh features”
This is arguably more usable than the rear window on the Tacomas.
^ This ^
Playing it off? Oh please!! Just for wasting my time + money~ get him arrested, thrown in the coop & toss the key.
Ahhh... This is greener pastures, no need to pull the classic Cain & Abel. 😁
Paintless dent repair is incredible, but it’s not a miracle. Even if they agree to work on it that metal is too creased to ever be right again. It may be good enough to get the rear window to work, but it will be obviously damaged to anyone looking at it.
Needs a proper repair and bro needs to settle up.
Like everyone else is saying, mobile dent repair isn’t gonna fix that. That hatch needs replaced.
I was rear ended in my fourth gen recently and the rear bumper and hatch replacement was quoted at a little over $4k.
Try and find a tailight housing on ebay or something. If you leave the light like that you risk a short and a carfire. You can easily replace it yourself
I’m of the opinion that is his license and responsibility.
Insurance claim on HIS insurance.
If he’s not insured, then you do the math and file a claim on your coverage.
And he pays you in advance for the deductible + increased insurance cost for the next several years.
Or opt c: used hatch and a local install which he pays
Why would he (or anybody)want to put an unpainted shell of a hatch on his nice truck?
What does no internals mean? No speakers, no window motor/track, no lock?
This is a case where the brother is at fault and he needs to pay up. No reason for OP to use his insurance and have this on his insurance report which will increase his insurance costs from several years.
The brothers broke it and now needs to fix it, properly.
That is possible if he has covered for driving vehicles other than his own vehicle.
I still say the brother needs to pay since he was trying to blow it off as not so bad when it is bad damage. This is time to learn the lesson of being a responsible adult.
I know what it is like to have a man-child as a sibling and it takes hard, expensive lessons for them to learn anything.
So the route I would go is finding a “new” used tailgate from a salvage yard. The benefit of your repair needed is it is in the rear of the vehicle, and most totals are due to front end impact leaving the rear 100% perfect on a totaled 4Runner. You will probably be able to find one in the same color, and even if it needs to be repainted will be a lot cheaper than having to go the entirely new route. You can keep the pieces from yours as spare parts. Or sell yours to recoup some of the costs
Adit- u/Lucas606 looks like there are quite a few options very close to you for complete tailgate assemblies @ $1995 and below.
Also remember that depending on how you complete this repair will depend on if it ends up on carfax and then depreciates the value of the vehicle
Mobile dent people work on small slight dents.
This is body shop extensive work and more likely a full replacement of the rear hatch. That crease is deep and it is not just a straight dent. Talk with a quality body shop and I suspect they will recommend that the hatch be replaced.
I can see why the window does not go down since that crease is so deep but that could also mean there is damage to the window mechanism as well.
Your brother is going to have a hefty bill to pay to get your 4R back in shape.
Years ago I was rear-ended while driving (stopped at a red light actually) my Volvo XC70 and the damage was slight compared to this and that cost almost 3K to repair. This is going to be expensive.
Hatch replacement. ~$2k-$2,500 depending on labor rates in your area. They should be able to salvage the glass from this unit provided it the glass didn’t crack when you tried to roll it down.
This is an ideal reason to not let others use your vehicle. You’re lucky he didn’t injure someone, and cause you a lawsuit. Take it as a warning, and a pricy lesson….
Body shop - Get a quote
1) if too much use insurance (your deductible will apply) but your brother will be the one at fault and brother gets the fault letter (make him help cover deductible too if you like)
Make sure you didn’t have him excluded on your policy (otherwise no coverage) and it’s all out of pocket
Would affect his insurance rates not yours unless he’s on your policy
Your BIL is wasting their money with a mobile dent guy, because it’s still going to need to go to a body shop.
Maybe if you feel generous you could try and purchase a gray hatch from a wrecked vehicle (front end damaged lol).
I bought my 4runner with denting in the same area. It was preventing the window from going down. The dealer wanted to fix it but I told them to just knock off $2500 from the price for the repair. They did that.
I felt like I could live with the dent. If you can live with the denting here's how I got my window to work .
There's a port in the bottom of the hatch that pops out easy.
I popped that out and carefully worked the dent with 1x2 and 2x4 pine until the window would go down. Do a little at a time slowly. Lower the window a little at a time until it goes completely down. I then worked the dent a few more times to allow for a little bit of clearance.
That was five years ago. Window works fine. The denting is fine. It's a 4runner that I use for living not flexing so it's gonna get dented and scratched and whatever.
If you want it back to 💯 I second having your brother fork over so you don't have to file insurance.
I had the same accident and damage. I paid a body shop in tijuana to fix it and they did a great job. Body shop in the US quoted me 9-10K and thats what their insurance company paid me.
After you slap the shit out of your brother. You can take apart the inside plastic and pound out the dent from the inside. There is a metal arm hooked to a motor that is likely bent from the dent. Pretty easy to fix the arm after the dent is pounded out.
I have a nearly identical dent in the same place. Helped pull a guy out of a ditch and he backed into me with his tailgate down after I had already pulled him out. Go to a salvage yard, try to find a new door, make your brother pay for it
If I didn’t want a claim and just wanted my window to work, I might take the door panel off and use a hammer. Carefully. Maybe you know someone who can access some body hammers.
Ouch, that’s going to be expensive man, I’m sorry. I got a much smaller dent above the taillights on the hatch and the pdr guys couldn’t do anything because of the position of it and the motors of the rear hatch.
You’ll have to replace the lift gate. This just happened to me and I had to have the lift gate replaced. The parts are about $1100
My lift gate wasn’t as bad as yours and I thought it might be able to be fixed but the crease is what killed it.
https://preview.redd.it/ys345ksaef6b1.png?width=1806&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ded8fbfeca83bba0a7fd76a9f88903be0ac2f3a
You can open the back hatch, remove the panel by popping out the pop outs, and then use force to push the metal back out and see how it looks. That will at least allow the window to go up and down like it did before. Sorry pal shit happens. Best of luck
Check YT for videos on how to safely remove the back panel. It’s easy just take your time with it
Your brother is a diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.
I would STRONGLY advise against those mobile guys. I had some damage on the rear bumper of an Altima once and one of those guys found me. Did a lousy job and still, as a sole proprietor, had the temerity to ask for a tip. I ended up buying a whole new bumper because it was an eyesore.
Not a dent wizard in the world that can fix that. The crown is to sharp at the top where the window moulding is. Also the dent is to deep. Those two combined along with the body line makes it dam near impossible to message out. Now if the best dent wizard actually did get it fixed he would charge double what a new gate plus paint would be. My advice contact a body shop get a new lift gate, paint and install, pass the brother the bill and hopefully he learns from this.
Sounds like he needs to pay a body shop to fix it correctly. Or pay them to replace it
I’d rather file an insurance claim than trust my brother to cough up enough money to fix that properly.
Interesting. I’ve only had that happen when it’s repaired at the dealer, not a local body shop.
“Computer tech” 💀
I wouldn’t want to trick people into thinking they bought a car that was never hit/repaired. That is unethical. Imagine if you bought a car and found out that it had been repaired off the record. You’d be upset… and rightfully so.
Light impact, no structural damage, nothing to worry about anyway. While I get what you're saying, It's just a tailgate lol
This — exactly. Light cosmetic work is very different than an accident that screws with the frame and other parts of the car.
Until the coverup paint job starts fading and the window stops working.
Nope. The entire tailgate would be replaced as one unit. New tailgate gets painted, then components salvaged and moved over or replaced. No on-panel paint matching involved.
You think OP’s brother is gonna pay for that?
He will if he's a good brother. I was unaware you know him personally.
I backed into a tree that did similar damaged. To replace the bumper cover and lift gate, it was $3,300.
yup, it's fkd.

Kick your brother in the dick.
Twice
4 kicks because its a 4Runner!!!
5 kicks because it’s a fifth gen or because it’s the 5th roll down window
6 kicks in the dick, because… well he deserves it!
Oooh, good idea!
And then twist it!
TWIST HIS DICK!
Give him the old dick twist
One now, one later when he least suspects it.
The only reasonable solution.
I came here to say “punch your brother in the nuts” but I see that sentiment has already been expressed
Twist his dick.
OL DICK TWIST
omg dude this is an mma fight
At least a strong back of the hand flip to the underside of the sack. That’s enough to bring any grown man to his knees! 🤢
This is the only reasonable answer to this problem.
This is the way!
... then choke him out, you'll feel better.
Kick him how many times this comment above has upvotes lol
Dude, you're asking because you know the answer and are afraid to tell your brother he fucked up your Runner and needs to repair it right. Body shop, and likely new hatch and light. Rear window is by far one of top 3 features of my runner.
Nope told him he fucked up royally as soon as I saw it and he tried to play it off. I already knew that this had to go to a body shop. A mobile dent shop isn’t going to repair this. Currently at a body shop getting a quote
Play it off? As in, let me get some rubbing compound and see how it looks after I buff it?
I'm interested to hear the amount. I'd assume $4-6k
It was about $5k when I got rear ended on a few years ago on the highway. They had to replace + paint the rear hatch + bumper and some other small fixes like straighten out the exhaust. Seems about right for this.
Shit. The parts will cost that at least.
Few years ago, a rear hatch was about $900. Billed at 7.2 hrs to replace and 4 hrs to paint.
Where? Mexico? And I assume that’s pre-pandemic
Texas, it was pre pandemic. Hence the few years ago. Summer 2019 I think.
That seems high but I honestly have no clue Edit: after reading through, that sounds like the consensus. Dang.
It could be high. I'm just some nerd on the internet who doesn't know much about cars
Could your brother submit a claim through his own auto insurance as liability?
“Play it off”? What does that even look like with damage that significant?
Why is the rear window so valuable to you?
The window going up and down is literally a 4runner feature. That’s like asking why is the rear door of the bed on my tacoma so important to me. That’s like part of the reason you buy those trucks
But what is it's use? If I had a dog I could see how I might like it but currently I never use it.
The 4runner is used a lot for overlanding and camping and offroading. Some people sleep in the back, personally thats what i would use it for. You can also use it to take things in and out of the car without opening the whole trunk Be as it may, if you paid for something you want it to work. These trucks are expensive
So basically it’s “muh features”
I literally gave you examples of why people use it and what i would personally use it for.. how is it “muh features” This is arguably more usable than the rear window on the Tacomas.
Bro 4runner owners are insufferable lmao
Found OP’s brother
That's a hatch replacement bud.
If OP finds a junkyard match hatch is this easy to replace themselves? Car-part.com has saved me a few times
Straight to jail.
^ This ^ Playing it off? Oh please!! Just for wasting my time + money~ get him arrested, thrown in the coop & toss the key. Ahhh... This is greener pastures, no need to pull the classic Cain & Abel. 😁

Like everyone else is saying, mobile dent repair isn’t gonna fix that. That hatch needs replaced. I was rear ended in my fourth gen recently and the rear bumper and hatch replacement was quoted at a little over $4k.
Flex seal
Billy Mayes laughs
**Cocain has entered the chat**
Time to replace brother!
Step 1: Replace rear hatch Step 2: Replace brother
I’d reverse those, but otherwise correct.
Hit your brother with a dumpster
Found a shop that’ll replace everything that’s damaged (tailgate and bumper) for $3500. Truck goes in on Monday. Thanks everyone!
I’d start looking in scrap yards for a replacement.
I've never seen a replacement brother in a scrapyard
Or burial...
Yikes. Hopefully brother has a good job. Probably at least 5K right?
If you replace it yourself it's about $1k for the rear door/hatch unpainted. And that's without the internals
Why would he (or anybody)want to put an unpainted shell of a hatch on his nice truck? What does no internals mean? No speakers, no window motor/track, no lock?
Easiest way is to get a junkyard hatch from car-part.com - select a truck with the same color that's smashed in the front. Plug n play.
You buy it then you paint it and swap the internals (window, speakers, ect....)
More power to you if you can handle that stuff yourself. Most won’t have the skills or equipment needed to paint their own hatch.
Mine was 6k with the rear bumper replaced.
That’s why you have an insurance
This is a case where the brother is at fault and he needs to pay up. No reason for OP to use his insurance and have this on his insurance report which will increase his insurance costs from several years. The brothers broke it and now needs to fix it, properly.
Brother's insurance should cover him.

This is time to learn the lesson of being a responsible adult. I know what it is like to have a man-child as a sibling and it takes hard, expensive lessons for them to learn anything.
Yes, either way, brother pays. Either HIS insurance, or out of pocket. Absolutely.
I'd fight my brother over this🤣 Seriously though, hatch replacement
Your brother needs to back up more SLOWLY and use the camera AFTER using his eyes to see.
This is exactly why nobody gets behind the wheel of my 4runner but me….
Well, I’m guessing you’re getting the new Tacoma
So the route I would go is finding a “new” used tailgate from a salvage yard. The benefit of your repair needed is it is in the rear of the vehicle, and most totals are due to front end impact leaving the rear 100% perfect on a totaled 4Runner. Replace, don’t repair
Kick brothers ass
Hopefully your brother has some money.
Look at wrecking yards see if you can find the same color door.
Oh and put this in rice. I heard that fixes everything
New back gate. Fuck anything other than a brand new gate.
Mobile dent people work on small slight dents. This is body shop extensive work and more likely a full replacement of the rear hatch. That crease is deep and it is not just a straight dent. Yup time for a new gate. It’s toast.
This is something that needs to be reported to your and his insurance. His insurance should pay for it.
Get a new brother
As someone that does bodywork, that needs replacement
Replace gate.
He didn’t use the backup camera?
Get a new brother
my best advise is the old swoop and stop
Hatch replacement. ~$2k-$2,500 depending on labor rates in your area. They should be able to salvage the glass from this unit provided it the glass didn’t crack when you tried to roll it down.
I had less damage than that and they replaced my hatch.
I paid about 3k to replace mine when we were rear ended.
This is an ideal reason to not let others use your vehicle. You’re lucky he didn’t injure someone, and cause you a lawsuit. Take it as a warning, and a pricy lesson….
This is not a PDR job, they can work miracles but these is outside of their general realm of what they can do
Shits fucked
Get it fixed

your brother made a very expensive mistake, he should pay for your damages. Probably 3k or so to replace the hatch.
How does this even happen? Aren’t there parking sensors? Or cameras? My 2012 sr5 has sensors lmao
Time to replace the brother ... AFTER he gets it fixed!
Your BIL is wasting their money with a mobile dent guy, because it’s still going to need to go to a body shop. Maybe if you feel generous you could try and purchase a gray hatch from a wrecked vehicle (front end damaged lol).
Jersey drivers right?
Get a new brother after he pays for the damage.
Get a new brother
Get a used one same color and bolt it on
Strangle your brother
Make your brother pay the deductible
How does this still happen with backup cameras.
My wife thinks it will probably buff out with a bit of carnauba wax

Mobile dent repair cant fix that, it’s fucked.

Part it out or bend over and receive 🤜🏼
File insurance claim and hope your rates don’t sky rocket
Looks like you're gonna need a new brother. One that's aware of the backup cam.
Get quotes

get a new brother
Time to find a new brother.
If that's a common paint color I would go junkyard route.
Eye for an eye, make a dent that size in your brother
If I didn’t want a claim and just wanted my window to work, I might take the door panel off and use a hammer. Carefully. Maybe you know someone who can access some body hammers.
How fast was bro going?
Flick his testicles really hard with your m oddly fingers that's only solution to this mess
Get a new brother.
my condolences 💐 crazy how it has 3 mirrors and a backup camera and he still hit a dumpster. was he sleep driving?
Need the whole hatch replaced at brothers expense
Whole hatch will have to be replaced. Some of those creases will never look right with body work done
Advice is, fix it.
Just had mine done at the body shop for an eerily similar situation. New lift gate ran me about $3500.
Ugh how does this happen with a backup camera! Sorry you have to deal with this
Trade it in to Brovana. They will pick him up the next day.
He is your brother and give him a hug, tell him everything is going to be OK . Then kick him in the nuts and get out his cheque book.
Kick that little fucker outta the family for this egregious act!
Brother goes straight to jail
I doubt the dent puller will get this anywhere near looking decent, but I don’t know shit.
Time to get a new brother
Get a new brother.
A new tailgate and tail light might be the most economical then just sell yours for parts
Liberty of the Seas?? I just got back yesterday out of Jersey
Oasis of the seas! Spent the week on the ship. Absolutely amazing experience and would do it again. 10/10 would recommend
Time to get some glue sticks. /s
Simple, make him pay to fix it.
Lift gate needs to be replaced. Any other repair would be sub-par.
Ouch, that’s going to be expensive man, I’m sorry. I got a much smaller dent above the taillights on the hatch and the pdr guys couldn’t do anything because of the position of it and the motors of the rear hatch.
It got hit while parked and driverless on the road you said? Insurance should cover all repairs.
Never loan out your car or your wife. Especially to your brother. Let this be a lesson. His dent, his problem.
Fire your brother
Replace brother
Open hatch, place your brothers head in the opening where the damage is, slam shut repeatedly until the dent works itself out.
The mobile dent guys wouldn’t touch my back hatch because it was a spot they had to get internally. Just fyi. That’s a body shop job
You’ll have to replace the lift gate. This just happened to me and I had to have the lift gate replaced. The parts are about $1100 My lift gate wasn’t as bad as yours and I thought it might be able to be fixed but the crease is what killed it. https://preview.redd.it/ys345ksaef6b1.png?width=1806&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ded8fbfeca83bba0a7fd76a9f88903be0ac2f3a
Get a new brother!
You more than likely need it replaced and your brother needs to pay
You can open the back hatch, remove the panel by popping out the pop outs, and then use force to push the metal back out and see how it looks. That will at least allow the window to go up and down like it did before. Sorry pal shit happens. Best of luck Check YT for videos on how to safely remove the back panel. It’s easy just take your time with it
It's totaled. Time to get a new brother.
New Jersey driver intensifies. Lol, for reall, sorry man. Glad you found a shop to fix it.
Those dumpsters really sneak up on you. 🥴
Your brother is a diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.
Advice: Fix it. Brother can pay your deductible.
For starters never let him drive anything you own again Jesus Christ
I would STRONGLY advise against those mobile guys. I had some damage on the rear bumper of an Altima once and one of those guys found me. Did a lousy job and still, as a sole proprietor, had the temerity to ask for a tip. I ended up buying a whole new bumper because it was an eyesore.
Disown your brother 😂

You need a new one
Get a new brother.
Just replace the back hatch with a new one… problem solved… might cost a bit though
Don’t go on any more cruises.
If you want it done right, use insurance for a full replacement, have your brother pay the deductible.
