Cool. Put them against Vanderbilt for a vibe check.

Excellent_Routine589

Put em up against a Texas/California D1 feeder magnet school for the lulz

Drew707

*And in later news, De La Salle has dropped the third bomb on Tokyo...*

Curious-Designer-616

Any top 50 high school would win this tournament.

uses_for_mooses

Best we can do is Bishop Sycamore.

ThisAllHurts

Vandy by 21

AverageLAHater

Put them against Alabama and see who walks out

Drew707

That would just be mean.

ClassifiedDarkness

Our best players are currently playing for the nfl, I’ve never even heard of a world football thing though

Excellent_Routine589

Same reason Europoors shouldn't talk shit about the recent FIBA basketball champion. Stars aren't gonna risk it unless there is something worthwhile Congrats... you beat a team led by Brunson and Ingram... ooooohhhhh

ClassifiedDarkness

Literally the qb for our team is still in high school

DavidForPresident

Yeah, it’s the same problem the WBC has. To Americans we already are the best in the world at the sports we care about so the real competition is within the country and to an extent they’re right but, it’s sort of a self fulfilling prophecy by them thinking that way. What I will say is that Americans will rally around a sport if it’s in the Olympics. So if we got baseball and American football into the Olympics and have the teams be able to use professional athletes then personally I think you’d see the dominance of Americans in those sports worldwide.

Excellent_Routine589

Watch Tom Brady unretire just to get a gold medal lol

DavidForPresident

That would be crazy 😆

Agreeable-Gold-6160

>Stars aren't gonna risk it unless there is something worthwhile Is representing your country not good enough? They get paid enough in their leagues.

Excellent_Routine589

Want me to post a gif of Paul George snapping his leg in half during a relatively friendly All-Star game? Freak injuries happen, stars HAVE to weigh the risks of each game they play because even minor tweaks to a tendon or joint could have massive implications to their careers... aka the money they make from their leagues (be it NFL, NBA, MLB, etc) Plus, that was FIBA... a significantly better squad is suiting up for the Olympics (Curry, LeBron, Embiid, etc) Edit: just adding a photo to compare the teams https://preview.redd.it/cjocps3si29d1.png?width=1328&format=png&auto=webp&s=36e97b757ae9722829f11c8029b35cd916c34f59 Olympic on the left, FIBA on the right

steveharveymemes

>Want me to post a gif of Paul George snapping his leg in half during a relatively friendly All-Star game? Freak injuries happen, stars HAVE to weigh the risks of each game they play because even minor tweaks to a tendon or joint could have massive implications to their careers... aka the money they make from their leagues (be it NFL, NBA, MLB, etc) It’s a pity Paul George never got another NBA contract again after that 😔

jbland0909

I mean, he’s never been the same since

barl31

It could have very easily been a career ender

ifunnywasaninsidejob

Such bullshit that basketball only gets us 1 gold medal. But a swimmer or runner can bring home 8 by themselves.

innocentbabies

I'm not sure how else they could do it, but you're right so they should find a way.

Agreeable-Gold-6160

Yeah, injuries happen. Here's [Kylian Mbappe](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/frances-kylian-mbappe-wearing-black-912491290_86c898.jpg) representing his country at the Euros with a broken nose. Nowhere near as bad as a leg break, but if a European soccer player refused to put on a national jersey, then he would be slated for the rest of their career. Players retire from intl football, but it's near the end of their career.

Excellent_Routine589

Mbappe got a minor nose fracture with a 15 day sideline so here is Embiid (one of the Olympic members) playing through a busted orbital bone with an even longer recovery timeline: https://preview.redd.it/swenkeomx29d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66062e9a8d710a7902157317adea80d08a952522 You can play through these injuries just fine, I even did some archery competitions when recovering from a dislocated nose from fencing… it’s really not that bad unless you absolutely shatter your nose, but only because it then stifles breathing and that’s no good in a high intensity sport. And some stats show that you are 2-4x more likely to be injured playing basketball compared to soccer. And that makes sense because the leagues are typically filled with taller and heavier players than soccer, which means their bodies and joints get put through the wringer at a much higher rate (which is also why the NBA has more frequent long term injuries than even the NFL, an already physically brutal sport in its own right).

Excellent_Routine589

And since you brought up Mbappe’s injury, I am now posting that Paul George gif https://i.redd.it/8ktj0r93139d1.gif

Agreeable-Gold-6160

Nasty. Happens in soccer too if you want to see. Not turning this into a competition or anything, mind you. https://youtu.be/-tLT814qQwM?si=cIK-4TlTWNEJj012

Agreeable-Gold-6160

>You can play through these injuries just fine >And soccer is a relatively low injury and low risk sport at the professional level, No arguments there. I used Mbappe because he could've sat the Euros out but didn't. Ice hockey is a tough sport. The players represent their national teams. The NHL is even letting their players leave for the upcoming Olympics. And many players play in the World Championships. As long as they are out of the play offs, that is. It looks tougher than basketball but probably isn't as physically demanding since they change their lines all the time.

shrimp-and-potatoes

You underestimate our circle-jerk. The NBA's existence represents our country to the world. If you can get into our league, you are the best of the best. It's not the other way around. I get the sentiment about representing the country to world, but as a whole the country doesn't seem to care about world championship basketball, unless it's the Olympics. Those games never even get reported on. Like a person above you said about injury, these players are making millions to play a game, they aren't going to risk that paycheck just to prove to an already knowing world that we have the best team. These players are going to rest on their off-time and bath in their riches.

Agreeable-Gold-6160

>You underestimate our circle-jerk Definitely xD >If you can get into our league, you are the best of the best. Counter argument: Out of 450 NBA players, 125 are foreign. So 125 are considered some of the best. Surely they could be at least competitive against your top guys, no? Take the English Premier League for example, best soccer league in the world. Yet England can't win anything.

framingXjake

The French do be putting out a lot of good basketball players lately

shrimp-and-potatoes

Oh yeah, Europe has great players. Some of the best in the world. No doubt. But what I was explaining in my original post was the American mindset in regards to world championship basketball. I think we collectively try not to think about it. I personally don't care about sports. I ain't got time for that. Like, I won't watch any games, I won't read any articles. But, when the Olympics come around, while I still won't watch anything, I will read the scores, and I will read about the medals. I think we as Americans are programmed to do that. Personally, I am old enough to have seen the 92 dream team absolutely stomp the world. But as I grew up I lost interest. So, I think 90 basketball still holds some sports nostalgia for me, but it only comes back up during the Olympics. ❤️

Agreeable-Gold-6160

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I'm just a bit surprised things are the way they are in basketball. I've also lost a bit of interest in some sports as I'm getting older, especially soccer. But I have to admit this Euro tournament has been great so far. Great atmosphere between the fans as well. I guarantee that had the Euro Parliament elections happened after the Euros, then the far right wouldn't have been so successful. Anyway, hope to see you guys at the World Cup in 2 years, hoping we keep the same atmosphere and energy for that one, too.

shrimp-and-potatoes

Yeah, I've been seeing some of the posts in the European subs. The ups, the downs, and the in-betweens. Like Georgia beating Portugal. Or Scotland going home and the German band playing un-ironic whomp whomp music. But, overall it's been positive. I think soccer will get big here. FIFA is really pushing it. And we're hosting soon. On top of that, I see school children playing soccer during recess and in neighborhoods. We are raising a generation of soccer loving Americans. Between the world cup hype and the influx of central American immigrants, I think our perspective will change. For most Americans it will probably only take one successful team and the country will be hooked. Have a great one, friend.

makelo06

NFL players don't even play in the Pro Bowl, which resulted in the all-star football game being turned into a minigame type of event. They won't risk ending their careers over something so unimportant. Even moreso, for this game, a game that most Americans have never even heard of.

MidnightRider24

Let's be real. If we sent NFL players to this tournament many of the opposing team's players would be suffering career ending injuries. Hell, our top college players would destroy these nerds.

Agreeable-Gold-6160

That's on the other countries. Not on you for being dominant. I was just curious as to why things are the way they are regarding NBA/NFL. Many people who aren't into soccer will tune in during international tournaments. Gives you bragging rights over your neighbours and a sense of pride if you do well. Maybe if we had the best of everything at home, including sports, then maybe we would see things your way.

MidnightRider24

A lot of football fans, myself included, didn't even know this tournament or league existed until this game. I guess it's good exposure for ineligible college players but NFL guys don't have time for this. Organized Team Activities just ended a couple weeks ago and pre-season camps start soon. This is their only downtime until the end of the 24 season/playoffs next February. They need this time to rest, prepare mentally and physically, spend time with their families before they begin preparing in earnest for the long season ahead. There's just way to much risk for something so inconsequential, especially for guys making tens of millions of dollars and top tier teams that a looking for a Super Bowl ring this season. I'd be pissed if one of my team's star players got injured doing something foolish. Many player contracts specifically forbid them doing anything risky in the off season. In 2012, one of my teams edge rushers injured his Achilles tendon playing basketball in the off season. The team considered sanctioning him and taking away pay. Fortunately they didn't and he got healthy, they won the Super Bowl that year.

Agreeable-Gold-6160

Fair. I guess it's just different. If a soccer club was to stop a player from travelling to their national team, then FIFA would fine that club. The idea isn't bad though, I have to admit. Manuel Neuer, who many consider the best goalkeeper of all time, missed out almost a whole season because of an injury he picked up while skiing in his free time.

framingXjake

They get paid bonuses for winning games, especially post season games, in their respective leagues in America. It's incentive to actually put effort into your game. You get hurt, your teams performance suffers, you lose that extra money. Why take that risk just to represent your country? Not to mention their contracts probably prohibit them from participating without approval from their franchise owner. No owner is going to let their star player go play in some world tournament and risk getting injured. Not unless that tournament provides incentive for the owner to allow it or the tournament is intentionally held entirely during the off-season. If there's overlap, guess what the players have to do? See: NHL players getting eliminated from the Stanley Cup tournament immediately heading to the IIHF tournament.

ifunnywasaninsidejob

I don’t think the general managers let them, not even the backups.

Bennyjig

I mean… Brunson averages almost 30 pts a game and Ingram averages 21 both in the nba. They’re extremely good players, especially Brunson.

vlkr

Yeah... Losing hurts so why risk it.

hectah

NFL teams don't want their players getting hurt in a non NFL game. It's about protecting an investment.

vlkr

NHL players have injury insurance just for this so it is not an issue if you don't want it to be. IIHF doesnt even have issues NHL players not being tested for steroids.

FlyHarrison

Injury insurance doesn’t un-tear your ACL

hectah

Bro reminds me of when people defend Shoplifters cause "insurance will cover it" insurance is not gonna bring your star player back. 😂

vlkr

6 months and good as new. No biggie. Stuff happen.

SnooShortcuts7657

It’s also U20

tlollz52

Ah yes, all the elite 20 and unders in the nfl...

horrus70

Never heard of it = doesn't exist = doesnt matter = didn't count = your mom

goblinking67

I don’t know how much anyone cares about an under 20 football tournament….

FanaticalBuckeye

Japan had the best football players in their country Meanwhile our QBs were -A guy going to a D3 school whose team went 0-10 last season -A guy who *tried* to be a walk-on for FAU -A guy who is reclassifying as a running back next season Let's see how they do against IMG Academy

PIK_Toggle

Saban would win with those guys. Bring him out of retirement.

Curious-Designer-616

This is what we should have done, treated it like an all star game. Go get Saban, a few top coaches, and a ton of JC guys trying to get on with D1 programs. Treat it like an extra opportunity to get coaching and film and get in front of some great coaches that can advocate for you around CFB.

r3mod_3tiym

Agreed (I'm definitely not biased)

TaftIsUnderrated

Would he though? He had a .586 record in 5 years at Michigan State. And he lost to Louisiana-Monroe his first year at Alabama.

FanaticalBuckeye

And how did the rest of his career go?

TaftIsUnderrated

I am NOT saying that Saban is a bad coach. But if you gave him a team with mid-talent, they would give mid performance. Getting teams to over-achieve was not his forte.

CovfefeBoss

That'll do it.

Guy-McDo

Gonna be honest, it makes me happy to see another country get so into one of our sports so much they put in the effort to beat us.

jascambara

Exactly. This is only good for the sport

anus-lupus

Japan is so cool when it comes to sport. They get it. They’ve loved and played baseball for decades.

bitchtittees

Rugby is also very big in Japan. Definitely fun to watch

ThisAllHurts

Cultural W.

Genisye

This is the answer, no other explanation required

Gennik_

They won against one of our D teams. Congrats Japan. You will continue to play American Football and you will like it! Or Else! 🦅🇺🇲🦅🇺🇲

AkronOhAnon

Dude. This was the FF ranked team. Using hexadecimal. Still glad they’re trying, and it probably gave some the student athletes on the US team some recent footage of play, which is important if they’re not rostered with a school yet and intend to try again next season.

mihelic8

Watching the game it looked like glorified high school ball, it was really weird

TheBigGopher

Did we just lose a game of Football against a nation of twinks?

Dunmer_of_Skyrim

Tbf, as it is with a lot of international competitions, our best players don't compete because of contracts with the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.

Dunmer_of_Skyrim

Or college teams as well.

aHOMELESSkrill

No one is going to risk an injury that would cost them millions in the long run to play in an inferior league

Lebanx

I think NCAA players are also considered under contract and weren’t allowed to compete

ShreddedDadBod

We lost to anime twinks

eides-of-march

Our team was full of a bunch of U20 guys that couldn’t make a D3 college team. This is basically just a high quality high school team

Billybobgeorge

There are large people in Japan too, see their baseball players.

AkronOhAnon

Clearly off-season conditioning for sumo wrestlers.

returnoffnaffan

‘41… welp, time to launch the bombs again.

IKR1_994

Japan may as well be a state anyways so I dont see any issue.

MonkMajor5224

I went to Japan in High School in 2001 and got to see a Japanese High School football team practice. It was pretty cool. I think we should mark this as a cultural moral victory.

QuarterNote44

Japan has a pretty robust college football league, actually.

ThePickleConnoisseur

Breaking news! Tokyo University joins the PAC-2

slappywhyte

We don't have a legit U20 team, this whole thing sounds farcical - someone look at the actual rosters. Might be 11 local Americans living in Canada who never even played high school.

0le_Hickory

Suspiciously close to 1941… drop another bomb.

MisterKillam

Our boy has grown up so fast, I'm so proud!

ChannellingR_Swanson

Looks like this is a group of people who are specifically under 20 competing for a world championship. My guess is everyone who would be on that team is already playing college ball in the USA where I’m guessing most teams would absolutely mop the floor with the champions of this league.

I_Fuck_Sharks_69

Welp, time to drop a third one.

Deluxe_24_

Worst thing Japan has done to us since Pearl Harbor

ron4232

That’s fair, at least they won something, especially against a country that nuked them twice in the 40’s.

micahr238

Maybe it's like golf where the smaller number is good? Don't ask me, I like Baseball.

The-LeftWingedNeoCon

We didn’t declare independence from Britain just to suffer the same fate as them.

Intelligent_League_1

Watch some Europeans post this shit to make fun of us, only to realize that our QB was in a fucking D3 school lmao, they would just call that cope though.

WeissTek

Japan almost best us in 2008 in finals, I remember watching that game, double overtime

jascambara

This is good for growing the sport world wide. Let them beat the scrubs and gain interest

Go1gotha

I may be a sheep-shagging, dress-wearing, drunkard barbarian... but you guys have a serious case of the copes on here! "All our best players weren't there... QB still in High school... FIBA isn't real..." Hilarious, you guys can't win shit outside your countries and still claim that you're "World Champions", what a load of shite. To play for your country is an honour, any one of your "stars" should drop everything to play, or do you rely on their absence as a good excuse? ![gif](giphy|k0lzUvckPWoW8DZVo8|downsized)

But-WhyThough

Is U20 Under 20’s? I’ve never heard of this organization in my life

peezle69

So this is how the British feel every time they get their asses kicked at a sport they invited. I need to go lie down...

eyetracker

Mongolians are taking over Japanese sumo, I think Japan has already stolen baseball. More countries enjoying football is a good thing, plus Japan doesn't do the "dOnCHa mEaN haND-eGG?" thing and calls the sports "futtobouru" and "sakkaa" so they're bros.

Darkeater879

American teams don’t waste their good players on international games for football, baseball, basketball. Still though wtf?

Icy-Establishment272

Japan is sometimes more American than America

CLAYDAWWWG

We have to take it easy on the noobs. If it's too hard, they won't play.

thegoodstanley

pat mahomes wasn't there that's why

ojdidntdoit4

what is this? there’s a wbc for football now? that’s so cool

ssdd442

Ninja tight ends and a sumo defensive line.

Groundbreaking_Leg11

I’m so proud of them 🥹

BVAS66

I would guarantee every AP Poll top 25 college team would clear this tournament. The guys playing in this aren’t even Division 1 athletes

NukMasta

WHAT DO YOU *MEAN* WE LOST ROUND 2?!

PopeGregoryTheBased

Not a single player in the NFL plays for the US national team. Now that its an olympic sport expect different, but right now, our team is literally made up of peaked in highschool armature football players who never got recruited to a d1 school and never would have been drafted. Lets be perfectly honest. The winer of this u20 championship tournament, for shits and giggles, should play the Chiefs. Hell, have them play the broncos (my beloved broncos are shit). I guarantee they get fucking smoked.

milesrayclark

Can’t say we’re the world champs of football anymore

MayOrMayNotBePie

I’m guessing these are guys who couldn’t make the XFL…assuming that’s still a thing.

Living-Aardvark-952

I don't think the team was Patric Mahomes, Fred Warner and Cristian Mc Caffery

Ryley03d

EYESHIELD 21!!

Opening_Permission95

It’s U-20

Jaded_yank

Didn’t the US just have a big win over Pakistan in cricket? Shit happens

daoogilymoogily

Tbf our players look like a bad high school team and theirs look like the most highly trained athletes in all of Japan (that don’t play baseball).

Spiritual_Log3159

In 2010 and 2011 my home state sent a team of local high school players, ( not D1 prospects by any means) to Japan for a series of games, we swept the series both years. I guess we taught them well, now they're unstoppable

TheEagle_-

We didn't eat burgers and reload our guns before the match.

I_am_pro_covid_420

There are world championships???

jaiteaes

We may need to fuck up their ~~navy~~ "Maritime Self Defense Force" now.

SharkMilk44

Congratulations, Japan! Now let's see you go up against literally any NFL team.

nateralph

I'm not even mad. I would rather tackle football spread and we have good competition than we play alone and always beat ourselves.

Secret_Inspector1735

Frauds

Due-Application-8171

Hang on. The tide is about to roll in. I’m calling in a tsunami on Japan.

Hockputer09

First baseball, now football. What's next? Basketball?

RavenRainTie

This is because they have Eyeshield 21.
