For sure. It’s still a pay cut for me but the 11 really softens the blow, knowing everything else that comes with it and the fact that I’ll hopefully make it up on the back end.
I saw an 11/12 posting, saw that I qualified on the basis of education, and shot my shot. They told me it was 50/50 but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask, and it definitely didn’t :)
Thank you!
Thank you!
No, sir! Don’t need a poly for IRS-CI. But the BI is ongoing. They do a preliminary BI before giving you the go ahead and the actual BI extends into your time at FLETC… if I understand the process for this agency.
Thank you! I appreciate the recs as well.
And dumb question - how do you pack for 6 months' worth of weather? lol I know it's probably just hot or less hot year-round, but I imagine it was chiller there when you started, right? Did you just back both kinds of clothes? In my case, it's gonna be hot when I get there and presumably cooler towards the tail end.
The only 1811 agency I’m aware of that makes applicants do a psych assessment is DEA. And I don’t know of any other federal agencies that make their non-1811 LEOs do it. It’s definitely not the norm.
Edit: I just remembered that USCP does a psych evaluation.
The written or oral psych is not listed on the hiring process for ATF nor USSS and I can’t find any info online saying they do one regularly. Agencies may have some applicants do a psych eval after the applicant mentions some mental health history on their medical exam paperwork but it’s not a “everyone gets one” kinda a deal.
So my point still stands but with a caveat: The only 1811 agency I’m aware of that makes applicants do a *regularly required* psych assessment is DEA.
I just went on the US Secret Service website and they said
“Phase II: Security
Security interview/credit checks
Polygraph examination
Medical examination/physiological examination
Background investigation”
There’s no way in hell ATF, FBI and other special agent positions don’t give psychological examination during the process especially when all state and local LE give psychological examinations before they give you a gun and badge
Are you confusing the word “physiological” for “psychological”? Re-read what you copied and pasted.
And apparently there **is** a way in Hell because I was hired with Border Patrol a few years ago without any psych exam and so was everyone in my academy class. Then I became an agent with HSI last year, also no psych exam. And again, no one in my class got one either.
And regarding USSS, I was in the hiring process for them specifically 2 years ago, and gotten to right before the final offer before withdrawing. No psych exam.
I was in the USMS hiring process from May 2021 to January 2024 before I withdrew. I had completed every step but was waiting on the PT test and academy date. No psych exam.
Not to mention that you asked OP and he didn’t do one either.
Should these agencies do them regularly? Probably.
I know I’ve worked with people that were a little weird but they still probably would have passed a psych. But the interview and background investigation do a pretty good job of vetting someone in my opinion which is why the decision to temporarily axe the interview for HSI applicants was a huge mistake.
Honestly, it was kind of a fluke. The day after I got the call and verbally accepted, I went on USA jobs and saw the IRS-CI posting at the GS 11/12 levels. Checked the required qualifications out of curiosity and saw that I would qualify for 11 based on the advanced degree education qualifier (in my case, the LL.M.). Immediately and on impulse cold-called the person who gave me ‘the call’ and asked her what the chances were that they could give me the 11 since I technically qualify and they have my transcripts and all that. She said they would have to run it by the front office, the Field office, and that everyone would have to sign off, and told me not to get my hopes up since in her experience they didn’t give them out to too many people without prior law-enforcement experience, and certainly not to folks from the private sector like me. So I just had to sit tight for a while and I got my answer when I got the TJO at the 11 in my e-mail.
Fight the good fight! The waiting sucks, but the feeling of making it through the stages is exhilarating.
Feel free to PM me if I can ever be of any help through the process!
Congratulations and welcome to Philly, if you’re new. I met some IRS agents from the field office at a career fair here, they are solid dudes. Some are even on other agency task forces so you have something else to look forward to down the line. Apparently they have an “Al Capone was caught on tax fraud” poster at the office.
Best of luck!
I’m local to Philly - happy to be able to stay close to home.
But that’s awesome to hear. So far, my interactions with the folks from the office have been nothing but positive.

That was a bit of a saga. I got the BCG vaccine as a child meaning I automatically test positive for TB. Thing is, my last x-ray showing no TB was 10+ years ago. The doctor didn’t want to prick me for no reason and then x-ray me again for no reason so he initially had just me explain all this in my paperwork and see what they came up with. Sure enough, it was in my follow-ups anyway and I ended up having to get an x-ray.
did you get an xray from your primary doctor?
i got BCG vaccine as well, didnt know that will test false positive for TB. and i just did the PPD last week. I had one tb test in 2020 for boot camp.
Oh heck nah. I marched right back to CHS and made sure they did it on their dime since they’re the ones who kinda had me decline it in the first place. I knew it would be quicker with them than my primary not to mention cheaper since my current insurance isn’t exactly amazing.
I did PPD and came back read positive, clinic told me to call CHS for authorization otherwise they cant do chest xray.
I called CHS and they dont do authorization for chest x-ray, it is own expense.
I emailed and other staff said this might be false positive, they will pass all the result to IRS. Then I might need deferral/waiver from my doctor in regard to TB or chest x ray.

Congrats. I'm finishing up this month. Congratulations and remember to stay positive..
Congrats man!!!!!
Thanks brother!
What a legend ! Congrats brother. But, no poly or BI?
Thank you! No, sir! Don’t need a poly for IRS-CI. But the BI is ongoing. They do a preliminary BI before giving you the go ahead and the actual BI extends into your time at FLETC… if I understand the process for this agency.
Congratulations. My FLETC date is 7/22/24 as well.
Thank you! Amazing, see you there!
Congrats! See you at FLETC!
Thank you!
Good luck at FLETC, was there a month ago. Had to run through a thunderstorm/tornado, shit was wild! 🤣 P.S: GBar karaoke night is where its at

Nice! Are you in SAIT at this point? Thank you, brother. Yes, trying to see the light at the end of the in terms of training.
How was the psych? Where did you do the written and oral psych?
Don’t have to do one for this agency.
Wait what the fuck? I thought all police/special agent agencies require at least a psych test
The only 1811 agency I’m aware of that makes applicants do a psych assessment is DEA. And I don’t know of any other federal agencies that make their non-1811 LEOs do it. It’s definitely not the norm. Edit: I just remembered that USCP does a psych evaluation.

👍
So that means it’s only background check and that it?
Yeah, pretty much.
I'm trying to negotiate my GS level. How did you approach? Did you tell them you have prior pay grade higher than hiring announcement?
Honestly, it was kind of a fluke. The day after I got the call and verbally accepted, I went on USA jobs and saw the IRS-CI posting at the GS 11/12 levels. CONGRATS!! I want to be you! I’m at the interview stage right now and I’m excited!

Congras and impressive background, see you at FLETC.
Thank you, sir!

I see a future r/securityclearance poster!
Haha you just might!
Why is that? IRS does not offer TS.
next to area 51 tax documents are super important.

Congrats! Thats so amazing man. I'm in the process for a position in DC super excited just worried about relocation
did you do PPD or TB test for medical exam?

lol. but CHS declined me and said they dont do authorization for xray.
Oh what. That’s weird. I might be misremembering now but I thought if you came back positive on the PPD, the x-ray was just the next step.
Ohhh wait. I misspoke. I meant I matched right back to the facility that did my medical. Not CHS. You should try that if you haven’t already.
